state champions, 5 school records
Lucas Arnzen in the 400 meter dash and the girls 4x100 and 4x200 relays each won a state title and each broke a school record at the State Track Meet at Middleton Friday and Saturday, May 16-17. In all there were 5 school records broken at the State Meet. Arnzen broke his own school record of 51.0 in the 400 in the preliminaries where he had a time of 50.89. He won the finals with a time of 51.0. He also broke the school record in the 200 with a time of 23.29 in the preliminaries. That broke Keith Nida’s record of 23.35 from 2003. He finished 4th in the finals with a time of 23.31. He also finished third in the 100 in 11.69. Keely Schmidt, Mykaela McWilliams, Shayla VonBargen and Krystin Uhlenkott were the lineup for both state championship relays. In the 4x100 they had a time of 51.42 breaking the record of 51.7 set by Lisa Schmidt, Shelley Wren, Lannette Gonzales and Veronica Riener at State in 1985. In the 4x400 they ran a 4:12.25, breaking the record of 4:15.8 set by Jodi Kaschmitter, Kari Duclos, Tracy Hinkelman and Lynn Gehring in 1999. McWilliams also had a second place finish in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.32 and a fourth place finish in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.38. The 300 hurdle time is also a school record, breaking the mark of 48.52 set by Tabitha Sonnen at State in 2006. Uhlenkott also finished third in the triple jump with personal best of 33’5¾” and fourth in the long jump at 15’4”. Brandi Gehring earned a state medal with a 4th place finish in the high jump and a personal best of 4’8”. VonBargen finished 9th in the event at 4’6”. Chaye Uptmor also earned a state medal with a fifth place finish in the 800 in a time of 2:30.99. Heidi Holubetz finished 8th in the shot put with a mark of 33’6½”. For the boys team Peter Spencer earned a state medal with a fifth place finish in the 1600 in 4:42.45. He struggled in the 3200 posting his worst time of the year to finish 9th in 10:55.99. The boys medley relay also earned a state medal as Bryson Higgins, Isaiah Shears, Arnzen and Spencer placed fourth with a time of 3:49.38. As a team the girls earned a state trophy with a fourth place finish and 53.5 points. The boys placed 9th with 30 points.
