Joyce Gehring Sonnen is artisan of the month
The Prairie Community Library extends a public invitation to visit the library and view the photo display of Joyce Joyce Gehring SonnenGehring Sonnen, Artisan of the Month.
Joyce grew up on the Breaks of the Salmon River with her parents, Bonnie and Charles Gehring, two sisters and three brothers.
After graduating from Prairie High School she attended Head Master’s School of Hair Design in Lewiston. Opening her own shop “The Blue Camas Salon“ 15 years ago, on main street Cottonwood, has resulted in a very successful business serving a clientele from across the prairie.
When asked what she enjoyed most about her business she said “color, I love to color hair” but also enjoys every aspect of the business.
Amateur Photography is a hobby of Joyce’s. An outdoor person at heart she enjoys riding horseback or 4-wheeling with her family. Also, spending time at their cabin on Cottonwood Butte or visiting relatives on the Salmon River or the Prairie all of which allows a variety of wonderful photos.
Another hobby is a large vegetable garden that produces an abundance of fruit and vegetables that are canned or frozen for winter consumption.
Joyce has been active in the community serving as a board member and volunteer with the Cottonwood Butte Ski organization. Also a 4-H leader of the Keuterville Livestock Club. She grew up as a 4-H member and has been actively involved throughout the years with her children’s 4-H endeavors. One highlight was chaperoning a group on a trip to Washington D.C.
She noted, two of her children would be making the trip this year but without her.
Joyce lives with her husband, Mel Sonnen, and their three children, Whitney a senior at Prairie, Laina, a sophomore and Paul an eighth grader near the foot of Cottonwood Butte where the view of the prairie is spectacular.
Stop by the Salon and say high to Joyce and while there ask about her “Tea Pot with an Attitude” then come to the library and enjoy her pictures.

Shown above are some of Joyce's photos that are on display at the Library this month.
