Lady
Pirates beat Potlatch, Genesee
The Prairie Lady Pirates won a pair of home league matches last week, sweeping Potlatch in 3 games Tuesday, Oct. 7 and then outlasting Genesee in 5 games on senior night, Thursday, Oct. 9. The first game didn’t start well for Prairie as they fell behind 1-7. At that point Potlatch bricked a serve and Kayla Schumacher took over at the service line. 11 points later Potlatch finally scored a sideout. Krystin Uhlenkott and Holli Uhlorn dominated at the net during that run as Uhlorn had 2 stuff blocks plus a kill while Uhlenkott had 4 kills. Natasha Gimmeson added a kill and Schumacher had 2 aces. Potlatch was able to rally back within 2 at 15-13 before bricking another serve. That sent Shayla VonBargen to the service line and she had one of her best service runs of the season with 5 jump serve aces in a 7-point run that included a kill each by Uhlorn and Uhlenkott. VonBargen finally missed a serve long for the sideout but a kill each by Uhlorn and Schumacher gave Prairie a 25-14 win. In the second game it was Gimmeson who broke open a close game with a big service run. She had 4 jump serve aces in an 7 point run with VonBargen scoring a pair of kills and Uhlenkott adding a pretty cut shot down the net as Prairie took a 14-4 lead. VonBargen and Hailey Danly each added 4-point service runs as Prairie pulled away for a 15-point win. In the third game Schumacher had a 5-point run that gave Prairie an 8-1 lead and the Loggers never got closer than 5 points the rest of the way as Prairie completed the sweep. Uhlenkott had 17 kills in the match while VonBargen had 10 kills including 2 stuff blocks plus 8 aces. She was the server for 15 points. Uhlorn had 10 kills including 3 stuffs. Schumacher had 7 kills and 4 aces and was the server for 16 points. Danly had 4 kills, 4 aces and 23 assists. Gimmeson had 2 kills, 5 aces and 18 assists. The JV team also swept the Loggers winning 25-18, 25-22, 15-11. In the first game Prairie started slowly but took their first lead when Sierra Latimer served 4 straight points with 2 aces plus a kill each by Darlene Gehring and Mykaela McWilliams which made it 7-5. Potlatch took the lead back but Prairie took the lead for good on a kill by Latimer that made it 14-13. From that point on Prairie was able to score 2 or 3 points on serve while siding out all but one of Potlatch’s serves as they went on to win by 7. In the second game Prairie jumped out to a 4-0 with Angela Wemhoff serving and led by as many as 6 at 12-6 before Potlatch mounted a comeback. The Loggers came back to take a 16-18 lead only to see Prairie score the next 3 points to retake the lead. Potlatch was able to tie the score at 19 and again at 22 before bricking a serve. That put Leah Higgins on the service line where she served up 2 aces to clinch the match. Potlatch took the early in the in the third game but Wemhoff had a 5 point service run with 4 aces plus a kill by Josie Peery that put Prairie ahead 9-6. Potlatch came back to take a 10-11 lead but another kill by Peery tied it and Peery then served up 4 straight aces to finish the match. Senior Schumacher had 16 kills to lead the Pirates offensively while Uhlenkott had 14 kills and 28 digs. VonBargen had 10 kills and 7 stuffs while Uhlorn had 6 stuffs. Coach Cheyenne Hudson said she felt the blocking at the net was a key factor in the win. Seniors along with Schumacher playing in their final home match included Gimmeson, Uhlorn and Kellie Heitman. Prairie also won the JV match but lost in the C match. Prairie is now 9-2 in league and 16-3 overall with one regular season match left to play. Also of note, just like last season they completed their home schedule without a loss.
Prairie wound up the regular season in a 3-way tie for first, just like last year. This year however athletic director Travis Mader had a luckier draw in the tiebreaker as Prairie will be the #1 seed into the District Tournament. As the #1 seed they get a bye past Saturday's action and will play the Lapwai-C.V. winner on Monday, Oct. 20 at 4 p.m. at the LCSC Activity Center. The winner of that match earns a trip to State and will play again at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22 in the District Championship match. The loser plays at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in a loser-out match. The winners of Tuesday two loser-out matches will play Wednesday at 6 p.m. for third place. That winner would travel to Wallace on Thursday, Oct. 23, for a play-in match with the winner of that match traveling to either Grangeville (if Wallace wins) or Cascade (if the White Pine team wins) for another play-in match for a state berth.
