girls lose season finale
In a battle for the #2 seed into District the Summit Lady Patriots struggled to score at Nezperce and lost 17-27 Tuesday, Jan. 28. Summit wasn’t hitting anything from the outside and found it tough going trying to get inside against Nezperce. 
Summit scored first in the game as Megan Seubert managed to get inside for a score and they took the lead again when Sarah Chmelik scored what turned out to be her only 2 points of the game. Nezperce then went on a 0-7 run to take the lead for good. Summit went on a 4:10 drought before Megan Rehder connected from just inside the 3-point line. Summit trailed 6-11 at the quarter break. Neither team scored much in the in the second quarter as only 4 baskets were scored, 2 by each team. Summit appeared to be limited to just a putback by Seubert until Rehder connected for a 3-pointer with 9 seconds left that cut the deficit to 11-15 at the half. Summit went on another big scoring drought in the third as Ally Hale scored Summit’s only basket with 2:44 left on an 18 foot bank shot. Summit trailed 13-21 heading into the fourth as their defense was forcing Nezperce into perimeter shots and keeping them in the game. Summit was unable to cut into the lead in the fourth as they lost by 10. Seubert was Summit’s leading scorer with 6 points with Rehder scoring 5, Hale 4 and Chmelik 2. Nezperce also had the rebounding edge at 31-42. Seubert led Summit with 10 rebounds while Hale had 8. Rachael Frei, Hale and Rehder had 3 steals each and 4 different players had 1 assist each. Summit was 8 for 36 from the field, 22%, and 0 for 4 at the line. Nezperce was 11 for 50 from the field, 22%, and 5 for 13 at the line, 38%. With the loss Summit ends their regular season at 15-4 and 9-3 in league play, good for third place behind Kendrick and Nezperce. Summit boys win twice The Summit Patriots picked up a pair of wins this past week, holding on to win at Nezperce 53-52 in a league game Tuesday, Jan. 28, and then winning easily over Meadows Valley 65-23 Thursday, Jan. 30, at Cottonwood. 
Nezperce scored first in the game with a pair of free throws. Matthew Schwartz picked up his apparent 2nd foul on the play and went to the bench but apparently that foul was credited instead to Michael Waters. Schwartz sat out the rest of the quarter anyway. Josh Lustig scored Summit’s first point and Waters scored the next 5 as Summit took a 6-2 lead. 2 more points by Waters made it 8-4 at the end of the quarter. Summit took control in the second quarter after Nezperce had cut the lead to 8-6. Summit then went on a 13-0 run to take a 21-6 lead. Waters and Schwartz each scored 4 points in that run with defensive rebounds and steals leading to Summit points. Tyler Krogh came off the bench to add 3 points. Nezperce broke the run with a pair of 3-pointers by Casey Beauchamp but Summit was able to take a 27-17 lead into the halftime break. A 7-0 run by Summit in the third quarter gave Summit their largest lead at 18 points, 38-20, with 4:05 left in the period. Nezperce came right back with a 0-10 run of their own that saw Kristian Carpenter hit a pair of 3’s. A lay-in by Lustig broke the run and Patrick Chmelik scored to put the lead back at 12, 42-30. Nezperce scored the final 4 points of the quarter to pull within 8 at 42-34. Nezperce cut the lead down to 5 at 46-41 on a 3 by Carpenter but a basket each by Dean Stubbers and Lustig plus a 3 by Schwartz put Summit back on top by 12, 53-41, with 4:16 left. Those were the last points Summit would score though as they went to a trying to run clock on offense instead of score and lost all their momentum. Nezperce meanwhile put on a furious rally with three 3-pointers plus a pair of free throws that cut the lead to 53-52 with 25 seconds left. After Carpenter’s fourth 3 of the half cut the lead to 1, Summit threw the ball away on the inbounds pass. Despite trailing by 1, Nezperce decided to run the clock down for a do or die shot. Chmelik blocked a shot with about 4 seconds left and Nezperce had 2 more wild tosses at the hoop before time ran out. Waters wound up as the leading scorer with 17 points with Lustig right behind with 16. Schwartz scored 11 with Chmelik scoring 4, Krogh 3 and Dean Stubbers 2. Nezperce had the rebounding edge at 35-40. Summit was led by Waters with 10 and Lustig with 9. Waters had 4 steals and Lustig had 3 assists. Summit was 23 for 47 from the field, 49%, and 6 for 14 at the line, 43%. Nezperce was 16 for 62 from the field, 26%, and 12 for 15 at the line, 80%. Summit rolled to a 20-6 lead after one period and led 45-12 at the half. They backed off some in the third but still added to the lead, 59-17. The fourth quarter was played under a running clock. Reserves got a lot of playing time with everybody on the squad scoring at least 2 points. Waters led the way with 12 points with Chris Osborne scoring 11. Stubbers scored 8, Caleb Currier 7, Noah Arnzen 6, Krogh 5, Thomas Schwartz, Lustig, and Matthew Schwartz 4 each and Chmelik and Nathan Beckman 2 each. Osborne added 12 rebounds to lead the team. With the wins Summit improves to 11-4 on the season and 8-3 in league with 1 league game left against Timberline. It would appear that they have the #2 seed locked up going into District.
