lose to Troy, Genesee
The Prairie Pirates lost twice by lopsided scores this past week. On Thursday, Jan. 12, they lost 22-55 at Troy and on Saturday, Jan. 14, they lost 33-53 to Genesee at Cottonwood. Both were league games. At Troy the Trojans dominated from the start as they led 6-17 after one quarter and 13-37 by halftime. Prairie never was able to score more than 7 points in a quarter and Justin Schmidt was the leading scorer with 8 points. Marcus Higgins and Jared Higgins scored 4 points each while Rhett Schlader scored 3, Lucas Arnzen scored 2 and Tyler Hankerson 1. Hoskins 0, 0-0, 0. 3-pointers-Memmott, B. Malm, Self, Illi. Against Genesee Prairie was within 4 at the end of the first quarter but a 0-11 run to start the second quarter put Genesee in control. Marcus Higgins scored all 6 of Prairie’s first quarter points as he was 2 for 3 from the field while the rest of the team was 0 for 9. Genesee was only 3 for 10 in the quarter but hit 4 of 6 free throws as well to take a 6-10 lead. Genesee heated up in the second quarter, hitting 8 of 14 shots while Prairie was just 2 for 11 as the Bulldogs pulled away to a 14-31 halftime lead. Genesee was missing leading scorer Sam Druffel to a knee injury but Jack Herrmann and Reggie Tilleman filled the scoring void. Genesee pushed their lead to as many as 28 points in the third quarter but Prairie was able to avoid the 30-point deficit which would have led to a running clock in the fourth quarter. Genesee throttled down their defensive intensity in the fourth quarter and Prairie was able to outscore them 9-1 in the final period to cut the final margin to 20 points. Marcus Higgins wound up with 8 points to lead the Pirates in scoring with Schmidt adding 6, Seth Chaffee 5, Schlader 4, Arnzen 3, Hankerson, Casey Danly and Dylon Bruegeman 2 each and Troy Lorentz 1. Genesee dominated the boards 26-44. Schlader had 7 to lead the Pirates with Arnzen adding 6. Schlader and Marcus Higgins each had 1 steals while Chaffee, Lorentz, Jared Higgins and Bruegeman each had 1 assist. Prairie was 11 for 41 from the field, 27%, and 9 for 15 at the line, 60%. Genesee was 19 for 50 from the field, 38%, and 12 for 19 at the line, 63%. With the losses Prairie drops to 1-9 on the season and 0-3 in league play. The JV salvaged Prairie’s only win of the week with a 56-28 win over Genesee. Casey Danly and Tanner Ross each had 7 points in the first quarter as Prairie jumped out to a 22-11 lead with two 9-0 runs in the quarter. A pair of 6-0 runs in the second quarter and 10 points from Lucas Arnzen helped Prairie take a 38-17 halftime lead. Prairie outscored Genesee 11-4 in the third quarter with 5 different players scoring a basket each in the quarter. Jared Higgins had a 3-pointer while Mason Dalgliesh, Ross, Bryson Higgins and Hankerson each had a 2-pointer. The scoring was even at 7 each in the fourth quarter with the running clock kicking in at the 5:53 mark when exchange student Kantapol Kittihakorn scored on a steal to give Prairie a 54-23 lead. Ross wound up with 11 points to lead the JV’s with Arnzen scoring 10. Danly scored 7, Bruegeman and Dakota Wilson 6 each, Hankerson 4, Jared Higgins 3, Dalgliesh, Bryson Higgins, John Mager and Kittihakorn 2 each and Peter Spencer 1. Prairie held a commanding 33-18 edge on the boards led by Danly and Ross with 8 each. Ross and Bryson Higgins had 2 steals each and Bryson Higgins had 4 assists. Prairie was 24 for 45 from the field, 53%, and 7 for 13 at the line, 54%. Genesee was 7 for 33 from the field, 21%, and 12 for 17 at the line, 71%. Shooters score 72 again It was another surprisingly nice January day that made for some pretty good trapshooting weather. Top scores for the week in AA class were Andy Uhlorn, Pepper Harman and Ralph Terhaar, all with 24, A Class top score was Brandon Poxleitner firing a 23, with Andy Harman, Roger Kaschmitter, Jake Rowland and Jesse Bruegeman with 20. High gun in B class was Kyle Bruegeman with a 24. Jean Spencer had the second high score in B class, shooting a 20. C Class had a strong showing, with Ben Havens scoring a 22, followed closely by Kevin Kaschmitter, Jeff North and Jacob Forsmann all with 21. D class top gun for the week was Brad Poxleitner, shooting 22, with JR McAfee close behind with a 21. Short yardage handicap top scores for the week were Shane Poxleitner and Jake Rowland with 23, Brandon Poxleitner with 22, and Gordon Harman, Pepper Harman, Derrick Schaffer, Roger Kaschmitter, and Butch Spencer all shooting 21. Andy Uhlorn led the Long yardage handicap, shooting 19. Finally, Ralph Terhaar had the top Continental score of the week, firing a 23.
