improve to 8-0
The Prairie Pirates picked up where they left off before Christmas as they added 3 more wins this past week to stay unbeaten. On Tuesday, Jan. 7 they won at Kamiah in a league game 75-28. In a pair of non-league games later in the week they won at Grangeville 54-48 and then clobbered Nezperce in their first home game of the new year, 60-19. Rhett Schlader had an unusual double-double with 16 points and 16 steals. He benefited from Jake Bruner and Lucas Arnzen playing at the point of the press with their longs arms forcing bad passes that Schlader was able to pick off. 
Prairie jumped out to a 13-2 lead with Schlader scoring 7 and led 21-8 at the quarter break. Kamiah got within 11 at 23-12 then Prairie finished the half with a 24-4 run. Bruner, in his first action of the season after a collarbone injury in the final football game, scored 4 of his 8 points in that run while Schlader connected on his second 3-pointer. Isaiah Shears finished off the first half scoring with a 3-pointer from the corner as the buzzer sounded. Prairie outscored Kamiah 19-9 in the third quarter with Arnzen scoring 6 and then played the fourth quarter with a running clock. In addition to Schlader’s 16, Arnzen scored 14, Jared Higgins 10, Tanner Ross 9, Bruner and Tyler Hankerson 8 each, Shears 5, Bryson Higgins 4 and Dylon Bruegeman 1. Of note: Bryson Higgins’ 4 points came on a rare 4-point play as he was fouled on a made 3-pointer. Prairie had a 28-26 edge on the boards with Arnzen pulling down 8 to lead the team. Schlader almost had a triple-double as he had 8 assists while Jared Higgins had 4. Hankerson added 4 steals. Prairie was 32 for 65 from the field, 49%, and 9 for 13 at the line, 69%. Kamiah was 11 for 27 from the field, 41%, and 6 for 15 at the line, 40%. The JV game was a game of runs with Prairie putting together bigger runs than Kamiah to come out with a 51-30 win. Prairie jumped out to a 13-0 lead as John Mager scored 8 points and led 16-4 at the end of the quarter. After a putback by Ryan Glimp made it 18-4 early in the second quarter, Kamiah put together their first run to cut the lead to 3 at 18-15. Prairie answered with a 9-0 run and led 30-17 at the half. Prairie scored the first 14 points of the second half in what turned out to be a 26-2 run to take a 44-17 lead. They led 48-19 at the end of the third quarter and made it 49-19 early in the fourth. Kamiah then put together their second run of the game as they scored the next 9 straight points but that only cut the lead to 21 points. Mager wound up with 13 points to lead the JV in scoring with Calvin Hinkelman scoring 12. Terran Peery scored 7. Isaiah Shears and Daniel Mager 4 each, Tyson Schlader 3 and Devin Bruegeman, Brandon Anderson, Glimp and Lucas Wemhoff 2 each. Prairie had a 36-22 edge on the boards with John Mager grabbing 6 to lead the Pirates. Peery had 4 steals while Wemhoff had 3. Bruegeman had 3 assists while Mason Dalgliesh and Brandon Higgins had 2 each. Prairie was 20 for 54 from the field, 37%, and 8 for 18 at the line, 44%. Grangeville came back to cut the lead to 3 twice but a basket each by Bruner and Schlader gave Prairie a 16-9 lead at the quarter break. Grangeville scored the first 5 points of the second quarter to pull within 2 at 16-14 but a 3-pointer by Bruner and then a basket each by Bruner and Jared Higgins, both as the result of turnovers, pushed the lead back to 23-14. Grangeville got back within 5 at 25-20 but Jared Higgins and Hankerson each hit a 3-pointer late in the half to help stake Prairie to a 31-22 halftime lead despite going 0 for 7 at the free throw line. Grangeville started the third quarter with a 4-12 run that cut the lead to 35-34 with 5:38 left in the quarter but Jared Higgins hit his second 3-pointer of the game to keep Prairie on top. Grangeville again cut the lead to 1 at 40-39 after consecutive drives to the hoop for lay-ups by Michael Wilson. Arnzen finished the quarter scoring by making 1 of 2 free throws to make it 41-39. Two baskets by Bruner and a basket by Arnzen gave Prairie a 47-39 lead as Prairie held Grangeville scoreless through the first 4 minutes of the fourth quarter. From that point on Grangeville got no closer than 6 points. Bruner wound up with 17 points to lead the scoring with Arnzen adding 15. Jared Higgins scored 8 with Schlader scoring 7, Hankerson 4, Ross 2 and Bruegeman 1. Grangeville held a 33-36 rebounding edge. Arnzen led Prairie with 10 rebounds while Bruner and Jared Higgins had 7 each. Schlader and Jared Higgins had 3 steals each while Schlader had 5 assists. Bruner and Jared Higgins each added 3 assists. Prairie was 23 for 47 from the field, 49%, and 4 for 16 at the line, 25%. Grangeville was 19 for 46 from the field, 41%, and 5 for 19 at the line, 26%. Grangeville won the JV game 53-63. Prairie led 15-13 at the end of the first quarter thanks to a 6-0 run that finished the quarter. John Mager’s bank shot at the buzzer gave Prairie their first lead of the game. It didn’t last long though as Grangeville scored the first 5 points of the second quarter. Prairie managed to take the lead 1 more time on Daniel Mager’s basket with 3:16 left in the half that made it 23-22. Grangeville responded with a 0-9 run and led 27-33 at the half. Shears got hot in the third quarter with 3 straight 3 pointers that kept Prairie within 5 points but they couldn’t get any closer. John Mager wound up as the leading scorer with 14 points with Shears scoring 13. Peery scored 12 with Hinkelman and Higgins scoring 3 each and Dalgliesh, Daniel Mager, Bruegeman and Anderson 2 each. Grangeville had a 38-43 rebounding advantage. John Mager had 15 to lead the Pirates. Hinkelman had 2 steals and Peery, Hinkelman, Higgins and Bruegeman had 2 assists each. It took Prairie a bit to get going as Nezperce led 1-2 with 5:30 left in the quarter. Prairie then scored the next 23 straight points to take control. Bruner connected on his first 4 shots of the game for 8 first quarter points as Prairie took a 20-2 lead at the end of the period. 
They then scored the first 4 points of the second on a pair of free throws by Ross and a basket by Arnzen to take a 24-2 lead. Prairie had a 10-0 run later in the quarter as they built a 39-9 halftime lead. Defense triggered a lot of the offense as Prairie forced Nezperce into 21 first half turnovers, 13 in the first quarter alone. Prairie continued the onslaught in the third quarter as they opened the quarter with 7 straight points and took a 49-18 lead into the final period where they outscored the Indians 11-1. Bruner wound up with 18 points to lead the scoring with Arnzen adding 13. Schlader scored 7, Ross 6, Jared Higgins and Hankerson 5 each, Bryson Higgins 3, Terran Peery 2 and John Mager 1. Prairie also had a 36-23 edge on the boards with Ross pulling down 11 to lead the team. Schlader had 5 steals while Hankerson and Arnzen had 4 each. Jared Higgins had 4 assists while Bruner had 3. Prairie was 24 for 53 from the field, 45%, and 11 for 20 at the line, 55%. Nezperce was 8 for 33 from the field, 24%, and 1 for 4 at the line, 25%. Prairie is now 8-0 on the season and 3-0 in league play. Prairie also dominated the 2-quarter JV game 35-13. Prairie jumped out to a 9-1 lead and led 20-7 after 8 minutes as Shears scored 7, John Mager 5 and Peery 4. Subs played nearly the entire second period and still managed to outscore Nezperce 15-6. Tyson Schlader scored 5 and Ryan Glimp 4 to lead the way in the second period. Shears had 7points to lead the scoring with John Mager and Schlader scoring 5 each. Peery, Daniel Mager and Glimp scored 4 each while Dalgliesh, Anderson and Luke Wemhoff scored 2 each. Priarie had a 20-18 edge on the board with Glimp grabbing 5 to lead the team. Shears and John Mager added 4 each. Peery had 3 steals and Anderson and Wemhoff had 2 assists each. The JV’s were 16 for 36 from the field, 44%, and 1 for 4 at the line, 25%.
