Amendment I: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. ratified December 15, 1791 Mr. Christopher Hempstead was a teacher on the Camas Prairie is now living in Saudi Arabia where there is no freedom of religion. He wants the students to learn to appreciate what we have in this country. He is sponsoring a contest and putting up the prize money. All students in grades 1 thru 8 are encouraged to put some effort into this project and do their best. Prizes for each age group are: $500 1st place, $300 2nd place and $200 3rd place. Grades 1-4 are to recreate your favorite place of worship. Medium: water color, paint, colored pencil, pastels, wood, diorama, sculpture, or a combination of any of these. Sorry, no computer generated artwork will be accepted-only original designs. Size: No larger than 8 ½ X 11 inches. Write on a separate piece of paper 2-5 sentences why you like going to this place. Tell why this place is important to you and your family. Grades 5-8 are to write 3-5 page essay (600-1350 words) explaining why you appreciate the freedom to practice your religion in this country. What would you and your family do if the government interfered in your freedom to practice religion? (This is the "free exercise clause" from the 1st Amendment). The students can word process or write in long hand. The paper should be neat and legible. Include all aspects of the 1st amendment. Contest is open to students at Prairie Elementary and Junior High, Summit Academy, St. Peter & Paul School, Grangeville Elementary School, and Home-schoolers in these districts. All entries must be accompanied by a copy of the Student Entry Form. Entries may be turned in at the school office or sent by email to address below.
