Pirates
win two league games
The Prairie Pirates stayed unbeaten in league with a pair of league wins this past week. On Tuesday, Jan. 20 they knocked off Genesee 60-33 at Cottonwood and on Friday, Jan. 23, they won at Kamiah 62-26. Prairie jumped out to a 9-0 lead with Jake Bruner scoring 5 of those points and Lucas Arnzen the other 4. Genesee got on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer at the 3:18 mark and managed to pull within 3 at 11-8 by the end of the first quarter after another 3-pointer. Rhett Schlader opened the second quarter scoring with a 3-pointer and after a Genesee basket he got inside for a lay-up. Genesee scored again with 4:50 left to cut the lead to 16-12 but did not score the rest of the half after Prairie switched from their man-to-man to a zone defense. Another 3-ball by Schlader started Prairie’s 11-0 run to finish the half. He then fed the ball inside to Tanner Ross for a lay-up, scored 2 free throws, and picked up another assist on a lay-up by Bruner. Bruner then fed Arnzen for a lay-up to finish the first half scoring with Prairie up 27-12. Genesee was able to cut the lead down to 13 at 34-21 in the third quarter but Prairie then finished the quarter with a 16-2 run. Arnzen scored 6 of those points with Bruner scoring 5 and Calvin Hinkelman ended the quarter with a 3-pointer that put Prairie up 50-23. Prairie then scored the first 4 points of the fourth quarter on a lefthanded lay-up by Bruner and 2 free throws by Schlader that sent the game into running clock mode with 7:34 to play. Bruner wound up with 19 points to lead the scoring and added 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals. Schlader had 14 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals. Arnzen had 16 points and 7 rebounds. Ross scored 6, Hinkelman 3 and John Mager 2. Prairie had a 35-26 rebounding edge. Bryson Higgins and Mager also had 2 steals each. Offensively Prairie looked a lot like last year’s state tournament version of the Pirates as they were always looking for the player with the best shot rather than to score themselves, evidenced by 22 assists on 24 made baskets. Prairie was 24 for 54 from the field, 44%, and a perfect 8 for 8 at the free throw line. Genesee was 11 for 40 from the field, 28%, and 7 for 11 at the line, 64%. Prairie also won the JV game 57-36. The game was close in the first half with 3 lead changes and 4 tie scores. Genesee’s last lead though was 12-13 with 2:25 left in the first quarter. A putback by Luke Wemhoff put Prairie ahead and Hunter Chaffee added a basket to make it 16-13 at the quarter break. A putback by Chaffee and a free throw by Brandon Higgins put Prairie up 19-13 in the second quarter but Genesee came back with a pair of 3 pointers to tie the game at 19-19 with 4:55 left in the half. A switch from man defense to a zone shut down Genesee’s inside game and they went to bombing away from 3-point range in the second quarter. A basket by Wemhoff broke the tie and Higgins added a basket and a free throw to put Prairie up 24-19. Another Genesee 3-pointer but the lead to 2 but Prairie scored the final 5 points of the half to take a 29-22 lead. Higgins converted a 3-point play to open the second half and put Prairie up by 10. Genesee got back within 7 at 34-27 but Prairie ended the third quarter with an 8-0 run with four baskets by 4 different players and 4 different players getting credit for an assist. In order, Tyson Schlader, Brandon Anderson, Higgins and Wemhoff scored with Wemhoff, Higgins, Schlader and Anderson getting the assists. Genesee scored the first 4 points of the fourth quarter but Prairie then went on a 15-2 run to take their biggest lead at 57-33. Genesee finished off the game with a 3-pointer. Schlader and Higgins scored 13 points each to lead the JV’s in scoring with Wemhoff scoring 11, Chaffee 7, Devin Bruegeman 6, Anderson 5 and Nick Mager 2. Rebounding was even at 27 each with Schlader grabbing 7 and Anderson 6 for Prairie. Mager had 4 steals and Higgins had 5 assists. The JV hit on 25 of 46 shots from the field, 54%, and 6 of 17 from the line, 35%. Genesee was 14 for 40 from the field, 35%, and 4 for 5 at the line, 80%. Prairie jumped out to a 7-0 lead on 2 baskets by Bruner and a 3-pointer by Schlader. Kamiah was able to bounced back though and pulled within 1 point at 11-10 before Bruner scored on an inbounds play to put Prairie up 13-10 at the end of the quarter. Kamiah again pulled within 1 at 13-12 with a pair of free throws but a 3 and then a 2 by Bruner put Prairie up by 6. Kamiah was able to pull back within 3 but Bryson Higgins connected on a 3 and Bruner and Schlader each scored to make it a 24-15 lead. Schlader’s basket came after a 0 for 9 stretch similar to what he had in the Lapwai game. Prairie went on to take a 26-18 lead at the half. In the third quarter Prairie came out strong with Schlader finally heating up with a 3 and then a 2 to open the quarter. Bruner scored the next 6 points as Prairie opened the half with an 11-0 run. After a Kamiah basket Prairie outscored Kamiah 10-2 the rest of the quarter with Schlader scoring all 10 points which included a pair of 3-pointers. Prairie took a 47-22 lead into the fourth quarter. Prairie scored the first 13 points of the fourth quarter making for a 19-0 run overall as they sent the game into running clock mode. Defensively Prairie had a lot of success with their zone as Kamiah had no perimeter shooting game. They attempted only two 3-pointers in the entire game. Schlader wound up scoring 19 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, 15 of those in the third quarter alone. Bruner added 20 points while Arnzen scored 10 despite getting into early foul trouble. He sat out the entire second quarter after picking up his third on a questionable charging call late in the first quarter. Higgins scored 6 on a pair of 3-pointers and Brandon Higgins added 2 points. Despite a height advantage at every position, Prairie held just a 31-30 rebounding edge led by Schlader with 8. Of course a lot of that height advantage was negated in the second period with both Arnzen and Ross in foul trouble. Schlader, Hinkelman and Mager had 3 steals each as Prairie forced 21 turnovers, 12 in the second half, while committing just 6. Bruner and Ross had 4 assists each with Bryson Higgins adding 3. Prairie was 24 for 56 from the field, 43%, and 7 for 12 at the line, 58%. Kamiah was 10 for 28 from the field, 36%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%. Prairie is now 11-2 on the season and 8-0 in league play. The JV team also won by a score of 60-43. Kamiah took the early 2-4 lead but Prairie answered with a 14-0 run to take a 16-4 lead. Anderson scored 7 and Brandon Higgins 6 in that run with Chaffee adding the other point. Prairie led 16-6 at the quarter break. Kamiah opened the second quarter with their own scoring run as they scored 9 straight points to cut Prairie’s lead to just 1 at 16-15. Prairie bounced back through and ended the half with an 11-4 run to take a 27-19 halftime lead. Luke Wemhoff had 6 of those 11 points. The third quarter was all Prairie as they hit 10 of 18 from the field while Kamiah was just 3 for 12 as Prairie took a 49-26 lead into the fourth quarter. Wemhoff scored 6 and Anderson 5 in the quarter. Kamiah was able to get the deficit under 20 in the fourth but the final margin of 17 was as close as they would get. Wemhoff wound up with 14 points to lead the JV’s with Anderson adding 12. Chaffee and Higgins scored 8 each, Tyson Schlader 7, Justin Schumacher 4, Devin Bruegeman 3 and Anthony Karel and Ryan Glimp 2 each. The JV’s had a 42-30 advantage on the boards led by Chaffe with 9 with Anderson adding 8. Higgins and Wemhoff had 4 steals each with Schlader adding 3. Higgins had 8 assists while Schlader had 5. Prairie was 24 for 63 from the field, 38%, and 9 for 17 at the line, 53%. Kamiah was 16 for 44 from the field, 36%, and 8 for 15 at the line, 53%.
