Lady
Pirates win 2 of 3
The Prairie Lady Pirates won 2 of 3 games this past week, easily defeating league opponents Troy and Potlatch while losing a non-league tilt at Grangeville. Prairie jumped out to a 17-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and extended that to 34-9 by halftime. They led 46-16 after 3 quarters and played the fourth quarter with a running clock. Kayla Schumacher had 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. She also had 5 steals. Kyndahl Ulmer scored 8 and had 9 rebounds. Sky Wilson added 10 points with Leah Holthaus scoring 5, Krystin Uhlenkott 4, Keely Schmidt 2 and Nicole Wemhoff 1. Prairie had 22 steals in the game. The JV team also won big, 37-19. Prairie jumped out to a 5-0 lead on 2 free throws by Ulmer and 3-pointer by Holthaus but Grangeville answered with a 0-11 run and led most of the rest of the game. Prairie cut the deficit to 9-11 by the end of the first quarter and to 13-14 in the second after a 3 minute stretch where neither team scored. Grangeville pulled away again though to lead 17-22 at the half. Prairie opened the third quarter with a 12-4 run to take back the lead with Ulmer scoring the go-ahead basket at the 4:23 mark. She added a pair of free throws to make it 29-26 but Grangeville’s Chantel Key quickly erased that with a 3-pointer and a putback to put Grangeville back in the lead. A putback by Wemhoff and a steal and drive for a basket by Uhlenkott put Prairie back on top at 33-31 but another 3 by Key gave Grangeville the lead for good. Schumacher wound up 20 points to lead Prairie in scoring while Ulmer had 10 points and 17 rebounds. Holthaus added 6 points with Uhlenkott scoring 4 and Wemhoff and Wilson 2 each. Prairie had a 42-33 rebounding edge led by Ulmer. Schumacher added 8 boards while Wemhoff and Uhlenkott had 7 each. Uhlenkott had 10 steals to lead the defense and was working so hard on that end of the floor she was literally gasping for breath in the fourth quarter. Wemhoff had 3 assists. Prairie was 15 for 49 from the field in the game, 31%, and 11 for 21 at the line, 52%. Grangeville was 18 for 46 from the field, 39%, and 11 for 18 at the line, 61%. In the JV game Prairie got off to a fast start and held on for a 35-27 win. Prairie shut out Grangeville in the first quarter as Shayla VonBargen scored 6 points to lead Prairie to an 11-0 lead. They made it 15-2 in the second quarter before Grangeville started to rally. They cut the lead to 17-11 by halftime. A basket each by VonBargen and Kylie Tidwell opened the third quarter scoring and pushed the lead back to 10 points. Grangeville cut the lead back down to 5 but Prairie scored 8 straight to lead by 13. They led 29-19 after 3 quarters. Grangeville got back within 5 again in the fourth quarter but could get no closer. VonBargen scored 12 points to lead the JVs with Sarah Seubert scoring 8, Natasha Gimmeson and Chaye Uptmor 5 each, Tidwell 3 and Sierra Latimer 2. Seubert had 8 rebounds to lead Prairie to a 33-30 edge on the boards. VonBargen had 4 steals while Gimmeson had 3. Uptmor had 4 assists. Prairie had back-to-back games of 86 and 85 points back in the 1991-92 season and we can’t remember a scoring outburst like that since. Potlatch scored first in the game but Prairie then scored 15 straight points, 7 by Schumacher and 6 by Ulmer. Potlatch rallied somewhat but Prairie still led 22-10 by the end of the quarter. Potlatch committed just 3 turnovers in the quarter but was just 3 for 14 from the field while Prairie was 8 for 21 and dominated on the glass with 19 rebounds to just 5 for Potlatch. Schumacher added 8 points in the second quarter and had a double-double by halftime as she had 15 points and 11 rebounds in just the first half. Prairie led 38-21 at halftime. Then came the third quarter and Prairie put together one of the most dominant quarters in their history and that includes 8 state titles and 25 state tournament appearances. Prairie put up an amazing 36 points on 15 for 26 shooting (58%) while limiting Potlatch to just 5 points and forcing 10 turnovers. Prairie also continued to dominate on the glass to the tune of a 15-2 margin in the quarter. Ulmer scored 10 points in the quarter while Hailey Danly scored 7 and Holthaus and Schumacher added 6 each. Prairie nearly doubled their entire first half output as they took a 74-26 lead into the fourth quarter. If not for the running clock rule with a 30 or more point lead, Prairie might have set a new team scoring record as that rule wasn’t around in the early 90’s. Schumacher wound up scoring 23 points with 15 rebounds while Ulmer scored 18 with 19 rebounds and 4 assists. Danly also hit double figures with 10 points while Wilson scored 9, Shayla VonBargen 8, Holthaus 6, Uhlenkott 5 and Wemhoff and Schmidt 2 each. Prairie had a 57-26 rebounding advantage. Schumacher had 4 steals while Uhlenkott, Ulmer and Danly had 3 each. Prairie was 35 for 81 in the game, 43%, and 10 for 15 from the line, 67%. Potlatch was 14 for 45 from the field, 31%, and 7 for 12 from the line, 58%. Prairie is now 10-2 on the season and 4-1 in league play. The JV team also won big as they beat Potlatch 52-22. Prairie jumped out to a 10-0 lead and led 21-4 at the end of the first quarter. Gimmeson scored 7 in the quarter while VonBargen and Uptmor had 6 each. Prairie went to the second unit in the second quarter and Potlatch outscored them by just 8-10 as Prairie took a 29-14 halftime lead. In the third quarter Prairie scored the first 13 points and outscored the Loggers 19-4 in the quarter as VonBargen scored 9 and Tidwell 8 in the period. With a 48-18 lead, the fourth quarter had a running clock and each team scored just 4 points. VonBargen had 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Tidwell also had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Uptmor scored 10 while Gimmeson scored 9 and Selina Davila, Latimer, Sam Remacle and Maddison Ulmer scored 2 each. Prairie had a 43-37 rebounding edge. Tidwell had 7 steals while Gimmeson had 6 and VonBargen and Uptmor had 5 each as Prairie forced 33 turnovers, 28 of them on steals. Tidwell and Uptmor each had 3 assists. Prairie was 24 for 73 from the field, 33%, and 3 for 4 at the line, all by VonBargen, 75%. Potlatch was 10 for 36 from the field, 28%, and 2 for 6 from the line, 33%.
