Scouting for Food
By Carson Schmidt
Every November Boy Scouts across America Scout for Food. Scouting for Food is an on-going annual program of the Boy Scouts of America which began in 1985 by the Greater Saint Louis Area Council. It is organized at the local level throughout the country. Community service projects are an important part of scouting as scouts promise “to do a good turn daily.”
Local Boy Scout Troop 638 delivered plastic bags for food donations door to door throughout Cottonwood on Saturday, November 1. The adults helping to deliver bags were Dan Karel, Shari Chaffee, and Rhonda Schmidt, with scouts Anthony Karel, Hunter Chaffee, and Carson Schmidt.
On the following Saturday, November 8th over 700 pounds of food was collected from the community and delivered to the Cottonwood Food Bank. Scouts helping out were Hunter Chaffee, Anthony Karel, Carson Schmidt, Tate Berdoy, Blaze Berdoy, and Kevin Tillinghast with adults Shari Chaffee, Dan Karel, Rhonda Schmidt, and Brad Berdoy.

On November 7, Troop 638 held their food drive. See story below. Shown from left are Shari Chaffee, Blaze Berdoy, Hunter Chaffee, Kevin Tillinghast, Carson Schmidt, Rhonda Schmidt, Brad Berdoy, Anthony Karel and Dan Karel. Photo provided by Shari Chaffee.

On November 8 Boy Scout Troop 638 held a Court of Honor for four Boy Scouts receiving their Life Rank advancement. Only having less than a handful of Eagle required badges left, plus organizing an Eagle project. These boys have worked very hard to get to this point in their lives. Please continue to encourage these young men to persevere. Receiving Life Advancement are Anthony Karel, far right, Carson Schmidt, middle, Hunter Chaffee, 2nd from right and Tate Berdoy, second from left. Older scout Blaze Berdoy, far left, is currently putting the final touches on his Eagle Scout proposal. Carson received his Citizenship in the world Merit Badge. Kevin Tillinghast, not shown, received his Camping Merit Badge and all the boys received a badge for Drug Free Awareness. Thank you to the community for all your support and to the parents of these boys for always being there for them. Photo by Shari Chaffee.
