Pirates win big over Highland
The Prairie Lady Pirates had little trouble winning their third straight game as they trounced Highland 69-25 in their home opener Tuesday, Nov. 20 at Cottonwood. Prairie had a 12-0 run in the first quarter that turned a 4-2 lead into a 16-2 lead and they went on to take a 19-3 lead by the end of the first quarter. Runs of 8-1 and 15-0 in the second quarter saw them expand the lead to 42-8 in the second quarter and 44-9 by halftime. Tanna Schlader had 15 points in the first half while Brooke Schumacher added 8 and Keely Schmidt 7. Kayla Schumacher picked up the scoring slack in the third quarter with 8 points although Highland was able to score more than they had in the first half, Prairie still outscored them 16-13 in the quarter. The fourth quarter was played under a running clock (basketball’s mercy rule-the only time the clock stops is when one of the teams calls a timeout) and Prairie’s bench outscored Highland 9-3 for the final margin. Schlader wound up with 17 points to lead all scorers with Kayla Schumacher scoring 14, Brooke Schumacher 10, Schmidt 9, Kendall Schumacher 8, Tyler Workman 3 and Callie Mader, Taylor Heitman, Shelby VonBargen and Nicole Wemhoff 2 each. Rebounding was close at 36-33 thanks to Highland’s Libby Dietz who had 22 rebounds. Schlader had 12 to lead the Pirates with Kendall Schumacher adding 7 rebounds. Defensively Prairie forced 38 turnovers, 23 of by way of steals. Prairie had just 9 turnovers. Mader had 7 steals with Schlader adding 5 and Kayla Schumacher 4. Wemhoff had 7 assists while Mader had 5. Prairie connected on 29 of 64 shots from the field, 45%, and 11 of 17 free throws, 65%. Highland was 9 for 31 from the field, 29%, and 6 for 16 from the line, 38%. With the win Prairie improves to 3-0 on the season. The Prairie JV team finally got to play a full 4 quarters and overwhelmed the Huskies 69-5, holding them scoreless until the final 10 seconds of the third quarter. Prairie led 27-0 after one quarter of play with Leah Holthaus scoring 7 and Sky Wilson and Krystin Uhlenkott 6 each. Hailey Danly scored 8 points in the second quarter as Prairie made it 39-0 at the half. Four different players scored 4 each in the third quarter as Prairie made it 61 straight points before Highland’s Ashley Hendren broke through with a basket to end the third quarter scoring. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock and Prairie outscored Highland 8-3. Danly wound up with 16 points to lead the JV’s in scoring with Uhlenkott scoring 12, Holthaus 11 and Wilson 10. Alli Hoene, Shaney Perrin and Whitney Sonnen scored 4 each and Beka Bruner, Talyss Lustig, Sarah Seubert and Hannah Ross each scored 2. Prairie dominated the boards as well by a count of 40-20. Bruner and Uhlenkott each had 5 rebounds to lead Prairie with Holthaus, Shayla VonBargen, Lustig and Seubert adding 4 each. Defensively Prairie had 37 steals with Highland committing 44 total turnovers. Uhlenkott had 8 steals while Bruner had 6, VonBargen 5 and Daun Hoene and Ross 4 each. Prairie was 34 for 73 from the field, 47%, and 0 for 2 at the line. Highland was 2 for 21 from the field, 10%, and 0 for 2 at the line.
