Lady Pirates win 3 league games
The Prairie Lady Pirates played 3 league home games and claimed a share of first place with wins over C.V., 60-29; Lapwai, 64-57 and Genesee 55-21.
Vs. C.V.
Against Clearwater Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 14, the Lady Pirates turned what was a close game at halftime into a runaway as they won 60-29.
Prairie jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first quarter due as much to their dominance on the offensive glass as anything.Kayla Schumacher has a wide open look for a lay-up against C.V. Also shown is Krystin Uhlenkott.
Prairie connected on just 5 of 26 shots from the field but better than half of their 21 first quarter rebounds came on the offensive end giving Prairie numerous second chances.
C.V. scored the final points of the quarter to make it 14-4.
In the second quarter Prairie pushed the lead to 12 points at 17-5 and again at 21-9 but C.V. was able to close within 5 at 24-19 late in the half as they hit 7 of 11 second quarter shots.
Kayla Schumacher kept Prairie on top as she scored 15 of their 26 first half points, 9 in the first quarter and 6 in the second.
In the third quarter the defense clamped down and C.V. hit just 2 of 9 attempts. Prairie opened the quarter with an 8-2 run that pushed the lead to 34-21. They eventually built the lead to 45-27 by the end of the quarter with Schumacher adding another 8 points.
In the fourth quarter C.V. resorted to mostly 3-point shooting and hit just 1 of 10 shots. They were 0 for 7 from long range.
Prairie opened the quarter with a 12-0 run that pushed the lead to 30 points with 3:57 left and led to a running clock the rest of the way.
C.V. scored their only fourth quarter basket with 3:30 left as Prairie won by 31.
Schumacher wound up with 25 points and 16 rebounds while Ulmer had 13 points and 29 rebounds. Krystin Uhlenkott and Sky Wilson added 7 points each with Keely Schmidt scoring 6 and Hailey Danly 2.
As you would imagine with Schumacher and Ulmer combining for 45 rebounds, Prairie dominated on the glass 73-33. 
Leah Holthaus had 5 steals in the game with Schumacher adding 4. Holthaus and Nicole Wemhoff each had  assists.
Prairie was 23 for 85 from the field, 27%, and 11 for 18 at the line, 61%. C.V. was 12 for 43 from the field, 28%, and 4 for 9 at the line, 44%.

Vs. Lapwai
In a return game against the team to give them their only league loss, Prairie led nearly the entire way and beat Lapwai 64-57 Friday, Jan. 17.
Lapwai scored a 3-pointer to open the game but Prairie came back with 5 straight points to take the lead. Lapwai managed to tie the score at 5 and at 10 but otherwise Prairie led the whole first quarter. They used free throws to their advantage as the Pirates hit 10 of 17 at the line for half their points as they took a 20-16 lead into the second quarter.
Leah Holthaus hit some big shots against Lapwai including this second quarter 3-pointer.Ulmer did most of the damage at the line as she hit 7 of 9 at the line while Kayla Schumacher score 8 points in the quarter.
Prairie opened the second quarter with a 10-3 run that gave them a 30-19 lead.
Lapwai rallied back within 6 at 30-24 before Holthaus connected on a 3-pointer. Holthaus added 2 more baskets to help Prairie keep the lead at the half at 36-32.
Lapwai was able to tie the score in the third quarter at 39 and at 41 but Wilson put them back on top each time with a basket.
Prairie’s lead was cut to 45-44 by the end of the quarter.
Lapwai took their second lead of the game early in the fourth at 45-46 but a basket by Uhlenkott put Prairie back on on top and started a 6-0 run as Wemhoff and Ulmer each added baskets.
Lapwai cut the lead to 51-50 but Schumacher scored to keep Prairie on top. Lapwai answered with a pair of free throws but a 3-pointer by Holthaus started a 7-0 run that put Prairie back on top by 8 at 60-52 with 2:06 to play.
Lapwai had 1 last rally in them as they cut the lead to 60-57 with 1:28 left but Schumacher responded with a pair of baskets to give Prairie their final margin of 7 points.
Schumacher wound up with 20 points, her fifth straight game with at least 20, to lead Prairie in scoring. Ulmer scored 14. Both girls had double doubles as Ulmer had 21 rebounds while Schumacher had 13.
Holthaus chipped in with 11 big points while Uhlenkott scored 8 with 10 rebounds. Wilson scored 6 and Wemhoff had 5.
Despite 3 players in double figures in rebounds, Prairie had just a 52-47 edge on the boards.
Holthaus had 5 steals while Wemhoff had 5 assists with Uhlenkott, Schumacher and Wilson adding 3 assists each.
Wemhoff did an outstanding job of bringing the ball upcourt against Lapwai’s defensive pressure.
Prairie was 25 for 55 from the field, 45%, and 12 for 29 at the line, 41%. Lapwai was 21 for 68 from the field, 31%, and 12 for 23 at the line, 52%.
In the JV game Lapwai scored 10 straight late in the game to turn a 37-34 deficit into a 39-44 win.
The game was close throughout although Lapwai led most of the way.
Lapwai led 7-11 at the end of the first quarter and 22-23 at the half. Shayla VonBargen scored 8 first half points and Chaye Uptmor added 6.
2 steals and ensuing full-court drives by Uptmor early in the third quarter led to a 26-24 Prairie lead but Lapwai answered with a 0-7 run to retake the lead. Prairie trailed 30-32 after 3 quarters.
Prairie opened the fourth quarter with a 7-2 run to take a 37-34 lead with 4:52 left but then Lapwai upped the defensive pressure and turnovers contributed to the Wildcats’ 0-10 run that gave them the win.
Uptmor wound up with 15 points to lead the JVs in scoring with VonBargen adding 10. Sarah Seubert and Sierra Latimer scored 5 each while Natasha Gimmeson and Kylie Tidwell scored 2 each.
Prairie had a 53-45 rebounding edge with VonBargen grabbing 13 rebounds while Seubert had 11 and Uptmor 9.
Uptmor had 4 steals while VonBargen had 3. Gimmeson and Tidwell had 2 assists each.
Prairie was 16 for 63 from the field, 25%, and 7 for 25 from the line, 28%. Lapwai was 15 for 52 from the field, 29%, and 13 for 21 from the line, 62%.

Vs. Genesee
On Saturday, Jan. 18, the Lady Pirates cruised past third place Genesee, winning easily 55-21 at Cottonwood.Keely Schmidt goes for a lay-up against Genesee as Krystin Uhlenkott watches.
Genesee scored first in the game but Prairie scored 7 straight to take the lead for good.
Genesee got back within 2 at 9-7 on a 3-pointer by high scoring guard Kaleigh Ranisate but Prairie then reeled off 9 straight points to end the first quarter with an 18-7 lead, despite losing Schumacher to foul trouble.
Schumacher was whistled for 3 quick fouls and wound up sitting for the rest of the half, causing her to break her string of 5 straight games with 20 or more points.
Keely Schmidt came off the bench to help pick up the slack with her best game of the new year.
Wilson opened the second quarter scoring with a 3-pinter and with Ulmer scoring 4 and Schmidt 3, Prairie outscored Genesee 15-9 in the quarter to take a 33-16 lead at the half.
Ranisate, who had 10 of Genesee’s 16 first half points, was shut out in the second half as Prairie held Genesee to just 8 second half points.
Schmidt went 6 for 6 at the line in the third quarter and Schumacher finally got untracked with 5 points as Prairie outscored the Bulldogs 16-5 in the third period.
Genesee also lost their coach at the 2:02 mark as he loudly protested a non-call on the Prairie offensive end. He got hit with a technical and then a second one as he continued to berate the referees. Ulmer made 3 of the 4 ensuing free throws, which were part of a 12-0 run by Prairie that carried into the fourth quarter.
27 seconds into the fourth quarter Prairie made it a 30 point lead that led to a running clock the rest of the game. The play was noteworthy as Uhlenkott went after a missed shot and saved it from going out of bounds. Her toss back inbounds went right to Schumacher who was in position for an easy lay-up. That gave Uhlenkott both an offensive rebound and an assist on the play.
Ulmer wound up as Prairie’s leading scorer with 14 points. Schmidt scored 11 with Uhlenkott scoring 8, Schumacher 7, Holthaus 6, Wilson 5 and Danly 4.
Prairie dominated the boards 43-26 with Uhlenkott pulling down 12 and Ulmer 11. 
Despite sitting most of the first half Schumacher still led the team in steals with 4. Uhlenkott and Wemhoff had 3 assists each.
Prairie was 15 for 47 from the field, 32%, and 21 for 37 from the line, 57%. Genesee was 7 for 35 from the field, 20%, and 8 for 13 at the line, 62%.
With the 3 wins Prairie improves to 13-3 on the season and 7-1 in league play.
The JV game was also one-sided as Prairie rolled to a 56-24 win.
VonBargen scored the first two baskets of the game and Prairie never trailed. She wound up with 6 first quarter points while Uptmor scored 7 as Prairie led 21-6 at the quarter break.
Prairie increased the lead to 29-12 by halftime.
They started the third quarter with a 13-0 run and led 48-19 heading into the fourth.
Uptmor wound up with a game-high 20 points to lead the Pirates. She scored 10 in each half. Tidwell scored 9, Seubert 7, VonBargen and Gimmeson 6 each, Salena Davila 4 and Latimer and Abbie Uhlenkott 2 each.
Prairie had a 47-28 advantage on the boards with Uptmor pulling down 13.
Tidwell and Uhlenkott had 7 steals each and Uptmor had 5 assists.
The JVs were 25 for 63 from the field, 40%, and 6 for 12 from the line, 50%. Genesee was 11 for 45 from the field, 24%, and 0 for 3 at the line.
