Vs. Lapwai
It looked like Prairie might be headed for a 2-game losing streak as they fell behind 1-10 at Lapwai and trailed by 6 at the half but rallied big in the third quarter and then held on to win.Lucas Arnzen looks to pass in the Lapwai game. At right is Seth Chaffee.
After falling behind by 9 early, Prairie rallied back to cut the deficit to 17-21 by the end of the first quarter as Bruner scored 7 points and Marcus Higgins and Rhett Schlader scored 3 each.
In the second quarter Prairie was able to get within 1 at 22-23 and 24-25 but could never get over the hump into the lead.
Lapwai converted 7 of 8 free throws in the quarter and were able to take a 33-39 lead at the half.
After playing man-to-man in the first half, Prairie went to zone defense in the second half and it seemed to turn the trick defensively as they limited Lapwai to just 7 shot attempts in the third quarter.
Offensively Bruner hit a 3-pointer and then followed with a lay-up to give Prairie their first tie at 41.
Prairie finally gained their first lead of the game when Arnzen converted a 3-point play at the 2:52 mark.
Lapwai came back to retake the lead with a pair of free throws but a 3-pointer from Schlader and a lay-up by Bruner gave Prairie a 51-47 lead at the end of the quarter.
Prairie built the lead to 58-51 with 3:03 left to play. Lapwai came right back with a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 4.
Prairie then went to running their offense looking for either a lay-up or foul but mostly looking to run clock.  They got it down to 1:00 left when Lapwai fouled. Prairie missed the front end of a 1 and 1 and Lapwai rebounded and quickly converted another 3-pointer to cut the lead to 1.
Prairie again missed the front end of a 1 and 1 and Lapwai rebounded with about 20 seconds to play. They ran the clock down to about 8 seconds and then called timeout to set up a do or die shot. They wound up attempting a contested 3-pointer and Bruner rebounded the miss as time ran out.
Bruner scored 21 points to lead the Pirates in scoring with Schlader and Arnzen scoring 10 each. Marcus Higgins scored 7, Chaffee and Hankerson 4 each and Jared Higgins scored 2.
Lapwai held a slim 29-30 rebounding edge. Bruner had 11 to lead Prairie while Arnzen picked up 9 rebounds.
Bruner also had 4 steal while Schlader had 3 and Marcus Higgins had 7 assists.
Prairie was 23 for 49 from the field, 47%, 7 for 10 in the pivotal third quarter. They were just 8 for 21 from the line, 38% which made the game a lot closer than it should have been. Lapwai was 20 for 45 from the field, 44%, but just 7 for 17 in the second half against Prairie’s zone. They were 11 for 12 at the line, 92%.
In the JV game Prairie lost to Lapwai for the third time this season, 49-56.
Prairie jumped out to a 9-0 lead as Isaiah Shears scored 6 points but Lapwai came back to cut the lead to 9-7 by the end of the quarter.
Prairie maintained the lead throughout the second quarter thanks to 7 more points from Shears plus 4 from Tanner Ross and a 3-pointer from Bryson Higgins. They led 23-19 going into the final seconds but Lapwai tossed in a 30-footer at the buzzer to cut the lead to 23-22.
The lead changed hands a couple times in the third quarter but Lapwai put together a 0-9 run that gave them the lead for good.
They led 32-43 at the end of the third quarter and Prairie could get no closer than 7 in the final frame.
Shears wound up with 21 points to lead the JV’s in scoring with Higgins scoring 10. Ross scored 7 while Calvin Hinkelman scored 5, Mason Dalgliesh scored 4 and Jared Higgins scored 2.
Prairie had a 24-15 rebounding edge at halftime but Lapwai took over in the second half and wound up with a 36-38 edge. Shears and Ross had 11 rebounds each for Prairie while Hinkelman added 8.
Shears had 4 steals and Dalgliesh had 3 while Jared Higgins had 3 assists.

Vs. C.V.
Marcus Higgins gets into the lane for a jump shot against C.V. At bottom right is Tyler Hankerson. It was a much different outcome than the last time Prairie played C.V. as the Rams shredded Prairie’s inside defense for lay-ups while the Pirates settled too often for perimeter shots that weren’t falling.
C.V. jumped out to leads of 2-8 and 6-12 in the first quarter but a pair of baskets by Bruner and a 3-pointer by Schlader gave Prairie their first lead at 13-12.
C.V. ended the quarter on top 17-18 and it seemed like every time you looked at the score from then on, Prairie was trailing by 1 point.
Prairie managed to grab the lead several times though in the second quarter with their biggest lead coming at 26-23 after a steal by Schlader led to a basket by Chaffee.
Prairie still led at 30-28 with 1:42 left after a putback by Arnzen but C.V. ended the half with 3 free throws to take a 30-31 lead at the break.
Prairie never managed to lead in the third quarter as the best they could do was tie the score at 33, 37 and 39. They had a chance to tie the score at the end of the quarter but Bruner could make just 1 of 2 free throws as C.V. took a 40-41 lead into the final period.
Prairie was able to take the lead one last time in the fourth quarter as Schlader scored a lay-up with 1:53 left to put Prairie up 48-47.
C.V. answered right back with a lay-up of their own to retake the lead and then added 2 free throws with 57 seconds left to make it a 3-point lead.
At that point Prairie seemed content to play for a last shot 3-pointer that would put the game into overtime as they worked the clock down until Bruner put up a contested 3-point shot at the 5 second mark that missed with C.V. rebounding.
Prairie quickly fouled and C.V.’s Stormy Wyman missed the front end of a 1 and 1 and Prairie rebounded and called timeout with 3 seconds left.
Needing a desperation 3-pointer to tie it, Prairie’s long inbounds pass was stolen and the clock ran out.
Arnzen led the team in scoring with 16 points while Bruner scored 9. Schlader had 8, Chaffee 6, Marcus Higgins 5 and Hankerson 4.
Prairie had a 39-34 rebounding edge led by Bruner who had 15 with Arnzen adding 9.
Bruner and Arnzen each had 2 steals and Bruner and Marcus Higgins each had 4 assists.
Prairie was 22 for 65 from the field, 34%, and 1 for 5 at the line, 20%. C.V. was 19 for 41 from the field, 46%, and 11 for 16 at the line, 69%.
With their 1-2 record on the week Prairie drops to 11-6 on the season and 7-4 in league play with 1 league game remaining.
In the JV game an 11-0 run in the first quarter put Prairie up 22-7 and they went on to win 61-47.
Ross scored 8 points in the first quarter while Bryson Higgins scored 6 and Hinkelman and Shears 5 each as Prairie led 24-15 at the end of the first period.
Prairie opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run as Jared Higgins scored half of those points. The pace then slowed offensively as they led 37-26 at the half.
A 10-3 run in the third quarter helped Prairie take a 52-34 lead into the fourth.
C.V. was able to cut the lead down to 13 in the fourth but 5 straight points by Hinkelman pushed the lead back to 18 and Prairie cruised to the win.
Bryson Higgins led the JV’s in scoring with 14 points with Ross scoring 12, Hinkelman 10, Shears 9, Jared Higgins 8, Dylon Bruegeman 4 and Devin Bruegeman and Appy Enriquez 2 each.
