Pirates win 2 of 3
The Prairie Lady Pirates won 2 of 3 games this past week, losing at Lapwai 44-49 on Thursday, Dec. 11, then winning at Grangeville 40-37 Friday, Dec. 12 and over Kamiah at Cottonwood, 61-7, Monday, Dec. 15. Lapwai however rallied to win, outscoring the Pirates 11-19 in the final frame to pull out the win. The game was tight the whole way as the score was tied 8-8 after one quarter and 22-22 at the half. Prairie outscored Lapwai 11-8 in the third to take their lead. Offensively Kayla Schumacher kept her team close as she poured in a season-high 25 points which included three 3-pointers. Hailey Danly added 7 points with Angela Wemhoff, Shayla VonBargen and Krystin Uhlenkott scoring 4 each. Prairie managed to win the JV game 57-46, helped greatly by foul trouble against Lapwai. Due to fouls, Lapwai had just 3 players on the floor at the end. Prairie led nearly the whole game but could never put the game away. Prairie took an early 5-2 lead but a rare 4-point play gave Grangeville a 5-6 lead. Prairie took back the lead on a basket by Natasha Gimmeson, who was in the game because Wemhoff picked up 2 quick fouls. Grangeville briefly took the lead back before Schumacher kicked off a 13-0 run with a lay-up. Danly scored on a drive and Schumacher added 2 more baskets to make it 15-8 at the quarter break. Danly scored to open the second quarter scoring and then the defenses took over. It was nearly 3 minutes until Uhlenkott scored a pair of free throws and then VonBargen scored inside. Grangeville scored their first points of the quarter at the 2:12 mark to end Prairie’s run. VonBargen scored on a full court drive after rebounding a Grangeville shot that was blocked by Uhlenkott. Josie Peery added a free throw to make it 22-10. Grangeville added a late basket to make it 22-12 at the half and it looked like Prairie might cruise to an easy win. Grangeville came out strong in the third quarter though with a 2-10 run that cut the lead to just 2 points at 24-22. Schumacher scored her first points since the first quarter on an inbounds play but Grangeville answered with a pair of 3-pointers that gave them their first lead since the 3:36 mark of the first quarter. A putback by Schumacher tied it and Danly hit a runner that put Prairie back on top 30-28 at the end of the third quarter. A steal by Uhlenkott led to her scoring a lay-up and Schumacher scored inside to put Prairie up 34-28 90 seconds into the fourth quarter. After 2 Grangeville free throws Schumacher scored a basket and a free throw and Uhlenkott added a basket to push the lead to 9 at 39-30 with 3:25 left. Grangeville answered with a 3-pointer and a basket to cut the lead to 4 with 1:40 left. Prairie looked to run clock and Danly, who had struggled at the line, was fouled with 12 seconds to play. She made the first of the 1 and 1 to make it a 5 point lead. Grangeville scored just before the buzzer to cut the final margin to 3 points. Schumacher scored 15 to lead Prairie in scoring. Danly and VonBargen scored 7 each with Uhlenkott scoring 6, Wemhoff and Gimmeson 2 each and Peery 1. Prairie had a 39-30 edge on the boards with Danly leading Prairie with 12. VonBargen, Schumacher and Uhlenkott added 7 each. VonBargen and Uhlenkott had 5 steals each with Danly adding 4. Danly had 3 assists. Prairie was 15 for 35 from the field, 43%, and 10 for 24 at the line, 42%. Grangeville was 14 for 50 from the field, 28%, and 5 for 8 at the line, 63%. Prairie coach Lori Mader started sending in reserves early as the starting 5 scored 12 points in the first quarter and subs added 11 points. The Kubs scored 3 times in the second quarter for a total of 5 points but Prairie still outscored them 16-5 to take a 39-5 halftime lead. Kamiah mustered just a pair of free throws in the second half as the onslaught continued with Prairie taking a 58-7 lead into the fourth quarter. Under a running clock Prairie added just 3 more points in the fourth as they were content to just get the game over with. Schumacher led a balanced scoring effort with 12 points with VonBargen and Uhlenkott adding 10 each. Wemhoff scored 9, Danly 7, Peery 4, Gimmeson 3 and Chaye Uptmor, Kylie Tidwell and Sarah Seubert 2 each. VonBargen had a double-double as she led Prairie to a 46-27 domination on the boards with 13 rebounds. Uhlenkott had 5 steals while Danly and Schumacher had 4 each. Uhlenkott also led with 4 assists while Schumacher had 3. Prairie was 27 for 65 from the field, 42%, and 7 for 13 at the line, 54%. Kamiah was 2 for 30 from the field, 7%, and 3 for 4 at the line, 75%. Prairie is now 8-1 overall and 4-1 in league play. Prairie won a 2-quarter JV game 18-8.
