Football awards were handed out last Wednesday, Dec. 3. JV and varsity plaque winners are shown. 22 turned out for PHS boys basketball
There are 22 turned out for the Prairie boys basketball team this season although one of those is already out for the season with a knee injury.
Returning starters from the 2014 1A, Division 1 state basketball champions are seniors Rhett Schlader, Lucas Arnzen and Tanner Ross and junior Jake Bruner. With 4 of 5 starters back you’d have to think Prairie has a good chance of at least getting back to state if not winning it again.
Senior Bryson Higgins is the likely fifth starter replacing his cousin Jared Higgins, who graduated last spring.
Junior Isaiah Shears would likely have seen a lot of playing time but a knee injury in the Oakley football game will have him looking forward to his senior season.
Seniors Mason Dalgliesh and John Mager saw limited action last year, spending most of their time with the JV’s as did juniors Terran Peery and Calvin Hinkelman.
Other juniors up from the JV squad are Brandon Higgins, Justin Schumacher and Devin Bruegeman.
Those last three will serve as swing players this season as they will also be on the JV squad.
Other JV players are junior Hunter Hasselstrom, a transfer from Highland, sophomores Tyson Schlader, Brandon Anderson, Ryan Glimp, Lucas Wemhoff and Noah Arnzen. Arnzen is a transfer from Summit Academy.
Rounding out the JV squad are freshmen Hunter Chaffee, Anthony Karel and Nick Mager.
The coaching staff all return from last year with Teel Bruner as head coach and Kevin Chaffee, Scot Schlader and Pat Holthaus as assistants.
Lapwai has to be as Prairie’s top threat in the league this year although they have a new coach. Genesee will be a contender because they always are although they lost their leading scorer from last season. Kamiah should be improved as they had a very young squad last year. Troy lost quite a bit to graduation. Potlatch could be improved and C.V. looks like they will struggle with a very young team and a new coach.
State qualifying will be just like it was for volleyball with the top 2 at district advancing to state while the third place team will face a pair of play-in games.
The Pirates got into action this past Tuesday at Moscow and will be at the Idaho County Shootout this Friday at Grangeville. Their first league game will be at Troy next Tuesday, Dec. 16 with their first home game set for Friday, Dec. 18 against Kamiah.
