boys defeat Highland
The Summit Patriots wound up playing just 1 game this week and defeated Highland in a league game 62-34 at Cottonwood Tuesday, January 15. They were supposed to play Friday, Jan. 18, but that game was postponed to Monday, January 28 due to illness. Summit suited up just 6 players for the game as Michael Waters was unable to be at the game but the Patriots still had enough firepower to win easily over Highland. Shane Stubbers and Matthew Schwartz scored 8 points each in the first quarter to stake Summit to an 18-11 lead by the end of the period. Summit outscored the Huskies 12-7 in the second quarter to push the lead to 30-18 by halftime as Josh Lustig scored 5 points in that quarter and Nathan Beckman connected on a 3-pointer. The third quarter was closely contested as Summit outscored Highland 16-14 with Shane Stubbers adding 6 points. Summit blitzed Highland in the final quarter though outscoring them 16-2 as Lustig added 8 points and Schwartz 4. Lustig and Shane Stubbers scored 19 points each to lead the Patriots while Schwartz scored 16. Beckman added 4 points while Dean Stubbers and Thomas Schwartz scored 2 each. Highland was led by freshman Terran Peery who had 18 points. Summit held a 57-43 rebounding edge as Lustig, Shane Stubbers and Matthew Schwartz each had a double-double. Lustig had 19 rebounds, Stubbers 16 and Schwartz 12. Shane Stubbers also had 4 steals while Lustig and Matthew Schwartz had 3 each. Lustig also had 6 assists. Summit was 22 for 60 from the field, 37%, and 18 for 28 at the line, 64%. Highland was 13 for 63 from the field, 21%, and 6 for 15 at the line, 40%. Summit girls lose three games The Summit Lady Patriots have struggled to find a win lately as they lost three league games this past week. They started with a 33-42 loss to Highland Tuesday, Jan. 15 at Cottonwood, lost 31-52 to Kendrick on Saturday, Jan. 19 at Cottonwood and lost 26-27 at Nezperce Monday, Jan. 21in a game that was postponed from Thursday, Jan. 17 due to illness. Summit was already shorthanded as the game started as Rachel Waters was unable to be at the game. It was close for 3 quarters but the mounting foul troubles helped Highland pull away at the end. Summit led 6-2 in the first quarter only to have Highland come back and tie it 6-6 at the quarter break. In the second quarter Summit took leads of 10-6 and 14-9 only to have Highland finish the half with a 0-7 run to take a 14-16 lead. Summit never led in the third although they trailed just 19-20 with 4:46 left and 23-25 after a putback by Megan Seubert with 13 seconds left. Highland scored just before the buzzer to take a 23-27 lead into the fourth quarter. By then Sarah Chmelik had already fouled out and Abi Chmelik, Megan Rehder and Seubert followed in the fourth leaving Rachael Frei, Jolene Chmelik and Becca Phillips as the only available players for the final 15 seconds. They went down to 4 with 1:48 left when Abi Chmelik fouled out. Due to all the fouls called on Summit, Highland was able to win the game at the free throw line as they attempt 38 free throws, making 18, while Summit was just 7 for 19 at the line. Frei wound up as Summit’s leading scorer with 9 points with Seubert scoring 8. Sarah Chmelik and Rehder scored 5 each with Jolene Chmelik scoring 4 and Abi Chmelik 2. Highland, despite a size advantage, held just a 50-55 edge on the boards. Seubert had 16 for the Patriots while Rehder had 12. Abi Chmelik had 4 steals while Rehder and Jolene Chmelik had 3 each. Summit was 13 for 54 from the field, 24%, and 7 for 19 at the line, 37%. Highland was 12 for 58 from the field, 21%, and 18 for 38 at the line, 47%. Kendrick though outscored the Patriots 9-16 in the third quarter and 10-22 in the fourth to pull away for a big win. Frei topped the scoring list for Summit with 12 points with Sarah Chmelik scoring 6, Rehder and Jolene Chmelik 4 each , Seubert 3 and Waters 2. After the foul-fest Tuesday, Summit was whistled for just 8 fouls total this time around. Summit 5 8 9 10 -31 Kendrick 8 6 16 22 -52 Summit-Frei 5, 2-2, 12; S. Summit led for most of the first 3 quarters but they suddenly went ice-cold in the fourth quarter and Nezperce was able to come from behind. Nezperce led early on at 0-2 and 3-4 but a putback by Abi Chmelik put Summit ahead with 3:45 left in the first quarter and Rehder and Seubert each added baskets to give the Patriots a 9-4 lead at the end of the quarter. A basket by Waters put Summit up 13-6 with 1:37 left in the half and broke a near 4 minute scoring drought by both teams. Nezperce then rallied with 4 points in the final minute of the half to cut the lead to 13-10. The Indians opened the second half with a basket to pull within 1 and then took the lead at the 3:35 mark 15-16. That lead didn’t even last 10 seconds though as Sarah Chmelik quickly scored for Summit and Abi Chmelik added a free throw to make it 18-16. Nezperce tied it at 18 but a basket by Jolene Chmelik on one of those plays that just seem to happen for Summit at Nezperce put Summit back into the lead. The ball was being batted around and Rehder reached for the ball and wound up knocking it right to Jolene who was standing to the left of the hoop and made an easy lay-up. Sarah Chmelik added another driving lay-up to close out the quarter with Summit up 22-18. Summit wouldn’t score again until the 1:15 mark of the fourth quarter as they struggled to get the ball past Nezperce’s full-court press and when they did the shots wouldn’t fall. Nezperce meanwhile scored 8 straight points to take a 22-26 lead. Summit finally broke the drought when Seubert scored to cut the lead in half. She then had a chance to tie it at the free throw line but made only the second shot to cut the lead to 25-26 with 17 seconds left. Summit then fouled Kamas Carpenter in an attempt to get the ball back and Carpenter made only the first of 2 free throws. With 5.5 seconds remaining Abi Chmelik got fouled and swished the first free throw but missed the second and Nezperce rebounded. There was some drama packed into those final seconds but Nezperce was able to hold on for the win. Seubert wound up with 7 points to lead Summit in scoring. Abi Chmelik scored 6, Sarah Chmelik 5, Rehder 4 and Waters and Jolene Chmelik 2 each. Summit had a 40-28 rebounding advantage led by Sarah Chmelik with 16 while Rehder had 11. Sarah Chmelik had 5 steals while Abi Chmelik had 4. Summit was 10 for 39 from the field, 26%, and 6 for 13 at the line, 46%. Nezperce was 10 for 40 from the field, 25%, and 7 for 12 at the line, 58%. With the 3 losses Summit drops to 1-8 in league play and 6-11 overall. Their game at Timberline Tuesday would determine whether they are the 5th or 6th seed into District. If they won they will play 4th seeded Highland at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29. If they lost they will play the #3 seed, likely Deary, at 7:30 p.m. that night.
