Pirates
edge C.V.
The Prairie Pirates came from behind in the fourth quarter to edge the Clearwater Valley Rams 50-49 in a White Pine League game played Thursday, January 6 at Cottonwood. Prairie trailed 12-13 after one quarter, 23-25 at the half and 37-40 after 3 quarters in a game that was close from start to finish. They took a 4 point lead midway through the fourth quarter but C.V.’s Eugene HeavyRunner connected on a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 1 with over three minutes to play at 49-50. Neither team was able to score in the final 3 minutes but C.V. had a chance to take the lead with HeavyRunner at the free throw line for a 1 and 1 with 3 seconds left. He missed the first shot and Seth Guyer rebounded the miss and was fouled. Guyer missed the ensuing 1 and 1 and C.V. got the rebound but their desperation shot at the buzzer missed. Devin Schmidt wound up with 18 points to lead the Pirates in scoring while Beau Schlader added 15 points. Schmidt added 8 rebounds while Schlader added 8 assists and 4 steals. Also scoring for the Pirates were David Johnson with 6 points, Justin Schmidt with 5, Guyer with 4 and Brock Heath with 2. HeavyRunner was the game’s leading scorer with 22 points for the Rams. Prairie also won the JV game 44-25. C.V. 13 12 15 9 -49 Prairie 12 11 14 13 -50 Prairie-Schlader 7, 0-0, 15; Guyer 2, 0-4, 4; J. Schmidt 2, 1-3, 5; Johnson 3, 0-0, 6; D. Pirates win by 12 at Deary The Prairie Pirates took the lead for good midway through the first quarter and held on for a 56-44 win at Deary Friday, January 7 in a White Pine League contest. Devin Schmidt went 4 for 4 from the field in the first quarter and hit the go ahead basket from 17 feet out with 3:10 left in the quarter to put Prairie up 9-8. Schmidt added just 1 point the rest of the game but Beau Schlader took over in the second quarter going 3 for 3 with a pair of three pointers as he scored 13 of his game-high 19 in the first half, helping Prairie take a 31-18 lead at the break. Prairie extended the lead to 36-20 in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Brock Heath and a basket by Schlader. Deary then put together a rally as they scored 8 straight to cut the lead in half. Prairie then rebounded and outscored the Mustangs 7-2 the rest of the quarter. Prairie connected on just 2 of 13 shots in the fourth quarter but were 9 for 10 at the line as they were able to hold off any attempted rally by the Mustangs. It seemed Deary would play their best when they had their 6’8” junior, Nate Rathbun, in the game but apparently he had some stamina problems as he was frequently subbed out of the lineup. Schlader was the only scorer in the game to break double figures with his 19 points which including three 3-pointers in the first half. David Johnson and Devin Schmidt scored 9 points each with Seth Guyer scoring 7, Justin Schmidt 6, Heath 5 and Chris Hoene 1. Deary had 3 different scorers, including Rathbun, score 9 points each. Deary held a 28-34 rebounding edge. Justin Schmidt led the Pirates with 8 rebounds while Schlader added 7. Heath had 3 steals while Schlader, Guyer and Justin Schmidt had 2 each. Schlader also had 7 assists. The Pirates were 18 for 51 from the field, 35%, and 16 for 20 at the line, 80%. Deary was 17 for 42 from the field, 40%, and 6 for 13 at the line, 46%. With their 7th straight win Prairie improves to 7-2 on the season and 3-0 in league play. The JV team played a close game but led most of the way as they won 37-32. Deary lead early at 2-3 but a lay-up by Marcus Higgins put Prairie up 4-3 with 2:56 left in the first quarter and they never trailed again. They led 8-5 at the end of the first quarter with Josh Schlader scoring 4 points. Deary was able to tie the score at 13 and again at 15 in the second quarter but a basket by Tyler Hankerson put the Pirates up for good with 2:14 left in the half. Prairie led 21-17 at the halftime break. In the third quarter Prairie took a 28-21 lead on a driving lay-up by Marcus Higgins but Deary came back to cut the lead to 28-25 by the end of the quarter. Prairie’s biggest lead of the game came with 1:41 left when Higgins hit a 3-pointer. Deary answered with a 3-ponter of their own for the final scoring of the game. Higgins had 20 points to lead all scorers with Schlader scoring 5, Troy Lorentz and Chris Hoene 4 each and Jared Higgins and Hankerson 2 each. Deary held a 26-32 rebounding edge with Lorentz, Schlader and Hoene grabbing 5 each for the Pirates. Jared Higgins had 5 steals 3 assists in the game. Prairie was 16 for 37 from the field, 43%, and 4 for 19 at the line, 21%. Deary was 14 for 37 from the field, 38% and 3 for 7 from the line, 43%.
