travels to National 4-H Congress

spent the day traveling and a week away from family to attend National
4-H Congress in Atlanta, Ga.
“It just didn’t seem like Thanksgiving since I was traveling,” Uhlorn shrugged. “The South was definitely different than Idaho.” Uhlorn was among 10 4-H members from across Idaho and more than 800 from across the nation who gathered for the annual conference in Georgia. She applied through the state office and was chosen for the honor based on her application, leadership and community skills. Uhlorn’s older sister and brother each took the trip to Georgia during high school, too, and she was glad to continue the tradition, she said. “It’s something I’ve known about forever and it was fun to finally be the one to go,” she said. Uhlorn was able to attend a variety of workshops including Zumba and a cooking class, meet with kids from 46 states and Puerto Rico and hone in on a community service project. “The service project I chose was to hand out meals in a run-down part of town. We bagged food and fed 200 families,” she said. “It was very humbling and really an eye-opener to me – a big realization to how fortunate I am.” Uhlorn said the experience “definitely did not feel like work. We had 50 or 60 people in our group and it was a great experience to help out in that way and to see all the people we fed.” Uhlorn is the daughter of Darrel and Mary Uhlorn and has been a member of the Indoor-Outdoor 4-H Club for the past decade. In 4-H she has participated in sewing, Making the Most of Me, beef, cooking, Know Your Government and embroidery projects. She has played volleyball and been a cheerleader at PHS. “As far as 4-H goes, it has really taught me a lot about responsibility as well as given me the opportunity to hone my social and leadership skills,” Uhlorn said. “I have enjoyed meeting new people through 4-H.” She has served as president of her club for the past three years and also spent one year as a 4-H Ambassador. “4-H Congress was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I would definitely encourage other 4-H members to apply and take the opportunity to attend,” she said. |
