turn out for Summit Girls Basketball
Summit Academy has just 7 girls turned out for girls basketball this year with 3 players returning from last year’s State Runner-up team in 1-A, Division 2. There are no seniors on this year’s squad so it will be a building year with 4 juniors, a sophomore and 2 freshman making up the squad. The team was hit hard by transfers as 3 girls who started most of the time last year transferred to Prairie. Rachael Frei, a junior, is the only returning player to have started last year with fellow junior Sarah Chmelik getting a lot of minutes off the bench. Megan Rehder, another junior, played mostly JV last year as did sophomore Megan Seubert. Abi Chmelik, another junior, transferred back to Summit from Prairie after spending her freshman year at Summit. The two freshmen are Rachel Waters and Joleen Chmelik. Summit also has a new coach as Virgil Frei has stepped up to take the position. He said he as told the girls they’ll probably teach him as much as he teaches them. There were just 4 players at Monday’s practice as Abi and Joleen Chmelik were both sick and Seubert was out of town. Summit will be playing in an expanded Division 2 portion of the White Pine League as Kendrick and Deary have dropped down from Division 1 giving them 6 teams this year. Logos is expected to join the league next year as scheduling was pretty much locked in when they were finally given the okay to compete in the White Pine League. Other Division 2 teams are Nezperce, Highland and Timberline. The league will get 1½ teams to state this year with the District runner-up having to go to McCall for a play-in game against a southern Idaho team. Summit starts play this Friday at 5 p.m. against Timberline in the Highland Tournament. They will play again on Saturday at 10 a.m. if they lose Friday or noon if they win. Highland plays Lakeside of Plummer in the other Friday game. With no JV squad this year for either the boys or the girls there will be a lot of boy/girl doubleheaders on the schedule. Summit players huddle with coach Virgil Frei to go over a play. From left are Megan Rehder, Sarah Chmelik, Rachel Waters and Rachael Frei. Three other players weren’t able to attend Monday’s practice. Coach Virgil Frei acts as a blocker during a shooting drill at Summit's practice Monday. Shooting is Rachel Waters. At left is Sarah Chmelik and in black is Megan Rehder.
