winners are named
Sydney Kuther of Nezperce High School took first place in the Daughters of the American Revolution 2015 Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest. Megan Seubert of Summit Academy in Cottonwood was awarded second place and Grangeville High School’s Kaleala Bass took third place. The contest is open to area high school seniors and is sponsored by the Alice Whitman chapter. Other area students writing essays were Dominique Hunter of Clearwater Valley Jr./Sr. High School; Emily McHugh of Prairie High School; Kiera Miller of Kamiah High School; Savannah LaForce of Potlatch High School and Samantha Vaughn of Orofino High School. Each of these students will receive a pin and certificate at the February chapter meeting. The winning essay will be entered in the Idaho State DAR contest and the state winner competes in the Western Region, whose winner goes to the National Society’s contest. A substantial scholarship is the reward for the national winner. Judging is based upon grades, school and community activities and an essay written by the student in a two-hour period without preparation. The students this year made some very thoughtful comments on the subject of “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It: What does our past tell us about our future?” |
