Jake Bruner was named the 1-A football player of the year by the Idaho Statesman in their Dec. 14 edition with several other Pirates named to theaall-state team. For the all-state team 1-A Divisions 1 and 2 were combined. Making the first team on offense were Hunter McWilliams at running back; Rhett Schlader at wide receiver and John Mager on the offensive line. Isaiah Shears was named to the second team on offense at wide receiver. Making the first team on defense were Shears and Lucas Arnzen as defensive linemen, Calvin Hinkelman at linebacker and Mason Dalgliesh at defensive back. Pirates win twice on the road The defending state champion Prairie boys basketball team opened their season with a pair of road wins, winning 67-43 at Moscow Tuesday, Dec. 9, then enduring a foul-filled contest to pull out a 70-62 win at Grangeville Friday, Dec. 12 at the Idaho County Shootout. Lucas Arnzen and Rhett Schlader, who finished the football season battling shoulder injuries showed no ill effects as they combined for 18 of Prairie’s 22 first quarter points. Arnzen connected on 5 of 6 shots in the quarter and Schlader 3 of 4 including two 3-pointers as Prairie took a 22-13 lead. Moscow had kept it close and trailed by just 2 at 13-11 after Jack Akey hit a 3-pointer but Prairie then answered with a 3 from Schlader that kicked of a 9-0 run. Moscow scored to open the second period but would add just 2 free throws the rest of the half as Prairie outscored them 18-4 to take a 40-17 halftime lead. Jake Bruner scored 9 of Prairie’s 18 second quarter points. Moscow never got any closer than 16 in the second half and that was in the fourth quarter against the reserves. Schlader wound up with 20 points to lead 4 players in double figures. Bruner scored 15, Arnzen 14 and Bryson Higgins, the one new starter this year, 12. Terran Peery added 4 points and Tanner Ross 2. Bruner had a double-double with 11 rebounds to lead Prairie to a 37-26 advantage on the boards. Schlader had 4 steals while Bruner and Higgins added 3 each. Bruner had 8 assists while Schlader had 5. Prairie was 27 for 57 from the field, 47%, and 9 for 14 at the line, 64%. Moscow was 14 for 47 from the field, 30%, and 11 for 14 at the line, 79%. Prairie lost both the JV and C games. The JV game was close until the final 4 minutes as it was tied at 12 after 1 quarter. Prairie led 29-28 at the half and it was tied at 37-37 after 3 quarters. With 4:12 left in the fame Brandon Higgins scored to tie the game at 42-42 but that was the last Prairie would score as they fell 42-48. Tyson Schlader scored 13 to lead the team with Brandon Anderson scoring 11, Lucas Wemhoff 8, Higgins 6, Hunter Chaffee 3 and Devin Bruegeman 1. Prairie was 12 for 40 from the field, 30% and 15 for 29 at the line, 52%. Moscow was 19 for 41 from the field, 46%, and 8 for 13 at the line, 62%. Prairie lost the C game 38-45. Prairie got hit harder with the disqualifications as all 3 were starters while only one of Grangeville’s was. Grangeville came out strong as they jumped to a 0-6 lead but Prairie then outscored the Bulldogs 19-4 the rest of the first quarter to take a 19-10 lead. Bruner and Schlader each scored 7 for the Pirates in that run. Each team had their runs in the second quarter with Grangeville opening the period with a 1-7 run that cut the lead to 3 points. Bryson Higgins then scored 4 of the next 6 points with Bruner adding a jump hook to push the lead back to 9 at 26-17. Grangeville twice got the deficit down to 6 but then Peery connected on a pair of huge 3-pointers that helped Prairie take an 8-point halftime lead at 35-27. In the third quarter Grangeville was able to whittle away at the lead, getting it down to 3 at 45-42 and again at 47-44. Schlader got fouled with 6 seconds left on a 3-point shot and made all three free throws to give Prairie a 50-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Prairie was able to hold Grangeville off through the fourth despite losing Schlader, Bruner and then Ross to fouls. Bruner scored 4 big lay-ups that helped Prairie keep Grangeville from getting any closer than 4 points in the quarter. When Bruner left with his fifth foul at the 2:10 mark Prairie led 62-57. Bryson Higgins scored to push the lead to 7. Grangeville scored a free throw when Ross fouled out and then a basket to cut the lead to 65-60 with 1:30 left. Higgins hit 4 of 4 free throws in the final minute and Hinkelman was 2 for 2 to help Prairie hold on for the win. Bruner wound up with 24 points to lead Prairie in scoring with Schlader adding 17 and Higgins 12. Peery scored 6, Arnzen 4, Ross 3, Hinkelman 2 and John Mager 1. Prairie dominated on the boards 47-30. Arnzen had an off night scoring but made up for it with 14 rebounds. Bruner added 12 and Schlader 8. Arnzen, Higgins and Bruner had 2 steals each and Bruner led in assists with 6. Prairie was 24 for 52 from the field, 46%, and 19 for 38 at the line, 50%. Grangeville was 21 for 50 from the field, 42%, and 13 for 30 at the line, 43%. Grangeville was just 2 for 13 in the fourth quarter at the line while Prairie was 8 for 17.
