Pirates beat Lapwai, C.V.
The Prairie Pirates kept their league record unblemished with a pair of league wins this past week. On Tuesday, Jan. 6 they came from behind to knock off Lapwai 50-33 at Cottonwood and on Friday, Jan. 9 they traveled to Kooskia where they beat C.V. 78-36.
Vs. Lapwai
On Tuesday against Lapwai Prairie jumped out to a 7-4 lead on the Wildcats and then their shooting touch disappeared.Tanner Ross and Lucas Arnzen defend against Lapwai as Bryson Higgins looks on from the left.
At the 6:42 mark of the first quarter Lucas Arnzen scored to put Prairie up 7-4 and then the Pirates went scoreless the rest of the quarter and wound up connecting on just 3 of 17 attempts. Lapwai meanwhile finished the quarter with a 0-11 run to take a 7-15 lead into the second quarter.
Jake Bruner opened the second quarter scoring with a pair of baskets to cut the lead to 4 at 11-15 but Prairie scored just 6 the rest of the period as Lapwai took a 17-25 lead.
Rhett Schlader was especially ice-cold as he missed 10 straight shots after opening the game with a driving lay-up. 
He finally broke the streak with a driving lay-up with 1:20 left in the half and added a pair of free throws with 43 seconds left.
Prairie had hit just 7 of 29 first half shots, 24% while Lapwai was 11 for 26, 42%.
The second half was like a totally different game as the Pirates amped up the defense and found their shooting touch.
Schlader was 5 for 7 from the field in the second half and the team was 11 for 20.
Prairie still trailed Lapwai 25-32 with 3:05 left after Cameron Shawl hit a 3-pointer. From that point on though Lapwai went ice cold as they scored just 1 more point in the final 11 minutes. 
Prairie meanwhile scored the next 15 straight points to take their first lead since early in the first quarter.
A 3 by Schlader cut the lead to 4. Arnzen scored inside to pull Prairie within 2 at 30-32 and Bruner scored on a driving lay-up to tie the game at 32-32 with 43 seconds left in the third quarter. A putback by Bruner gave Prairie the lead with 30 seconds left in the quarter and Schlader added a driving lay-up to make it 36-32 at the end of the quarter.
A lay-up by Arnzen and a 16 foot jumper by Schlader made it 40-32 with 5:38 left in the game.
Lapwai finally broke the run with a free throw with 4:48 left but would not score again as Prairie scored the game’s final 10 points with 8 of those coming at the free throw line.
Lapwai was just 3 for 20 from the field in the second half, 0 for 12 in the fourth quarter.
Bruner wound up with 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Pirates in both categories. Schlader wound up with 19 points while Arnzen scored 6 with 13 rebounds. Bryson Higgins and Tanner Ross scored 2 each and Terran Peery scored 1.
Prairie had a 44-32 edge on the boards, 23-14 in the second half.
Bruner had 6 steals and 3 assists while Schlader had 4 assists and 3 steals.

In the JV game Prairie jumped out to a 16-0 lead and went on to beat Lapwai 51-33.
Prairie went to full court pressure to start the game and forced 10 first quarter turnovers from the Wildcats. 
Hunter Chaffee scored 6 and Tyson Schlader, Brandon Anderson and Brandon Higgins 4 each as Prairie rolled to a 20-4 lead by the end of the first quarter.
The pace slowed down in the second quarter with each team scoring 7 as Prairie led 27-11 at the half. Chaffee added 5 more in the quarter with Luke Wemhoff adding the other 2 points.
Prairie scored the first 6 points of the third quarter to take a 33-11 lead. Lapwai then put together a rally as they outscored Prairie 3-12 the rest of the quarter. Chaffee’s 3 pointer were Prairie’s only points in that run.
Prairie scored the first 4 points of the fourth quarter and Lapwai never got any closer than 12 the rest of the way.
Lapwai got the lead down to 12 at 45-33 with 57 seconds left but from that point on their strategy of fouling and hoping Prairie would miss the free throws backfired as Prairie scored the game’s final 6 points on free throw.
Chaffee wound up with 18 points to lead the scoring with Higgins scoring 11, Anderson 10, Schlader and Devin Bruegeman 5 each and Wemhoff 2.
Prairie had a 37-35 edge on the boards led by Chaffee with 8 and Higgins with 7.
Higgins had 8 steals and 8 assists.
The JV’s were 18 for 56 from the field, 32%, and 13 for 21 at the line, 62%. Lapwai was 15 for 50 from the field, 30%, and had no free throw attempts as Prairie was whistled for just 7 fouls the entire game.

At C.V.
In the game at C.V. it took a bit to get things started as Arnzen scored the game’s first points on a putback nearly 3 minutes into the game. That got things going for the Pirates as they added 18 mores points in the next 3 minutes to take a 20-0 lead.John Mager and Rhett Schlader double team a C.V. ballhandler.
C.V. finally got on the board at the 1:30 mark with a 3-pointer from the only senior on their squad, Tyler Palmer.
Prairie added another 5 points to end the quarter with a 25-3 lead. Arnzen and Schlader each wound up with 8 points in the quarter.
Prairie scored the first 6 points of the second quarter with the highlight being a dunk by Jake Bruner who got a steal near the top of the key on the defensive end and took the ball all the way downcourt for the slam.
The Pirates continued to roll the rest of the half both on offense and defense as they built a 47-14 by halftime. Bryson Higgins had 5 points in the quarter with Bruner, Ross and Peery adding 4 each.
In the third quarter the starters were on the floor to start the half but reserves got the bulk of the playing time as Prairie continued to build on their lead taking a 67-29 advantage into the final period. 8 different Pirates scored at least 2 points in the quarter with nobody scoring more than 3 as Prairie spread the scoring load around.
With the fourth quarter under running clock mercy rules Prairie scored the first 9 points of the period then eased up as C.V. scored 7 straight before John Mager capped the scoring.
Schlader scored 14 with Bruner and Arnzen each adding 12. Higgins, Ross and Mager scored 8 each with Calvin Hinkelman adding 7, Peery 6 and Justin Schumacher 3.
Arnzen was a force on the boards with 13 rebounds to lead Prairie to a 45-32 advantage. Mager added 9 rebounds.
Higgins had 5 steals and Schlader had 5 assists. Higgins, Peery and Brandon Higgins each added 3 assists.
Prairie was 32 for 73 from the field, 44%, and 10 for 21 at the line, 48%. C.V. was 12 for 37 from the field, 32%, and 8 for 15 at the line, 53%. 
C.V. had 26 turnovers while Prairie had just 5, which may be a record low.
With the wins Prairie improves to 8-2 on the season and 5-0 in league play.
The JV team also had little trouble with the Rams leading 25-4 after one quarter on their way to a 60-21 win.
Prairie jumped on top 14-2 and then scored the final 11 points of the quarter for their lead. Tyson Schlader had a pair of 3-pointers and 8 points in the quarter while Hunter Chaffee scored 6.
After forcing 14 first quarter turnovers the JV’s backed off on the defensive pressure in the second quarter but still forced 8 turnovers as they built their lead to 38-12 by halftime. Anderson scored 6 of Prairie’s 13 second quarter points.
Prairie started the second half with an 8-0 run as they outscored C.V. 17-4 in the third quarter. Chaffee scored 8 in the quarter on 4 for 4 shooting. That gave Prairie a 55-16 lead after 3 quarters and led to a running clock in the fourth quarter.
Chaffee wound up with 14 points to lead the scoring with Schlader adding 12, Anderson 9, Luke Wemhoff 7, Brandon Higgins 5, Justin Schumacher and Anthony Karel 3 each, Ryan Glimp, Nick Mager  and Hunter Hasselstrom 2 each and Devin Bruegeman 1.
Prairie had a 32-30 edge on the boards with Schlader, Chaffee and Hasselstrom grabbing 4 each to lead the team.
Higgins had 6 steals with Anderson and Schlader adding 4 each. Higgins also led in assists with 4 with Schlader and Wemhoff adding 3 each.
The JV’s were 26 for 60 from the field, 43%, and 5 for 14 at the line, 36%. C.V. was 8 for 26 from the field, 31%, and 5 for 11 at the line, 45%.
