Summit boys lose to Lapwai
The Summit boys team was the first to get back into action after the Christmas break as they lost to Lapwai 48-55 at Craigmont Monday, Jan. 6.Matthew Schwartz scores a lay-up for Summit against Lapwai.
The Patriots were able to hang with the Wildcats for most of the first three quarters but Lapwai’s pressure defense finally got to them.
Neither team shot very well in the opening quarter of the game as Summit hit 3 of 14 shots while Lapwai was 4 for 17. Matt Schwartz hit a 3-pointer late in the quarter that tied the score at 9-9 but Lapwai added a pair of free throws to take a 9-11 lead into the second quarter.
Scoring went back and forth in the second until Summit took their first lead of the game at 22-21 on a 3-pointer by Nathan Beckman with 1:45 left in the half.
Lapwai tied it at 23 but Michael Waters was fouled on a drive to the hoop as the half ended and sank the second of 2 free throws to give Summit a 24-23 halftime lead.
In the third quarter Summit broke a 28-28 tie with a 7-0 that gave them their biggest lead of the game. Beckman scored a putback, Schwartz hit a shot and Waters converted a 3-point play to make it 35-28.
Unfortunately that was the high point of the game as Lapwai stormed back with a 2-19 run. They scored 12 straight points before Waters hit a driving lay-up that made it 37-40. A Lapwai free throw made it 37-41 after 3 quarters. Lapwai then scored the first 6 points of the fourth quarter to take a 10 points lead.
