suffer first loss
This past week the Prairie Pirates clinched the White Pine League title with an 85-38 win at Potlatch Tuesday, Feb. 4 then suffered their first loss of the season, 59-69 in overtime to Salmon River at Riggins Thursday, Feb. 6. Prairie jumped out to a 30-5 lead by the end of the first quarter and wound up outscoring the Loggers in every quarter. The Pirates led 53-21 at the half and 73-32 after 3 quarters. The 85 points is the Pirates’ highest output of the season. Tanner Ross led 4 Pirates in double figures in scoring with 19 points with Rhett Schlader scoring 17, Tyler Hankerson 14 and Jared Higgins with 10. Jake Bruner and Dylon Bruegeman added 7 points each with Lucas Arnzen scoring 6 and Bryson Higgins 5. Bruner had 12 rebounds to lead the team and Arnzen had 5 assists. Prairie trailed much of the game as Salmon River led 19-20 at the end of the first quarter and 31-34 at the half. Prairie trailed 41-45 after three quarters but rallied to take a 55-53 lead late in the game. Salmon River’s Leighton VanderEsch then hit a 15 footer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. The game stayed close in overtime until late when the Savages’ Jimmy Shepherd hit a 3-pointer to put Salmon River up by 4 with 1:10 to play. At that point Prairie resorted to fouling and the Savages were able to hit their free throws and turn a close game into a 10-point win. Schlader and Arnzen scored 18 points each to lead the Pirates in scoring with Bruner adding 10, Ross 6, Jared Higgins 5 and Hankerson 2. It’s not like Prairie lost to a run of the mill team as Salmon River is the defending 1-A Division 2 champions and is ranked #1 in the state this year. Prairie gave the Savages one of their only 2 losses earlier in the year. Prairie is now 17-1 on the season and 10-0 in league play. The Pirates won the JV game, no score available.
