Pirates have busy week
The Prairie volleyball team had a busy week from Tuesday, Sept. 16 through Monday, Sept. 22 with 2 league matches, 2 non-league matches and an all-day tournament. They went 1-1 in the league matches, losing in 3 games at Genesee Tuesday, Sept. 16 and then sweeping Kamiah on Thursday, Sept. 18. They were 2-0 in non-league matches, sweeping Kendrick on Thursday, Sept. 18 and then sweeping Grangeville on Monday, Sept. 22 in the Dig Pink match. Finally they won 10 of 15 games and 3 of 5 matches to help Idaho to a resounding win in the Border Battle Tournament at Pomeroy on Saturday, Sept. 20. The opening game went back and forth all the way. Neither team led by more than 1 point until Krystin Uhlenkott scored a sideout kill to break an 11-11 tie. A stuff block by Shayla VonBargen and an ace by Chaye Uptmor followed to give Prairie a 14-11 lead. Genesee came right back to tie it at 14 and the back and forth battle was on again. Prairie held their last lead at 19-17 after a first touch kill by Holli Uhlorn. Genesee then scored the sideout and then built their biggest lead of the game at 20-24. Uhlenkott staved off the first game point with a kill. A stuff by VonBargen and a kill by Kayla Schumacher cut the lead to 23-24 before Genesee scored the game-winning kill. In the second game Prairie fell behind early but rallied and took a 15-9 lead after a 5-point service run by vonBargen that included 3 aces. Schumacher added a pair of kills. Prairie held on to the lead and still led 23-20 after a kill by Schumacher. Genesee scored a sideout then Uhlorn scored a kill on a tip that gave Prairie triple-game point at 24-21. Two hitting errors and a stuff by Genesee later and it was tied at 24-24. Uhlorn scored a kill to break the run for another game-point chance but Prairie bricked the serve. An ace by Genesee gave the Bulldogs their first game point chance but Uhlenkott scored a kill to tie it at 26. Genesee then scored a sideout and Prairie was then called for a double touch on a set for the game-winner. The third game saw Prairie take an early lead again after a 5-point service run by Schumacher. She had 3 aces while Uhlenkott added 2 kills for a 7-2 lead. Genesee roared back to tie the game at 8 before Uhlenkott scored a sideout kill. Natasha Gimmeson then served Prairie into a 14-8 lead with an ace plus 2 kills each by Uhlenkott and VonBargen. They couldn’t keep Genesee down though as Genesee rallied back to within 2 at 18-16 and then tied it at 19-19. Prairie was able to take a 23-21 lead after 2 kills by Uhlenkott and an ace by Gimmeson. Genesee then scored the sideout though and served out the match. Uhlenkott had 15 kills and 1 ace in the match while Schumacher had 14 kills and 3 aces. VonBargen had 8 kills including 3 stuffs and 4 aces. Uhlorn had 6 kills including a stuff. Hailey Danly had 3 kills, 23 assists and 2 aces. Gimmeson had 1 kill, 19 assists and 3 aces. Uptmor had 1 kill and 2 aces. In the JV match Prairie beat Genesee 25-18, 25-27, 15-11. In the first game Genesee scored the first point but Prairie scored the next 3 points and never gave the lead back. A kill by Mykaela McWilliams tied it and an ace by Angela Wemhoff and a kill by Sierra Latimer put Prairie ahead. Prairie had no big service runs but had enough 2 and 3 point runs and sided out well to keep Genesee at bay. The final score was their biggest lead of the game. In the second game Prairie took a 3-1 lead again but Genesee came back to take leads of 5-10 and 10-16. Prairie was able to rally back to tie the score at 18-18 and from there on it was a back and forth battle. Prairie twice fought off game points at 23-24 and 24-25 before Genesee finally won it. In the decisive third game Latimer had a 4-point service run to give Prairie an early 6-1 lead. She had an ace while McWilliams scored 3 kills. From there Prairie was able to hold off Genesee for the win. In the opening game Kamiah served first with Schumacher scoring a kill to put Prairie up 1-0. Danly then served 4 straight aces for a 5-0 lead before a double hit led to a sideout. Kamiah scored an ace then bricked the next serve putting Schumacher on the service line. She served up 13 straight points for a 19-2 lead. She had 8 aces with Uhlenkott scoring 3 kills and Gimmeson 2. A double hit violation ended the run but Uhlenkott scored a kill on the next point and Uptmor served out the game. She had 2 aces while Uhlenkott, VonBargen and Gimmeson each added a kill. The intensity level dropped quite a bit after the easy first game and Kamiah made a game of it early, trailing just 8-6 after an ace. A back row kill by Sarah Seubert put Uhlenkott on the service line and she jumped served 4 aces with Schumacher and Danly each adding a kill for a 15-6 lead. The rest of the game was a 10-5 advantage for Prairie as they went on to win. Coach Cheyenne Hudson mixed things up a little for the third game as Gimmeson was the first server instead of Danly. She served Prairie to a 4-0 lead. Kamiah came back to pull within 1 at 4-3 and 6-5 before Schumacher scored a kill to send VonBargen to the service line. Six points later it was 13-5 as VonBargen had 4 aces with Danly and Schumacher each adding a kill. After trading sideouts, Danly then proceeded to serve out the match. She had 9 aces while Gimmeson and Schumacher each added a kill in the 11-point match ending run. Uhlenkott had 9 kills and 5 aces in the match. Schumacher had 7 kills and 8 aces. Gimmeson had 5 kills, 12 assists and 2 aces. VonBargen had 4 kills and 6 aces. Danly had 3 kills, 16 assists and 15 aces. Sarah Seubert had 1 kill and 3 aces. Uhlorn had 1 kill. Kellie Heitman had 1 kill and Uptmor had 2 aces. Coach Hudson said, “Kendrick passed really well and they’re really scrappy, have some pretty good hitters and made us play really good volleyball.” For the match Uhlenkott had 12 kills and 13 digs while Schumacher had 9 kills and 5 digs. Danly had 4 kills, 4 aces, 15 assists and 5 digs. Prairie was a big part of that with 10 wins and 5 losses. They lost to Pomeroy 13-25, 25-16, 5-15; beat St. John-Endicott 25-14, 25-22, 11-15, lost to Clarkston 24-26, 25-23, 11-15, then finished off the day by sweeping Dayton 25-19, 25-13, 15-7 and Asotin 25-10, 25-13, 15-9. Pomeroy also has some tall girls who can really hit the ball and they cruised to the opening game win. For the second game they switched sides and there was a little more serving room on that side of the court. Prairie led early on then fell behind 11-14. They came back to take a 17-15 lead after an ace by Uptmor and a kill by Uhlenkott. Pomeroy scored the side out by VonBargen got the serve back with a kill down the sideline. Gimmeson was then able to serve out the game with 4 aces along with a kill each by VonBargen and Uhlenkott and a stuff by Danly. When they switched sides again for the third game it was back to struggling as Pomeroy pulled away to an easy win. Uhlorn got the match off to a good start with a stuff for the first points then Danly served 3 aces. Schumacher and Uhlorn then combined on a block to make it 5-0. Prairie sided out each of the Eagles first 4 servers while Schumacher added 2 aces and Uptmor served up an ace and Gimmeson added a kill for a 12-3 lead. St. John finally got some service points scored to pull within 13-7 but then Uhlenkott served 4 straight jump serve aces to make it 18-7 and Prairie held on the rest of the game to win by that 11-point margin. St. John bounced back the second game with a 0-5 lead but Prairie fought back to take a 12-11 lead on a kill by Danly. St. John took the lead right back and held it for the most part until Prairie finally took the lead for good on a kill by Schumacher that made it 22-21. A jump serve ace by Danly and a stuff by Uhlorn made it 24-21. St. John fought off one game point but Prairie won it on a kill by Gimmeson that had the St. John coach telling the referee she made the wrong call on that play. The third game was close early on but St. John rallied late to pull out a 4-point win. St. John was one of the puzzling teams at the tournament as they gave Troy one of only 3 game losses on the day but also gave Kamiah one of their 3 game wins. The first game was a close battle all the way with Clarkston taking a 10-14 lead only to see Prairie battle back to tie it at 16-16. It was tied again at 17, 18, 19 and 20. Prairie finally took their first lead since 9-8 on a stuff by Gimmeson. 2 aces by Schumacher made it 23-20 but Prairie couldn’t hold on as Clarkston came back to take a 23-24 lead. A kill by Uhlenkott tied it at 24 but Clarkston then scored the next 2 points to win the game. In the second game Prairie jumped out to a 5-1 lead with Danly serving only to see Clarkston come back and take a 10-13 lead. The lead traded hands a couple more times until a kill by Uhlenkott followed by a 4-point service run by Gimmeson that included 2 aces and a kill each by Seubert and Uhlenkott put Prairie up 22-19. Clarkston scored the side out but that was followed by 4 straight bad serves, two by each side. The last was by Prairie with game point on the line at 24-21. Clarkston scored an ace to make it 24-23 but were then called for being in the net to give Prairie the game. Prairie never led in the third game after falling behind 1-6. They were able to tie it at 8-8 but never could get ahead as Clarkston wound up winning. Prairie though trailed only 1 time in the first game, at 2-3. The game was tied at 3, 4 and 5 with Prairie taking the lead for good on a kill by VonBargen that made it 6-5. Prairie pushed the lead to 15-8 only to see Dayton cut it back to 16-15. Two straight kills by Uhlenkott kept Dayton from tying it and Prairie outscored them 9-4 down the stretch. In the second game Prairie played some of their best volleyball of the season as they jumped out to an 11-0 lead. Dayton bricked a serve to open the match and Danly served for the next 10 points. She had 2 aces but the other 8 points were nearly all textbook pass-set-kill plays. The only one that wasn’t started out to be but Schumacher’s spike got blocked right back to her and she was able to slam it again for the kill. Schumacher had 4 other kills in the run with Uhlorn adding a pair and Gimmeson the other. Prairie pushed the lead to 16-4 before Dayton finally started pushing back but they could get no closer than 6 points at 16-10. A kill by Uhlenkott ended that rally and Gimmeson served 4 straight points to push the lead to 11. Dayton took the early lead in the third game with Prairie taking their first lead at 6-5 on a kill by Schumacher. After trading sideouts, VonBargen gave them some breathing room with a 4-point run that started with a Schumacher kill followed by 3 straight aces. Schumacher scored the final 3 kills of the match. 3 points service runs by Schumacher and Uptmor broke open a close game and turned a 3-2 edge into an 11-5 lead. After 6 straight sideouts, VonBargen took over and served up 5 straight points, 3 of them aces. Danly and Schumacher each added a kill for a 19-8 lead. Danly all but served out the game taking over at 20-9 and serving 4 straight before missing on a serve. Schumacher scored the game-winning kill on the next point. Prairie was in control all the way in the second game although Asotin stayed close at 7-5. 2 kills by Uhlenkott bracketed an ace by Gimmeson to make it 11-5. It was still only a 6-point edge at 17-11 when Danly scored a kill to put Schumacher on the service line. After 4 straight aces and a kill each by Gimmeson and Uhlenkott Prairie was up 24-11. Asotin fought off two game points before committing a net violation to end it. Asotin scored the first point in the third game but that was the only time they led. Prairie broke it open at 4-3 when Uhlenkott scored a kill and Uptmor followed with 5 straight service points. She had 3 aces while VonBargen and Uhlenkott each added a kill. Prairie then held on to win by 6. For the day Uhlenkott had 57 kills including a stuff plus 3 assists and 11 aces. Schumacher had 45 kills including 2 stuffs and 12 aces. VonBargen had 30 kills including 6 stuffs, 1 assist and 10 aces. Uhlorn had 23 kills, including 8 stuffs with 1 assist. Danly had 22 kills including 4 stuffs with 76 assists and 15 aces. Gimmeson had 12 kills, including 3 stuffs with 66 assists and 11 aces. Uptmor had 4 kills, 2 assists and 6 aces. Heitman had 3 kills and 2 assists and Seubert had 2 kills. As for the match Prairie swept Grangeville 25-20, 25-15, 25-13. 
Prairie jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opening game but Grangeville fought back to take a 12-13 lead before bricking a serve. A 3-point run by Danly put Prairie back on top and they never trailed again. A 4-point run by Schumacher created some separation with Uhlorn scoring a kill and a stuff in the run. Grangeville rallied back within 2 at 22-20 before Uhlenkott scored a kill. Uptmor then served the final 2 points of the game, a kill each by Uhlenkott and VonBargen. Grangeville took an early 2-5 lead in the second game but Uptmor served Prairie back to a tie as Uhlenkott and VonBargen each stuffed a Grangeville spike. Prairie took the lead for good on a block by Danly and VonBargen had a big service run to turn the game into a runaway. VonBargen had an 8 point run that included 6 jump serve aces. Schumacher and Uhlorn each added a kill as Prairie took a 19-9 lead. They wound up winning by that 10-point margin. In the third game Schumacher had a 6-point service run with 4 aces to give Prairie a 7-1 lead. Grangeville’s only lead was at 0-1. Prairie gradually built up there lead, collecting a couple service points at a time while siding out most of Grangeville’s serves. Uptmor wound up serving the final points in all three games as she served the final 3 in this one. For the match Uhlenkott had 9 kills including 2 stuffs plus 2 assists. VonBargen had 9 kills including 3 stuffs plus 2 aces. Schumacher had 6 kills and 4 aces. Danly had 6 kills including 2 stuffs plus 15 assists and 2 aces. Gimmeson had 4 kills including a stuff plus 6 assists. Uhlorn had 4 kills including a stuff. Uptmor had 1 kill, 1 assist and 3 aces. Seubert and Heitman each had 1 back row kill. Prairie is now 7-1 on the season, 10-3 if you count the 3-2 match record at Pomeroy, and 3-1 in league play. The JV team also swept Grangeville 25-22, 25-12, 15-10. The first game didn’t start well as Prairie fell behind 0-4 and 1-7 but a couple of aces each by Britney Bianchi and Leah Higgins helped Prairie get back into the game. They tied it at 10 on an ace by Sam Remacle and a kill by Sydney Bruner gave them their first lead. A couple of aces by Bruner and a 5 point run by Angela Wemhoff that included 3 aces gave them a solid lead at 20-12. Prairie got to game point on a free ball kill by Bianchi and then saw Grangeville rally with 5 straight points before a bad serve handed Prairie the game-winner. The second game was close until Wemhoff took her turn on the service line at 6-4. She served 10 straight points with 4 aces and 3 kills by Sierra Latimer to make it 16-4. Prairie then cruised to the win. In the third game it was Darlene Gehring who came up with a big service run to put Prairie ahead. She scored 4 aces and Mykaela McWilliams added a kill to give Prairie a 6-3 lead. Grangeville bounced back to take a 6-7 lead before a kill by Wemhoff sent McWilliams to the service line for 3 straight aces to give Prairie the lead for good.
