Pirates edge Moscow
Kayla Schumacher connected on a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left to break a tie and give Prairie a 42-40 win over Moscow Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Cottonwood. Just 14 seconds earlier Krystin Uhlenkott had tied the score with a 3-pointer from the left corner, Prairie’s only 3-point field goal of the game. It was a game of surges as one team would score several points in a row and then the other would come back with their own run. Prairie opened the game with an 8-0 flurry fueled by their defense. Schumacher opened the scoring with a pair of free throws after she was fouled on a putback attempt. A steal by Hailey Danly led to a layup by Uhlenkott. Danly then scored a basket and a steal by Shayla VonBargen led to a basket by Schumacher for the 8-0 lead. Moscow then rallied back to within 1 at 10-9 but Prairie ended the quarter with a 5-0 run on 2 putbacks by Schumacher bracketing a free throw by Uhlenkott. In the second quarter it was Moscow forcing the turnovers as they took their first lead after a quarter-opening 0-7 run. Schumacher broke the dry spell with a nice finger roll that hit the hoop and rolled up and in. She then added a pair of free throws to make it 19-16. Moscow ended the half with a 2-7 run where Danly’s running 1-hander off the glass was Prairie’s only points as the Bears led 21-23 at the half. The third quarter saw Prairie tie the score twice at 23 and again at 25 only to see Moscow finish the quarter with a 0-5 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 25-30. Prairie opened the fourth with an 8-0 run with Schumacher scoring 6 of those points and Chaye Uptmor adding the other 2 on a steal and lay-up. Moscow got back within 1 at 34-33 when Uhlenkott stole the ball and was fouled, converting a 3-point play for a 37-33 lead with 2:49 left. Moscow answered with their only 3-pointer of the game and then added a basket and 2 free throws to take a 37-40 lead with 48 seconds left. That set up the game-ending run by the Pirates as Prairie worked the ball around for Uhlenkott’s open look for 3. Moscow looked to run the clock down for a game-winning shot attempt but Schumacher stole the ball and was fouled with 11 seconds left. She converted both ends of the 1 and 1 for the win as Moscow’s final shot attempt missed. Schumacher wound up with 23 points to lead the scoring with Uhlenkott adding 9, Danly 6 and Angela Wemhoff and Uptmor 2 each. Schumacher had a double-double as she added 12 rebounds. VonBargen also had 12 rebounds as Prairie held a 45-22 advantage on the boards. Schumacher added 6 steals while Uhlenkott had 4. Danly had 4 assists. Prairie was 16 for 50 from the field, 32%, and 9 for 17 at the line, 53%. Moscow as 16 for 43 from the field, 37%, and 7 for 12 at the line, 58%. With the win Prairie improves to 3-0 on the season. In the JV game Prairie had a 5 point lead with 5:11 to play but never scored another point as Moscow rallied for a 39-43 win. Prairie jumped out to a 6-0 lead with Ally Sonnen scoring the opening basket and Kylie Tidwell the next 2 baskets. Talyss Lustig later added a pair of baskets for a 10-5 lead. Prairie led 10-7 after 1 quarter. Moscow scored the first 9 points of the second quarter to take their first lead of the game but Prairie responded with an 8-0 run to finish the half and take an 18-16 lead at the break. Selena Davila scored to break Moscow’s run with Tidwell adding a 16 foot jumper and then a 3-pointer to put Prairie back into the lead. Davila added a free throw to finish the first half scoring. Sierra Latimer opened the second half scoring and scored 8 of Prairie’s 17 third quarter points to help Prairie take a 35-30 lead into the fourth period. Leah Higgins added a pair of baskets. In the fourth quarter Lustig scored on a putback and Sydney Bruner added a basket on an inbounds play to put Priarie up 39-34 with 5:17 left but Prairie wasn’t able to score after that. Moscow finished the game with a 0-9 run. Tidwell scored 9 to lead the JV’s with Lustig and Latimer adding 8 points each. Higgins and Sonnen scored 4 each while Bruner and Davila scored 3 each. Prairie held a slim 43-41 rebounding edge with Bruner grabbing 11 to lead the team. Lustig added 9 rebounds and Sonnen 7. Tidwell had 5 steals and 4 assists while Higgins led the team with 6 assists.
