Summit
girls win Consolation Trophy
The Summit Academy Lady Patriots earned the consolation trophy at the State 1-A Division 2 Tournament for the second straight year as they lost to eventual champion Dietrich 52-62 then bounced back to beat Tri-Valley 52-34 and Garden Valley 54-39 at Nampa Feb. 17-19. The first “if only” for Summit was all the missed chances in the first quarter. They scored just 3 points in the first 4 minutes of play but in that time must have missed at least 7 or 8 lay-ups. Even with that they trailed only 13-14 at the quarter break. The second “if only” was Rachel Wemhoff getting into foul trouble. She picked up her third foul late in the first half and then picked up her 4th just over 3 minutes into the third quarter. She sat out the final 4:46 of the third and then came back in to start the fourth and lasted only until the 5:58 mark, playing just over 5 of the 16 minutes of the second half. The second quarter of action saw several more missed shots inside as they trailed 19-27 at the half. It might’ve been more but Dietrich wasn’t exactly blistering the nets as they connected on just 5 of 20 second quarter shots. Summit found the shooting touch in the third quarter as they hit 8 of 11 shots. They quickly cut the lead in half on baskets by Rachel Wemhoff and Nicole Frei but then gave up 4 straight points. Savanah Prigge then stole the ball and drove full-court for a lay-up and then added another basket to again cut the lead to 4. After a Dietrich basket Nicole Frei converted a 3-point play and Nicole Wemhoff, in for big sister Rachel, connected from 16 feet to cut the lead to 1 at 34-35 with 1:45 left in the third. Dietrich was able to push the lead back to 7 thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by Charley Bingham as the Blue Devils led 36-43 after 3 quarters. In the fourth quarter Summit cut the lead to 3 points on 4 different occasions, the last time at 46-49 with 3:44 left after a basket by Nicole Frei. From that point on Dietrich was able to convert a couple of lay-ups and then scored their final 9 points at the free throw line while Summit scored just 6 points total. Despite hitting 16 of 23 shots from the field in the second half Summit actually lost ground as Dietrich countered with 13 of 16 from the free throw line including an 8 for 8 performance by Bingham. Chmelik wound up as Summit’s leading scorer with 13 points while Prigge scored 12 and Frei 11. The Wemhoff sisters each scored 6 and Brooke Schumacher scored 4. Summit held a 38-33 rebounding edge with Prigge pulling down 20 rebounds. Frei had 4 steals while Chmelik and Schumacher had 3 each and Prigge had 2. Prigge had 6 assists and Chmelik had 4 while Rachel Wemhoff added 3. Summit was 25 for 55 from the field, 45%, and 2 for 6 at the line, 33%. Rachel Wemhoff scored the first 4 points of the run then Prigge scored the next 6 with Schumacher finishing it off with a steal and drive for a lay-up. Summit boys drilled by Nezperce The Nezperce Indians made sure there were no first-round upsets in the 1-A, Division 2 District Tournament as they smothered Summit 21-74 at the LCSC Activity Center Monday, Feb. 21. Summit went 0 for 9 in the first quarter and trailed 0-20 at the end of the period. David Waters finally put the Patriots on the board with a 3-pointer to open the second quarter scoring. Nezperce scored the first 13 points of the third quarter with their starters back on the floor before Derek Nuxoll scored the Patriots only 2 points of the period. The Indians then reeled off another 10 straight points to take a 10-57 lead into the final period. There being no mercy rule for District games, Nezperce went to their reserves for the entire fourth quarter and Summit was able to more than double their 3 quarter score with 11 points in the final frame. Chmelik wound up leading the Patriots in scoring with 7 points with Nuxoll and Shane Stubbers scoring 4 each. David Waters scored 3, Wemhoff 2 and Michael Waters 1.
