Pirates lose to Kendrick
The offense struggled to move the ball as the Prairie football team lost to Kendrick 6-18 at Cottonwood Friday, Sept. 30.Tim Frei and Josh Roeper gang up on a Kendrick ballcarrier as Justin Schmidt comes in from the right.
Prairie managed just 22 yards of offense in the first half with 16 of that coming on Levi Lustig’s run as time ran out.
Turnovers also plagued the Pirates as they had 3 interceptions and two lost fumbles with the fumbles hurting more than the interceptions as one fumble led to Kendrick’s first touchdown and the second killed off a chance to score and get back in the game.
Prairie got a break early as Kendrick took the opening kickoff but fumbled the ball on their third play with Josh Roeper recovering at the Kendrick 45.
Prairie couldn’t take advantage though and had to punt. Kendrick moved the ball out near midfield before having to punt themselves and their punt rolled dead at the Prairie 1 yard line.
The teams again traded punts with Prairie gaining the advantage this time as Kendrick’s next punt traveled only 13 yards before going out of bounds at the Prairie 36.
Prairie fumbled the ball away on the next play with Kendrick taking over at the Prairie 38.
McCoy Hale sacked Kendrick quarterback Austin Hall on the next play for a 7 yard loss but then came a controversial play.
Kendrick quarterback Austin Hall rolled out left and over the line of scrimmage, saw that route blocked by the Prairie defense, then turned back toward the right, behind the line of scrimmage and spotted a wide open Kole Hardin downfield and threw him a pass for a touchdown. A flag was thrown on the play, apparently for an illegal forward pass, but after discussing it the referees said there was no foul. Apparently in high school the rule says you only have to have both feet behind the line of scrimmage for it to be a legal pass, there’s nothing in the rules that address crossing the line of scrimmage and then returning behind the line. The play probably shouldn’t have counted anyway though as Kendrick had at least one lineman illegally downfield but that was missed by the referees.
Kendrick was able to score again on their next possession to take a 0-12 lead and that’s where the score stood at halftime.
An interception ended Prairie’s first second half possession but the Pirates stopped Kendrick on fourth and inches with Garrett Schmidt and Hale combining to tackle Hall for a loss of a yard.
Prairie then was able to finally get their offense going. They got backed up right away with a holding penalty but a 21 yard gain by Hale on a screen pass to the right side gave them a first down at the Kendrick 48.
Justin Schmidt stiffarms a Kendrick defender on his big punt return that led to Prairie’s only touchdown against Kendrick.Schumacher picked up 10 yards on a sweep and Troy Lorentz 15 on a keeper to the left to set Prairie up with a first and goal at the 7 yard line.
Schmidt was held to just a 1 yard gain then Lorentz had the ball knocked loose with Kendrick recovering the fumble at the 6. That kept Prairie from cutting the lead in half.
The defense stopped the Tigers and forced them to punt out of their own end zone, taking over on the Kendrick 35.
Prairie couldn’t move the ball though and turned it back to Kendrick on downs.
The Tigers moved the ball down to the Prairie 30 but an incomplete pass on 4th down turned the ball back to the Pirates.
Prairie had to punt but the defense then forced Kendrick to punt as well.
Justin Schmidt caught the punt at the Prairie 18 yard line and returned it 42 yards to the Kendrick 40 yard line.
3 plays later Schumacher took the ball over the left side and went 26 yards for a touchdown that cut the Kendrick lead to 6-12 with 4:21 left to play.
The Pirates tried an onside kick but Kendrick recovered at their 45.
Four plays later the Tigers pulled out a trick play as running back Jared Boyle took the ball to the right and then turned and threw across the field to Hall, the quarterback, who caught the ball in stride and took it 45 yards for a touchdown to all but clinch the game with just 2:03 left to play.
Justin Schmidt was able to return the ensuing kickoff 32 yards to the Prairie 40 and 3 runs by Schumacher netted 38 yards but another interception ended that scoring attempt.
Schumacher wound up with 97 yards on 14 carries with Lustig adding 27 yards on 5 carries. Prairie had 136 yards rushing on 35 attempts.
Lorentz was 2 for 10 passing with 3 interceptions for 22 yards. Hale had 1 catch for 21 yards and Schumacher had 1 catch for 1 yard.
Justin Schmidt was all over the field on defense with 18 tackles as he appears to be nearly fully recovered the leg injury that kept him out of the first 3 games.
Hale had 8 tackles and 2 sacks. Tim Frei had 6½ tackles. Lorentz had 6 tackles. Roeper had 3 tackles with a sack and a fumble recovery. Seth Chaffee had 3 tackles while Dakota Wilson had 2½ . Garrett Schmidt had 2 tackles and Torin Dalgliesh, Kade Perrin and Josh Zigler had 1 each.
The loss drops Prairie to 2-3 in league and overall. Their next game is this Friday, Oct. 7, at Lapwai at 7 p.m.
