win big at Potlatch
The Prairie football team gave up a few big plays on defense but otherwise continued their romp through the season with a 72-18 win at Potlatch Friday, Oct. 17. Potlatch received the opening kickoff but that possession ended early when Jake Bruner intercepted a deep third down pass at the Prairie 30. 
On third down and 7, Hunter McWilliams broke loose for a 47 yard run that put Prairie on the Potlatch 20. On the next play Bruner connected with Isaiah Shears on a pass over the middle for the touchdown. Bruner ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0 less than 90 seconds into the game. Potlatch’s next possession ended with a bad snap to the punter that gave Prairie the ball at the Potlatch 18 yard line. 4 plays later Bruner went around left end from the 4 for the touchdown. Bruner then passed to Rhett Schlader for the 2-pointer to make it 16-0. Potlatch again was forced to punt with Prairie taking over at the Potlatch 48. Bruner connected with Calvin Hinkelman on a short pass to the left side and Hinkelman went 40 yards to set up first and goal at the 8. Two plays later Bruner passed to a wide open Schlader in the end zone for a 5-yard scoring play. The two point try came up short but Prairie had a 22-0 lead. Potlatch finally picked up a first down on a long pass where the Prairie defender slipped trying to make the play. The pass went for 40 yards to the Prairie 30. The defense clamped down there and Potlatch turned the ball over on downs at the Prairie 28. Prairie needed only 1 play to score as Bruner passed deep down the right side to Shears who outran the defender for a 72 yard touchdown. The 2-point try again came up short as Prairie led 28-0. Prairie got the ball right back as Mason Dalgliesh recovered Terran Peery’s squib kick at the Logger 38. Peery then picked up 25 yards on a burst through the middle and a facemask penalty added another 6 yards to set up first and goal at the 7. Hinkelman picked up 2 yards then Bruner misfired 3 straight times on passes and Potlatch took over at the 5. On Potlatch’s first play following the change of possession Prairie had just 7 defenders on the field and that may have helped Potlatch’s Rowdy Paul get loose for a 95 yard touchdown run. Prairie stopped Potlatch’s 2-point try making it 28-6. Potlatch tried an onside kick and wound up recovering the ball but it only went 7 yards so Prairie took over at the Potlatch 47. A pass interference penalty moved the ball to the 32. Bruner got sacked for a 9 yard loss on the next play but McWilliams then took a pitch around left end for 33 yards to the 4 yard line. McWilliams scored on the next play and added the 2-pointer to make it 36-6. On Potlatch’s first play following the kickoff Schlader stripped the ball from Potlatch’s Tristan Hites and Shears recovered the fumble at the Logger 31. Peery picked up 11 yards on the first play and Hinkelman finished off the drive with a 20 yard run for the touchdown. Peery added the 2 pointer to make it 44-6 with 53 seconds still left in the first quarter! Potlatch was called for a personal foul on the touchdown with the penalty assessed on the kickoff. Even though Peery kicked from the Potlatch 45, when the ball went out of bounds inside the 10, Potlatch still got the ball at their 35. Apparently the rulebook says it goes to the 35 no matter where the ball is kicked off from. Potlatch picked up a first down but then turned the ball over on downs at the Prairie 41. Prairie ran the ball on 6 straight plays with 3 of those runs gaining at least 13 yards as they moved down to another score. Dalgliesh went over the right side for the final 17 yards and the touchdown. The 2-point try failed leaving Prairie up 50-6. After another squibbed kickoff Potlatch took over on their own 35. The Loggers had another 1 play touchdown drive as Jensen Daily got behind the defense over the middle and quarterback David Amos lofted a perfect pass that Daily took 65 yards for a score. The 2-point try again failed making it 50-12. Potlatch tried another onside kick but this time Peery grabbed it on the bounce at the Prairie 44 and returned it to the Potlatch 18. After two incomplete passes, Hinkelman burst through the middle for 18 yards and another Prairie touchdown. Bruner passed to Shears for the 2-pointer to make it 58-12.  Potlatch
was forced to punt with Prairie taking over at the Logger 47 after a 13
yard return by Schlader.
Two personal foul penalties against the Loggers helped Prairie move downfield for another touchdown. Bruner hit Schlader over the middle from 3 yards out for the score. The two point pass failed but Prairie led 64-12 with 3:14 left in the half. The half ran out as Potlatch got to midfield. Prairie received the second half kickoff taking over at their own 30. With a running clock for the entire second half, Devin Bruegeman was put in at quarterback and picked up 11 yards on a first down keeper. McWilliams picked up 9 to move the ball to the 50 and on the next play McWilliams burst through the middle for a 50-yard romp to the end zone. Peery ran in the 2-pointer to make it 72-12 for Prairie’s highest scoring output of the season. Subs played the rest of the half for Prairie and gave up a fourth quarter touchdown to Potlatch to cut the final margin to 72-18. Otherwise it was just try to get through the second half without anyone getting hurt. For the second straight game McWilliams went over 200 yards rushing with 204 yards on 12 carries. Peery added 74 yards on 8 carries as he filled in at running back for an injured Lucas Arnzen who expects to be back for the Kamiah game. Hinkelman added 60 yards on 6 carries as Prairie rolled up 368 yards rushing on 36 attempts. Bruner completed 6 of 12 passes for 148 yards while Bruegeman was 2 for 2 for 11 yards. Shears had 2 catches for 92 yards and 2 touchdown. Hinkelman had 2 for 48, Tanner Ross 1 for 11, Dalgliesh 1 for 5, Schlader 1 for 3 and Brandon Higgins 1 catch for 0 yards. Potlatch had 306 total yards compared to Prairie’s 527. Paul had 143 yards rushing on 10 attempts. Amos was 4 for 14 with an interception for 142 yards. Hinkelman led the defense with 8½ tackles. Dalgiesh had 5½. Peery had 4½. Bruner had 3½ plus an interception. Ross had 3½. Bruegeman, Schlader and Shears had 2½ each. Dally Ratcliff had 2. John Mager and McWilliams had 1½ each and Bobby Hood had 1 tackle. Prairie is now 7-0 on the season and 5-0 in league play and have clinched no worse than a tie for first place. Their next game is against Kamiah this Friday night at 7 p.m. at Cottonwood. This will also be Senior Night. With a win Prairie would clinch the White Pine League championship and play Wallace Thursday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. at Cottonwood in a first round State playoff game. If Kamiah should win it could create a 3-way tie for first between Prairie, Troy and Kamiah and there would be a coin toss on Saturday to determine the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place seeds into the state tournament. Genesee has the 4th seed pretty well locked up.
