Pirates roll past Kendrick
After scoring just 20 points total in their first two games the Prairie Pirates offense erupted in a 76-34 win at Kendrick Monday, Sept. 17.Garrett Schmidt was wide open for this catch which went for a touchdown.
The game was postponed to Monday due to heavy smoke in the air on Friday. Athletic director Travis Mader was able to get a waiver allowing two varsity games within a week due to the circumstances.
Freshman Jake Bruner got the starting nod at quarterback and led the Pirates to 723 yards of offense, which may be a team record.
Kendrick tried an onside kick to open the game but Casey Danly was able to scoop up the ball and return it 15 yards to the Kendrick 37.
On the first play from scrimmage Bruner just missed on a touchdown pass to previous starting quarterback Marcus Higgins.
3 plays later, on fourth down and 5, Bruner found Garrett Schmidt wide open at about the 15 yard line. Schmidt was able to break a tackle and go into the end zone for a 32 yard touchdown. The 2-point try came up short and Prairie led 6-0.
It took Kendrick only 3 plays to answer back with a 61 yard touchdown play from Tim Olson to Kole Hardin.
The Prairie offense stalled their next two possessions and Kendrick was able to take the lead on Hardin’s second TD catch, 6-12.
It took the Pirates just 2 plays to tie the game as Lucas Arnzen took an option pitch around the left side and went 69 yards for a touchdown.
Kendrick came right back though with Hardin scoring on a 27 yard play to make it 12-18.
After onside and squib kicks, Kendrick finally kicked one deep and Isaiah Shears had to run back and corral the ball inside the 5. He was brought down at the 6.
Prairie broke out from there in a big way 2 plays later. Bruner kept the ball this time on the option and went 77 yards. He would’ve scored if he hadn’t stepped out of bounds at the 17 trying to avoid a tackler.
4 running plays later Arnzen scored his second touchdown from the 3 yard line. Arnzen then added the first 2-point conversion of the game to give Prairie a 20-18 lead.
Hardin went out of the game with an injured ankle and a lot of Kendrick’s offense went with him as the Pirate defense was able to stop the Tigers on their next possession. Kendrick went for it on fourth down from their own 35 and missed on a pass with Prairie taking over.
It took just 1 play to score as Bruner connected this time with Higgins over the middle for a 35 yard play. The 2-point try failed but Prairie led 26-18.
Prairie then ran a tricky onside kick play as the players were all huddled up then burst from the huddle with Jake Rowland squibbing the ball. It hit a Kendrick player and bounced off and Kade Perrin was able to recover the ball at the Kendrick 48.
On the next play Schmidt scored his second touchdown of the game as he burst through the middle and broke into the clear for a 48 yard run. The 2-point try again failed but now Prairie had their biggest lead of the season at 32-18.
Lucas Arnzen, 1, used Garrett Schmidt’s lead block to break loose for big yardage on this play. In the back is Westin Crenshaw, 74.On the ensuing Kendrick possession the Tigers were able to move the ball into Prairie territory but Bruner ended the threat when he intercepted an Olson pass at the 19 and returned it to the Prairie 36.
Three plays later, after a holding penalty brought back a big gain by Arnzen, Bruner again connected with Higgins. Higgins made the catch at about the Kendrick 40 with a defender handing all over him, shrugged off the defender and was able to go the distance for a 60-yard scoring play. Schmidt ran in the 2-pointer to make it 40-18 with 1:57 left in the half.
Kendrick had the ball to start the second half and completed a 49 yard pass to get to the Prairie 17. The defense stiffened and Perrin and Schmidt combined to stuff a fourth down running play for an 8 yard loss with Prairie taking over at the 19.
On second and 10 Prairie ran the option with Bruner making a last minute pitch out to Arnzen who took the ball 81 yards down the sideline for another Prairie touchdown. Hunter McWilliams added the 2-pointer to make it 48-18.
Hardin came back in the game for Kendrick with his ankle taped up and made an impact with a 48 yard catch and run for a touchdown. Kendrick added the 2-pointer to cut the lead to 48-26.
Prairie appeared to answer back as they moved down to the 8 yard line where they had a first and goal but then started moving backwards. A holding penalty and a quarterback sack had them facing third and goal from the 31.
Bruner connected with Seth Chaffee for 17 of those yards but his fourth down pass to Higgins sailed high and Kendrick took over.
3 plays later Olson connected with Jared Boyle for a 79 yard scoring play and with the 2-pointer Kendrick had cut the margin to 48-34 and Prairie fans were remembering the 2007 game where Kendrick erased a 26 point Pirate lead to keep Prairie from making the playoffs.
Kendrick tried a short kickoff again but Perrin caught it and was able to return it to the Kendrick 49.
2 plays later Bruner found Schmidt open down the right side for 38 yards to set up first and goal at the 7.
This time Prairie was able to convert as Bruner scored on a quarterback sneak on fourth down from the 1. The 2-point try failed but Prairie had pushed the lead back to 20 at 54-34.Marcus Higgins came away with the ball and broke free for a long touchdown on this play.
Prairie got the ball right back when Higgins intercepted a pass that was tipped into the air by the receiver.
Prairie needed just 1 play to score again as Bruner again found Schmidt wide open down the right side. Rowland made a block downfield that helped clear the way for a 54 yard scoring play. Bruner passed to Rowland for the 2-pointer to make it 62-34.
Kendrick turned the ball over on downs at their own 37 and the Pirates sent the second team offense into the game.
On 4th and 14 from the 26, Rhett Schlader found Rowland open over the middle for a touchdown. Hunter McWilliams added the 2-pointer to make it 70-34.
Prairie got the ball right back when Rowland intercepted an Olson pass at the Prairie 29.
Prairie was able to add another score as Mason Dalgliesh picked up 22 yards on a pitch to the left and 3 plays later Schlader ran a quarterback keeper up the middle, bursting free for a 41 yard scoring play to make it 76-34.
Arnzen wound up with 185 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns. Schmidt added 85 yards on 11 carries with a touchdown with Bruner picking up 68 yards on 5 carries with a touchdown, Schlader 40 on 2 carries with a touchdown and Dalgliesh 35 yards on 3 carries. Prairie totaled 427 yards on 42 attempts.
Bruner was 8 for 17 passing for 270 yards and 4 touchdowns while Schlader was 1 for 1 for 26 yards and 1 touchdown.
Schmidt caught 3 passes for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns. Higgins caught 2 for 95 yards and 2 touchdowns, Chaffee 3 for 51 and Rowland 1 for 26 and a touchdown.
Kendrick piled up 540 yards of offense with Olson completing 19 of 39 passes for 495 yards. Hardin caught 6 passes for 183 yards, Boyle 6 for 135 and Morgan Kerby 5 for 109. Kendrick had little impact rushing the ball as they picked up just 45 yards on 29 attempts.
With the win Prairie improves to 1-2 on the season and ends 10-game losing streak as head coach for Ryan Hasselstrom.
Prairie’s next game is Homecoming against Lapwai this Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.
