1977
and 1978 champs to be honored
The Idaho High School Activities Association is pleased to announce the 2015 "Legends of the Game" recipients. The award was established in 2001 to help preserve the heritage of Idaho high school sports by honoring great teams of the past. Eligible basketball "Legends" include girls’ teams from at least 20 years ago and boys’ teams from at least 30 years ago. Ceremonies honoring "Legends" recipients will take place during halftime of the state 5A basketball championship games at the Idaho Center. The girls’ ceremonies are slated for February 21 and the boys’ ceremonies will take place on March 7. Prairie High School’s 1977 and 1978 girls’ basketball teams, under the direction of Coach Art Dorval, are the fourteenth recipient of the IHSAA girls "Legends of the Game" award. After starting a girls’ basketball program in 1976, the Prairie Pirates won back to back state titles in 1977 and 1978, the first state championships in school history. Over a three-year period, the Lady Pirates earned an impressive 73-3 record, including a 31-game winning streak. The 1977 team finished 26-0 while the 1978 team was 25-1 with their only loss coming to a Highland state championship team whose only loss came later in the season to Prairie. These early years set the stage for girls’ basketball at PHS and they have gone on to win nine state championships. The 1950 Orofino state champions are the boys team that will be honored. |
