Pirates
demolish Troy
Hunter McWilliams had 320 yards of offense and 4 touchdowns to lead the Prairie football team to a 64-8 thumping of previously unbeaten Troy Friday, Oct. 10 at Cottonwood. It was the first time the Pirates had beaten Troy since the 2009 season. With the 2nd ranked Trojans losing as well as #1 ranked Raft River losing to Oakley, Prairie could very well find themselves ranked #1 in the state this week for the first time since the 2010 season. Prairie got off to a good start in the game as they forced Troy into a 3 plays and punt on their first possession. The Pirates took over on their own 28 and fed Lucas Arnzen the ball on 8 of the 11 plays of their scoring drive. Arnzen picked up 34 of the 72 yards including the final 1 for the touchdown. Jake Bruner passed to Isaiah Shears for the 2-point to put Prairie up 8-0. Apparently Arnzen got hurt during the drive as never carried the ball again the rest of the game although he was able to stay in on defense. On Troy’s next possession the Trojans picked up a first down on a fake punt pass play but Prairie stiffened after that and forced a turnover on downs at the Prairie 33. Prairie went to the pass on 4 of the 5 plays of the ensuing drive with Bruner finding Mason Dalgliesh wide open at the 5 yard line for a 36 yard scoring play. The 2-point try failed but Prairie led 14-0 with 1:03 left in the first quarter. Troy picked up a couple of first downs but a sack of quarterback Chase Blazzard by Arnzen led to a punt. Prairie took over on their own 14 and appeared to score in just 4 plays as Hunter McWilliams went 59 yards for an apparent score but a holding penalty called it back. McWilliams would get several more opportunities to score later. Prairie went on to score anyway 4 plays later with Bruner keeping the ball on the option and going 29 yards for the score. McWilliams added the 2-pointer to make it 22-0. For Troy it was 3 plays and punt again with the ball rolling dead at the Prairie 15. After an incomplete pass, McWilliams took a pitch around left end and raced down the sidelines. Troy’s Jonah Lay appeared to have him lined up for a tackle at the 30 but McWilliams made a great cutback move and went the rest of the way for an 85 yard scoring play. Again there was a penalty but this time it was on Troy’s coach who apparently thought the officials had missed a Prairie penalty. Dalgliesh added the 2-pointer to make it 30-0. The penalty was enforced on the kickoff and Terran Peery was able to kick the ball down to the 3. Troy returned to the 17 and picked up a couple of first downs thanks to penalties on the Pirates defense. Troy’s Kellen Hoskins then had a big run called back on a holding penalty. After a pair of incomplete passes Troy tried a halfback throwback where Hoskins took a handoff to the right and then threw back to the left to Blazzard. Prairie had the play smelled out though as Dalgliesh had Blazzard covered and tipped the pass with Peery making the interception at the 41 and returning it to the 29. Prairie needed just 1 play to score again as McWilliams went 29 yards for his second touchdown of the game. Bruner passed to Calvin Hinkelman for the 2-pointer to make it 38-0. On Troy’s next possession the Trojans finally put up a score thanks to a 43 yard pass to Hoskins. 2 plays later Blazzard scored from the 13 and then passed to Hoskins for the 2-pointer to make it 38-8. A holding penalty against Prairie on the 2-point try enabled Troy to kick off from the 50 but Hinkelman was able to cover the onside kick attempt at the Prairie 33. A holding penalty wiped out a big gainer by Shears on an end around and forced Prairie to eventually turn the ball over on downs at their own 36. With a little better clock management they should have been able to run out the half but wound up giving Troy the ball with 7 seconds left. Troy almost made the Pirates pay for it as Blazzard passed deep to Lay but Rhett Schlader made a saving tackle at the 1 yard line as the half ran out. Prairie received the second half kickoff with Hinkelman picking up the short kick at the 41 and returning it to the Troy 40. On the first play from scrimmage McWilliams went around right end and cut back to the left and was gone for a 40 yard touchdown, his third of the game. The 2-point try failed lead Prairie with a 44-8 lead. Troy threatened to score on their first possession of the second half as a fourth down pas that went for 35 yards put them on the Prairie 27. After a 13 yard gain put them at the 14 a pass interference penalty against Prairie gave Troy a first and goal at the 7. On the next play Peery ripped the ball loose from Troy’s David Blum and Shears recovered at the 7. Prairie flipped the field, thanks to pass receptions by McWilliams that gained 15 and 42 yards as they took the ball to the Troy 13. On a third and 6 play at that point a handoff got botched and Troy wound up recovering the fumble at their own 9. The Trojans picked up a first down and came up just short of another as they turned the ball over on downs at their own 27. After a 7 yard gain by McWilliams, Bruner found Schlader open over the middle for a 20 yard touchdown pass. Hinkelman ran in the 2-point to make it 52-8. Troy again turned the ball over on downs, this time at their own 48. McWilliams gained 8 yards and Hinkelman 6 to move the ball to the 34. On the next play Bruner rolled out to the right and found Schlader open deep down the field for a 34 yard scoring play. The 2-point try failed leaving Prairie with a 58-8 lead with 9:34 left. Last year the game would have been over at that point but this time it just started the running clock. Troy again came up short on fourth down at their own 24 and 4 plays later McWilliams went in from the 9 for his fourth touchdown and Prairie had broken the 60 point barrier for the sixth straight time this season. Prairie put the subs in on defense and Troy was able to move the ball down to the 10 but time ran out on them. The Pirates wound up with 574 yards of offense with 342 yards rushing on 33 attempts and 232 more passing on 14 completions. McWilliams gained 237 yards rushing on just 14 attempts. Bruner had 42 yards on 4 carries, Arnzen 34 on 8 carries and Hinkelman 33 on 5 carries. Bruner was 14 for 20 passing for 232 yards. McWilliams caught 4 passes for 83 yards. Schlader had 4 for 69. Hinkelman had 3 for 22, Dalgliesh 2 for 38 and Shears 1 for 20. Troy had 289 yards of offense, 122 rushing on 35 attempts and 167 passing. Hoskins had 57 yards on 14 rushing attempts while Blazzard was 9 for 26 for 167 yards. Hoskins was 0 for 1 with an interception. Peery led the defense with 9 tackles and an interception. Shears had 7½ tackles. Bruner had 5½, Devin Bruegeman 4, Schlader 3, Arnzen 2½ including a sack, Tanner Ross 2, John Mager and McWilliams 1½ each and Dalgliesh, Brandon Higgins and Jayce Huling 1 each. With the win Prairie improves to 6-0 on the season and 4-0 in league play. They have also clinched a state playoff berth as there will be 4 teams from the White Pine League making the playoffs this season. Their next game will be at Potlatch this Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. Troy 0 8 0 0 - 8 Prairie 14 24 14 12 -64 P-Arnzen 1 run (Shears pass from Bruner) 5:32 1st P-Dalgliesh 36 pass from Bruner (run failed) 1:03 1st P-Bruner 29 run (McWilliams run) 6:40 2nd P-McWilliams 85 run (Dalgliesh run) 5:06 2nd P-McWilliams 29 run (Hinkelman pass from Bruner) 2:22 2nd T-Blazzard 13 run (Hoskins pass from Blazzard) 1:11 2nd P-McWilliams 40 run (pass failed) 11:42 3rd P-Schlader 20 pass from Bruner (Hinkelman run) 1:39 3rd P-Schlader 34 pass from Bruner (run failed) 9:34 4th P-McWilliams 9 run (pass failed) 3:53 4th
