support group to start
Becky Ewing, RN, Certified Diabetes Educator will be facilitating a monthly diabetes support group the third Tuesday of every month from 1:00-3:00 p.m. The first meeting will be held Tuesday, January 19th at Oscar’s Restaurant in Grangeville. 
Ewing received her diabetes education certification in 2003 and is also a certified Medtronics pump trainer. She is a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital and has facilitated a diabetes support group in Kamiah for the past two years. Ewing also volunteers in the summer at Camp Stix, a camp for children with diabetes in Newport, Washington. The topics for the first meeting will include carbohydrate counting, insulin dosage and testing blood sugars. Free glucometers will also be available for anyone needing to update theirs. “I will arrive at noon so anyone who would like some one on one time to ask questions is certainly welcome to visit. I’d be happy to eat lunch with them and informally answer any questions prior to our first meeting,” said Ewing. “I look forward to facilitating the monthly support group. Hopefully, it will help empower people to manage their disease and ensure healthier outcomes.” Presenters for the Kamiah group this past year included pharmaceutical reps; a pharmacist, a physical therapist and a physician. “Once we get started we’ll spend part of the meeting learning from our varied presenters and topics and part of the meeting will be spent empowering each person to manage their disease.” For more information call the Grangeville PT clinic, 983-2241 or the SMH Cottonwood Medical Clinic, 926-3267.
