The Prairie Pirates rolled to a big win at Grangeville Thursday, Jan. 28 as they won by a score of 69-43. The Pirates took a 19-11 lead by the end of the first quarter and expanded that to 35-22 by halftime. The dominated the third quarter 22-7, opening up their lead to 57-29 and then let the subs and JV swing players finish up in the fourth quarter. David Sigler scored 21 points to lead the scoring while Devin Schmidt and Branden Waller added 14 points each. Beau Schlader, Seth Guyer, Conner Rieman and Justin Schmidt scored 4 points each and Kyle Holthaus and Brock Heath scored 2 each. The JV game was even more lopsided as Prairie rolled to a 63-25 win. Pirates win at Deary by 32 The Prairie Pirates got 18 points from Branden Waller as they cruised past the Deary Mustangs 56-24 at Deary Friday, Jan. 29. Prairie jumped out to a 24-9 lead by the end of the first quarter and upped that lead to 40-13 by halftime. It was 54-19 after 3 quarters and the fourth quarter was played with a running clock. David Sigler added 9 points and five assists while Devin Schmidt had 7 points and 6 rebounds. Kyle Holthaus scored 8 points while Conner Rieman and Andrew Gabica scored 6 each and Derek Schaeffer scored 2. Prairie also won the JV game by a nearly identical score of 57-24. Pirates win big at Lapwai The Prairie Pirates closed out a run of 11 straight road games with a 67-33 White Pine League win at Lapwai Saturday, Jan. 30. The game was rescheduled from Jan. 23. The win is the Pirates’ 16th straight. The game was close for the first 5 minutes then Prairie pulled away with a 12-3 run to end the first quarter with a 20-10 lead. David Sigler, Branden Waller and Devin Schmidt each scored 4 points in that run. Prairie was 8 for 16 from the field in the first quarter while Lapwai was just 4 for 17. The second quarter was more of the same as Prairie connected on 8 of 15 shots while Lapwai was 3 for 14. A 16-3 run in the quarter turned a 22-12 lead into a 38-15 lead with 50 seconds left in the half. Prairie led 40-17 at the halftime break. In the third quarter Schmidt scored 8 points and Waller scored 7 as Prairie continued to add on to the lead with a 9-0 run getting them to a 51-18 lead with 3:38 left in the quarter. They led 57-25 entering the fourth period, which was played with a running clock. The JV starters played the entire fourth period while Lapwai also put several of their JV swing players in. Prairie had 3 players score in double figures led by Waller who had 20 points. Schmidt scored 16 and Sigler had 12. Andrew Gabica added 7 points with Beau Schlader and Seth Guyer scoring 5 each and Kyle Holthaus scoring 2. Waller had 11 rebounds, Schmidt had 8 and Gabica had 7 as Prairie held a 41-31 rebounding advantage. Gabica had 3 steals while Sigler, Conner Rieman and Waller had 2 each as Prairie forced 22 turnovers from the Wildcats. Sigler had 4 assists while Rieman and Derek Schaeffer each had 3. Prairie was 26 for 54 from the field, 48%, and 11 for 16 at the line, 69%, while Lapwai was 13 for 53 from the field, 25%, and 4 for 7 at the line, 59%. With the win Prairie is now 17-1 overall and 6-0 in league play. In the JV game Prairie trailed by as many as 9 points in the third quarter but rallied for a 51-39 victory by outscoring Lapwai 19-1 in the fourth quarter. In the first quarter Prairie fell behind 7-11 but ended the first quarter with a 6-0 rally for a 13-11 lead. Ryan Dalgliesh scored a putback then Justin Schmidt scored after a steal by Seth Guyer and Guyer scored a putback on an offensive set resulting from a steal by Brock Heath. In the second quarter Lapwai connected on four 3-pointers while Prairie hit just 3 of 16 from the field. Despite that Prairie still led 22-21 with 3:25 left in the half after a putback by Chris Hoene but that was it for first half scoring as Lapwai finished the half with a 0-8 run for a 22-29 halftime lead. Lapwai led 26-35 with 5:23 left in the third quarter when Prairie started to turn things around. Justin Schmidt scored twice on putbacks to cut the lead to 5. Lapwai then hit a 3-pointer but Beau Schlader scored a putback to make it 32-38 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter Lapwai was 0 for 11 from the field with 6 of those shots coming from 3-point range. Prairie meanwhile was 7 for 12. Tim Frei started the fourth quarter scoring with a putback and Schlader followed with a baseline shot. Guyer then hit 3 straight baskets to first tie then give Prairie the lead. Frei added a free throw to make it 43-38. Lapwai scored their only point of the final period with 1:58 left and Prairie ended the game with an 8-0 run with half those points coming at the line. Guyer had 14 points to lead the JV’s in scoring with Schmidt adding 12. Schlader scored 8, Heath 6, Frei 5, Dalgliesh 4 and Hoene 2. Prairie held a 51-35 rebounding edge with Guyer collecting 21 rebounds. Heath had 5 steals while Guyer had 4 and Schlader 3. Heath had 4 assists and Schlader had 3. Prairie was 21 for 62 from the field, 34%, and 7 for 14 at the line, 50%. Lapwai was 15 for 52 from the field, 29%, and 3 for 6 at the line, 50%.
