Pirates
rout C.V. Rams
The Prairie football team scored at least 60 points for the fourth straight game as they routed Clearwater Valley 64-8 in their home opener, which was also Homecoming, Friday, Sept. 26 at Cottonwood. Prairie needed just 1 play to score as Lucas Arnzen went around right end for 52 yards on the Pirates’ first play after the kickoff. Jake Bruner passed to Rhett Schlader for the 2-pointer to make it 8-0 just 17 seconds into the game. The rest of the first quarter though the Pirates got a little sloppy, turning the ball over twice and giving the Rams a first down with a penalty. They forced C.V. to punt after just 3 yards in 3 plays on their opening series but were called for roughing the punter to give the Rams a first down. C.V. would turn the ball over on downs 4 plays later with Prairie taking over at their own 38. Prairie moved the ball to the 26 before Bruner threw his first interception of the season with C.V. taking over at their own 17. C.V. was forced to punt but Prairie gave the ball right back when they fumbled on the punt return. The Rams were able to pick up a first down of their own before being forced to punt again. There was no return and Prairie took over at their own 31. The Pirates had to overcome a fourth down and 5 which Calvin Hinkelman converted on a screen pass to the left where he went 24 yards to the C.V. 25. Arnzen then took a pitch from Bruner on the option and went down the right sideline 25 yards for his second touchdown. Bruner again passed to Schlader for the 2-pointer to make it 16-0 with 10:58 left in the half. That started the second quarter onslaught. Prairie got the ball right back when Mason Dalgliesh recovered Terran Peery’s squib kickoff at the C.V. 36. A screen pass to the left to Hinkelman gained 14 yards to the 22. Arnzen then carried for just the third time in the game and ran a fly sweep to the right for 22 yards and his third touchdown. 3 carries, 99 yards, 3 touchdowns. Bruner ran in the 2-pointer to make it 24-0 just 20 seconds after their previous score. A bad snap to the punter which resulted in a 12 yard loss and Prairie taking over at the C.V. 7 set up the next score. Bruner went back to pass but wound up scrambling 7 yards for a touchdown. He passed to Isaiah Shears for the 2-pointer to make it 32-0. C.V.’s next punt wound up going straight up in the air for a net –5 yards with Prairie taking over at the C.V. 16. 4 plays later Bruner connected with Devin Bruegeman for a 3 yard scoring play. Bruegeman then caught a deflected pass in the end zone for the 2-pointer to make it 40-0. C.V.’s next possession ended on a fourth down pass interception by Hunter McWilliams with Prairie taking over at the Prairie 45. Schlader went in at quarterback and needed just 1 play to score as he found Shears open deep down the right side for at 55 yard touchdown. Schlader ran in the 2-pointer to make it 48-0 and cap off a 40-point second quarter. C.V. was held to just 3 first downs in the first half, 1 by penalty, and had a net –12 yards of offense. The 48-0 lead meant the entire second half would be played with a running clock. C.V. fumbled the ball away on the second half kickoff return with Hinkelman recovering for Prairie at the C.V. 36. Bruner, who had struggled to connect with his receivers on deep passes in the first half, threw a perfect pass to Shears down the right sideline for a 36 yard scoring play on the first play from scrimmage. Bruner then passed to Schlader for the 2-pointer to make it 56-0 just 40 seconds into the second half. With a lot of subs now getting playing time on defense, C.V. finally put together a drive, picking up 3 first downs and 47 yards before turning the ball over on downs at the Prairie 36. Prairie gave the ball back on a fumble on the first play of the third quarter with C.V. recovering at the 50. C.V. needed just 7 plays to get the zero off of their side of the scoreboard as they scored from 6 yards out on a run and added the 2-pointer to make it 56-8. Prairie got those points right back as Shears was back to receive the kickoff. He took the ball at the Prairie 24 and streaked down the field for a 76 yard return. Tyson Schlader passed to Brandon Anderson for the 2-pointer to make it 64-8. Hunter Chaffee’s ensuing kickoff hit one of C.V.’s up men in the chest and Chaffee wound up recovering the ball at the Prairie 47. The third string offense managed to grind the ball down the field and nearly scored again as Tyson Schlader’s quarterback sneak on first and goal from the 3 was stopped at the 1 as time ran out. Prairie had 393 yards of offense, 236 rushing and 157 passing. Arnzen had 3 carries for 99 yards to lead the rushing attack. Hunter McWilliams had 51 yards on 7 carries. Brandon Higgins had 26 yards on 3 carries while Bruner had 24 yards on 3 carries. Anderson had 15 yards on 2 carries and Dalgliesh had 15 yards on 3 carries.
