Pirates 1-1 on week
The Prairie Lady Pirates split a pair of games against teams nicknamed Bulldogs this past week. On Thursday, Jan. 18 they lost to Grangeville in overtime on Senior Night 59-64. On Saturday, Jan. 20 they bounced back to beat Genesee in a league game 43-27. With just 1 league game to play Prairie is locked into the third seed regardless of what happened against Kamiah on Tuesday. They will open District Tournament play against the #6 seed, which at this point appears to be Genesee, on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 8 p.m. at the LCSC Activity Center. Grangeville took a 12-17 lead at the end of the first quarter but Prairie came back to tie it at halftime at 24-24. Prairie took the lead after three quarters at 41-35 only to see Grangeville come back in the fourth to take a 51-53 lead late in the game. Brooke Schumacher tied the game with a putback at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. In the extra frame Grangeville scored first and led the rest of the way. Callie Mader had 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to lead Prairie in scoring but fouled out late in the game. Kayla Schumacher scored 9 while Tanna Schlader, Brooke Schumacher and Keely Schmidt scored 8 points each. Kendall Schumacher scored 5, Nicole Wemhoff 4 and Shelby VonBargen 2. Prairie didn’t shoot very well in the game and were just 11 for 32 at the free throw line. If they make any one of those that was missed during regulation they would have won the game. The Prairie JV team won their contest but no score was available. Genesee cut the lead to 3 but Prairie ended the quarter with a pair of free throws by Schlader. Genesee closed to within 13-11 in the second quarter but a 7-0 run put Prairie back in control. Taylor Heitman came off the bench to score 3 points in that run. Prairie led 20-12 at the half. A 9-0 run in the third quarter opened up the lead to 29-13 with Schlader scoring 4 of those points. Prairie led 36-23 after 3 quarters. Prairie scored the first 6 points of the fourth quarter and then eased off as Genesee outscored them 1-4 the rest of the way. Schlader had 14 points to lead the scoring with 10 of those coming in the second half. Kayla Schumacher added 10 points while Brooke Schumacher scored 6. Schmidt and Heitman scored 4 each while Kendall Schumacher scored 3 and mader scored 2. Prairie dominated the boards 52-38 with Schlader, Kayla Schumacher and Heitman each grabbing 9. Kayla Schumacher had 4 steals while Schlader had 3. Mader had 4 assists. Prairie was 16 for 61 from the field, 26%, and 11 for 24 at the line, 46%. Genesee was 10 for 45 from the field, 22%, and 6 for 18 at the line, 33%. With the split Prairie is now 15-4 overall and 8-3 in league play. In a 2-quarter JV game Prairie won 29-14 over a Genesee team missing several plays to illness. Genesee had only 5 players suited up for the JV game and had just 4 varsity only players. Genesee scored first but Prairie the ran off 11 straight points, 7 by Sky Wilson. After a Genesee basket made it 11-4, Beka Bruner scored 6 straight points to make it 17-4. Prairie led 19-6 at the quarter break. A basket by Krystin Uhlenkott and a 3-pointer by Leah Holthaus to open the second quarter put Prairie up 24-6. Genesee outscored them 5-8 the rest of the way but Prairie still won big. Wilson scored 7 to lead the JVs while Bruner scored 6, Holthaus and Sarah Seubert 5 each, Uhlenkott 4 and Hailey Danly 2. Prairie had a 17-14 rebounding edge led by Wilson with 5. Wilson also had 5 steals and Uhlenkott had 2 assists. Prairie was 12 for 25 from the field, 48%, and 3 for 4 at the line, 75%.
