Health Workshop set for Ferdinand
A Soil Health Workshop is slated for Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at Ferdinand Assumption Parish Hall, 514 Maple Street, Ferdinand, ID. Registration will begin at 8:30 am with the program to begin at 9:00 a.m. Featured speaker will be Jay Fuhrer, a Conservationist employed by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), in Bismarck, North Dakota. He grew up on a small grain and livestock farm, Jay’s interests have always centered on agriculture. Jay emphasizes Soil Health as a foundation for cropping systems, grazing systems, cover crops, soil biology, pollinators, insects, wildlife, and quality of life; when working individually with farmers and ranchers. In addition, Jay uses cover crops and livestock integration to connect the cropping and grazing systems together, raising the Soil Health bar even higher. During the workshops morning session, Jay will talk on Soil Health – A landscape Overview “The Big Picture”. The afternoon session he will talk on Soil Health Principles - the carbon cycle and how plants function. Other workshop speakers include Marlon Winger, NRCS State Agronomist. His presentation will include demonstrations on soil stability and water infiltration. Also speaking on “How does soil function-zone of influence in soil”. Ken Hart, U of I Extension, Jim Church, U of I Extension, and Kevin Seitz, NRCS, will touch on the results from the Regional Approaches to Climate Change (REACCH) Project, cover crop grazing trials they have been undertaking for the past two years. Drew Leitch, Joe Chicane and Darrel Uhlorn will make up a producer perspective panel sharing their outcomes from using cover crops in their operations. Pesticide recertification credits and CCA credits have been applied for. Cost for the workshop will be $5.00 which includes a lunch served at noon. This educational workshop is hosted by the Lewis Soil Conservation District, Idaho Soil and Water Conservation District, and the Clearwater Soil and Water Conservation District.
