Pirates
lose by 4 to C.V.
The Prairie Pirates managed to keep it close all the way but in the end it was too much Jake Squires as the Pirates lost 42-46 to Clearwater Valley Friday, Dec. 9 at Cottonwood. C.V. took a 10-14 lead at the end of the first quarter with Squires scoring 10 of his game high 27 points. Justin Schmidt scored 4 for the Pirates with Marcus Higgins, Josh Zigler and Lucas Arnzen adding 2 each. C.V. pushed the lead to 12-20 in the second quarter but Prairie rallied in the final 2 minutes to take the lead. Schmidt started the rally with a putback and then stole the ball and drove for a lay-up. He scored again on a feed from Higgins to cut the lead to 2 with 38 seconds left. As the half wound down Jared Higgins wound up on the left side and made a bad pass. C.V. went to save the ball from going out of bounds and tossed it right back to Jared who put in a 3-pointer to give Prairie a 21-20 lead at the half. A steal by Marcus Higgins led to a putback by Seth Chaffee to open the third quarter scoring but C.V. tied the score with a 3-pointer by Squires. C.V. led 25-28 midway through the quarter but a basket by Schmidt and a long rebound and putback by Arnzen put Prairie back on top 29-28 with 2:50 left. That was to be the Pirates final lead though as C.V. scored 4 straight and led 31-32 at the quarter break. The Rams pushed the lead to 31-37 in the fourth but Prairie was able to cut the lead back to 3 several times. Prairie trailed 38-43 with 1:40 left and had to commit a couple of fouls before they could get C.V. in the bonus. C.V. twice missed the front end of bonus situations but got the rebound the first time. The second time led to a putback by Arnzen with 16 seconds left that cut the lead to 3. The next foul put C.V. in the double bonus and Squires made 1 of 2 to make it a 4-point lead. With 3 seconds left Tyler Hankerson was fouled and made both free throws to cut the lead to 2 when maybe he would’ve been better served missing the second on purpose to give Prairie a chance to tie. C.V.’s Laine Pratt was fouled right away on the inbounds and made both free throws to ice the game. Schmidt wound up with 16 points to lead the Pirates in scoring with Arnzen scoring 8, Marcus Higgins and Chaffee 4 each, Rhett Schlader and Jared Higgins 3 each and Hankerson 2. Prairie had a 36-25 rebounding edge with Marcus Higgins grabbing 10 to lead the team Schmidt had 8 while Arnzen had 7. Marcus Higgins had 2 steals and 5 assist while Zigler had 2 steals and Troy Lorentz had 2 assists. Prairie was 18 for 55 from the field, 33%, and 5 for 8 at the line, 63%. C.V. was 19 for 37 from the field, 51%, from the field and 6 for 10 at the line, 60%. With the loss Prairie drops to 0-2 on the season. Prairie won the JV game 35-25. C.V. led most of the first quarter but Dylon Bruegeman hit a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left to give Prairie a 5-4 lead. C.V. took back the lead in the second quarter at 9-13 but Bryson Higgins, who scored all 6 of Prairie’s second quarter points, hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 11-13 at the half. Prairie took control of the game with a 13-0 run to start the second half. Bruegeman scored 8 of those 13 points with Casey Danly scoring the other 4. Danly added another basket later in the quarter as Prairie led 26-17 heading into the fourth period. C.V. had a 0-8 run in the fourth to trim the lead to 28-25 but Prairie ended the game with a 7-0 run which included a 3-pointer by Jake Rowland. Bruegeman wound up as the leading scorer with 14 points with Danly scoring 8, Bryson Higgins 6, Rowland 3 and Jared Higgins and Tanner Ross 2 each.
