In 2009 some environment-minded trailblazers made an initial agreement with 800 residents of Idaho County to divert recyclable materials from unhealthy disposal. Since then, many polite reminders have been circulated in hopes of attracting more partners and reassuring others that Idaho County Recycling is the best answer to many pollution problems. If we were to compare our care of the Earth with a personal credit account, we can only hope that we have accumulated enough assets in our storehouse to offset our many “withdrawals.” Idaho County Recycling collects metal. Steel from cans and other sources is the most recycled packaging material. In the United States, it is estimated that we recycle about 63% of steel cans, but only about 52% of aluminum cans. The term “tin can” reflects the use of tinplate steel that combines the physical strength and relatively low price of steel with the corrosion resistance of tin. Our “commodities” bins have three sections. The far-left-hand-side section is for collecting recyclable metal, mixed tin-plate/steel and aluminum cans. The weight ratio of aluminum cans to steel cans is expected to be between 20:80 and 25:75. We accept containers up to 1 gallon in size. Metal containers must be open and rinsed. Paper labels must be removed, and these labels are recycled with white/office paper. The following are considered prohibitive contaminates: Foils (aluminum or tin); aerosol or any pressurized type of containers; anything used to contain hydrocarbons, fuel, pesticides and herbicides. In addition, please secure all loose lids (inside crushed cans, if possible) because they become a flying hazard for workers at Lewis Clark Recyclers, Inc. in Lewiston. If you can fit your recycling into a brown paper bag, we can also recycle the bag and cut down on the number of plastic bags that cannot be recycled. Thank you. |
