Football signups are Tuesday
The Prairie Pirate football team gets into action this week with a JV game on Thursday, August 30 at Kamiah and a varsity game Friday, August 31 against Salmon River at Riggins. Both games will start at 6 p.m. PDT. Prairie has 31 players turned out at last report. A full roster was not made available to the Chronicle by press time. This year’s team could be a rebuilding squad as several starters from last year’s 5-4 team were lost to graduation. Some talented incoming freshmen could help fill some of those holes. Ryan Hasselstrom returns to the head coaching position after serving as an assistant the last several years. Teel Bruner also returns and will again run the defensive side of the ball. The White Pine League is getting a new look this year as it is splitting into divisions for the first time in football after a couple of years doing it for volleyball and basketball. Deary, Kendrick, Lewis County and Timberline will make up Division II while Kamiah drops down from 2A to join with Prairie, Lapwai, Troy, Genesee, C.V. and Potlatch in Division I. With 3 fewer league games Prairie will actually be able to play some non-league games for the first time since Potlatch dropped down to the 1-A level. They open against Salmon River in a non-league game and will also play Kendrick and Lakeside of Plummer/Worley in non-league games.
