Pirates finish regular season with 3 wins
The Prairie Lady Pirates finished their regular season with 3 more wins and take a 9 game winning streak into the district tournament. On Tuesday, Jan. 28 they clobbered Kamiah 72-11 in a league game. On Senior Night Friday, Jan. 31 they blew past Potlatch 83-32 to finish up their league season at 11-1, tied for first place. Finally on Saturday, Feb. 1 they won at Kendrick 64-40 in a game against the Division 2 league champs. Prairie raced to a 22-4 lead by the end of the first quarter with runs of 6 and 12 points as they connected on 10 of 14 shots. Kyndahl Ulmer scored 8 and Kayla Schumacher 6 in the period as neither missed a shot from the field. The second unit players got most of the second quarter playing time and outscored Kamiah 15-0 as Prairie took a 37-4 lead. Keely Schmidt and Hailey Danly each scored 4 in the quarter while Krystin Uhlenkott added a 3-pointer. Prairie made it a 23-0 run in the fourth quarter as Leah Holthaus and Schumacher scored 4 points each to open the second half. Prairie was up 57-9 after 3 quarters. They outscored Kamiah 15-2 in the final period with a running clock. Ulmer wound up scoring 18 to lead the team with Schumacher scoring 16. Each had a double-double as Schumacher had 11 rebounds and Ulmer had 10. Everyone in the lineup wound up with at least 2 points with Holthaus scoring 9, Schmidt and Danly 8 each, Uhlenkott 5 and Nicole Wemhoff, Sky Wilson, Shayla VonBargen and Natasha Gimmeson 2 each. Prairie had a 43-20 rebounding edge. VonBargen, Danly, Ulmer, Holthaus and Schmidt had 2 steals each while Wemhoff had 6 assists. Prairie was 32 for 61 from the field, 52%, and 7 for 14 at the line, 50%. Kamiah was 3 for 29 from the field, 10%, and 5 for 9 at the line, 56%. Prairie also easily won the JV game 55-17. Wilson came out firing as she hit 8 of 11 first quarter shots and added a free throw good for 17 points in the first quarter alone. She attempted just 2 shots the rest of the game but still wound up as Prairie’s leading scorer. Thanks to Wilson, Prairie led 24-7 by the end of the first quarter. Ulmer added 5 points and Schumacher scored the other 2 off the bench. In the second quarter Schmidt and Holthaus got into the scoring column. Holthaus hit a couple of 3-point bombs and picked up the assist on Schmidt’s basket. Schumacher also scored 6 in the quarter as Prairie took a 47-17 lead by halftime. Wemhoff scored 5 points in the third quarter and 2 more in the fourth as all 5 seniors scored at least 6 points in the game. Prairie’s offense kept rolling in the third quarter adding 24 more points as the Pirates took a 71-25 lead into the fourth. They added 12 more in the fourth to equal the season high output of 83 they had at Potlatch a couple weeks ago. In addition to Wilson’s team-high 17 points, Ulmer scored 14, Schumacher 12, Holthaus 10, Wemhoff 7, Holthaus and Danly 6 each, Uhlenkott 5, VonBargen 4 and Gimmeson 2 as everyone scored at least 2 points for the second game in a row. Prairie dominated the boards 40-22 with Ulmer pulling down 12. Holthaus had 5 steals and 3 assists while Wemhoff had 4 assists. Prairie was 36 for 69 from the field, 52%, and 8 for 12 at the line, 75%. Potlatch was 10 for 41 from the field, 24%, and 4 for 9 at the line, 44%. Prairie also had little trouble winning the JV game as they rolled to a 58-21 win in their final 4 quarter game of the season. Sarah Seubert and Kylie Tidwell dominated the first quarter scoring with 11 and 10 points respectively as Prairie rolled to a 23-6 lead by the end of the period. The pace cooled off in the second quarter but Prairie still took a 30-12 lead by halftime. Shayla VonBargen had a hot third quarter with 10 of Prairie’s 18 points as the Pirates took a 48-16 lead into the fourth. Seubert scored 6 of Prairie’s 10 fourth quarter points to finish with a game-high 19. She also added 13 rebounds. Tidwell scored 14, VonBargen 10, Chaye Uptmor and Selena Davila 6 each, Abbie Uhlenkott 2 and Sam Remacle 1. Prairie had a 49-27 advantage on the board with VonBargen and Tidwell each adding 8 rebounds to Seubert’s team-high total. Natasha Gimmeson had 6 steals while Remacle and Tidwell had 4 each. Gimmeson also had 2 assists. The JV’s were 24 for 64 from the field, 38%, and 9 for 19 at the line, 47%. Potlatch was 9 for 37 from the field, 24%, and 2 for 7 at the line 29%. back to tie the game at 9.
Kendrick took their only lead of the game at 13-14 with 2:04 left in the first quarter. 7 seconds later Ulmer scored a pair of free throws to put Prairie back on top and then stole the ball and picked up an assist on a basket by Danly. Wilson finished off the first quarter scoring with a driving lay-up and added a free throw as she was fouled on the play to make it 20-14. A free throw by Ulmer, a basket by Danly and 2 free throws by Schmidt made it a 12-0 run and a 25-14 Prairie lead early in the second quarter. Kendrick was limited to just 2 baskets in the second quarter with Schmidt scoring 6 all by herself for Prairie. The Pirates led 35-18 at the half. Kendrick twice got as close as 14 in the third quarter but an 11-0 run to finish the third period gave Prairie a 50-25 lead. Fourth quarter scoring was very even at 14-15. Ulmer wound up with 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead Prairie in both categories. Schumacher added 12 points while Schmidt scored 11. Uhlenkott scored 6, Danly 4, Wilson 3 and Holthaus, Wemhoff and Chaye Uptmor 2 each. Prairie had what will likely be their district squad suited up for the game as Uptmor, Sarah Seubert and Kylie Tidwell were all called up from the JV squad. Prairie had a 44-31 rebounding edge. Schumacher almost had a double-double with 9 rebounds. Schmidt and Ulmer had 5 steals each while Wilson and Holthaus had 3 assists each. Prairie was 24 for 60 from the field, 40%, and 15 for 19 at the line, 79%. Kendrick was 17 for 50 from the field, 34%, and 3 for 5 at the line, 60%. Prairie ends their regular season with a 17-3 record, 11-1 in league play. In a 2-quarter JV game Prairie jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter and wound up winning 31-11. VonBargen was 6 for 7 shooting in the first quarter for 12 points while Tidwell scored 5 and Uptmor 4. Prairie led 25-6 at the end of the quarter. VonBargen’s 12 points led the team in scoring with Uptmor scoring 6, Tidwell 5, and Seubert and Davila 4 each. Prairie had a 17-13 rebounding edge with VonBargen grabbing 5. Uhlenkott and VonBargen had 3 steals each while Sierra Latimer and Gimmeson had 2 assists each. Prairie was 15 for 39 from the field, 38%, and 1 for 4 at the line, 25%. Kendrick was 5 for 10 from the field, 50%, and did not attempt any free throws as Prairie was whistled for just 1 foul. Despite playing just 2 quarters Prairie managed to force Kendrick into 27 turnovers. 15 by way of steals.
