win three home games
The Prairie Pirates won 3 home games this past week to improve to 14-2 on the season. On Tuesday, Jan. 27 they beat Grangeville 57-40. On Wednesday, Jan. 28 they beat Asotin 66-33. And finally on Thursday, Jan. 29 they won a league game over Troy 56-25. They led by as many as 10 in the first quarter at 14-4 after a putback by Tanner Ross. Grangeville then mounted a comeback as they pulled within 18-14 by the end of the first quarter and scored the first 7 of the second quarter to take an 18-21 lead. Prairie answered back on a putback by Bruner, a free throw by Rhett Schlader that resulted from a blocked shot by Lucas Arnzen, and a lay-up by Arnzen to take a 23-21 lead. Grangeville tied it at 23 but a lay-up each by Arnzen and Ross put Prairie back up by 4. Prairie finished the half with a 31-27 lead as Bryson Higgins scored with 20 seconds left for the 4-point lead. In the third quarter Prairie scored just 2 points, on a short jumper by Bruner, in the first 5 minutes of the quarter as Grangeville took a 33-34 lead with 3:56 left in the period. Prairie ended the quarter on an 8-0 run with 6 of those points by Bruner and the other two by Ross to take a 41-34 lead after 3. Grangeville opened the fourth quarter with a putback but Schlader then hit back to back 3-pointers and followed that with a 2-pointer with Bruner and Ross each adding a basket as Prairie scored 12 straight to take a 53-36 lead. Grangeville broke their nearly 6 minute dry spell with a pair of free throws but Calvin Hinkelman answered that with a 3-pointer from the corner and Prairie went on to win by 17. Bruner wound up with 20 points on 9 for 15 shooting while Schlader added 13 which included three 3-pointers. Ross scored 10 on 5 for 9 shooting. Arnzen scored 8 as he hit 4 of 5 shots while Hinkelman scored 3, Higgins 2 and Justin Schumacher 1. Prairie had a 34-27 rebounding edge with Arnzen and Ross each pulling down 9 rebounds. Bruner added 7 more. Ross and Higgins had 3 steals each while Bruner had 6 assists, Schlader 5 and Higgins 3. Prairie was 24 for 48 from the field, 50%, and 5 for 11 at the line, 46%. Grangeville was 13 for 47 from the field, 28%, and 10 for 10 at the line. In the JV game Prairie pulled out a 46-40 win. Prairie trailed 8-12 at the end of the first quarter but came back to take a 20-16 lead in the second thanks to a 6 for 8 performance at the free throw line. Grangeville was able to take the lead at halftime though with a free throw and a banked in 35-footer at the halftime buzzer for a 20-21 lead. Three free throws to open the third quarter put Grangeville up 20-24 but Brandon Higgins sank a pair of free throws then tossed in a 1-hander to tie the game at 24. Hunter Chaffee and Higgins each added a free throw for a 26-24 Prairie lead. Grangeville came back to lead 26-28 but 2 free throws by Luke Wemhoff and a 3-pointer by Chaffee had Prairie up 31-30 after 3 quarters. Grangeville led only once in the fourth quarter at 33-34 but Wemhoff and Brandon Anderson each scored on putbacks to put Prairie ahead for good. Grangeville got back within 1 at 37-36 but a basket each by Chaffee and Anderson pushed the lead to 5. Grangeville twice cut the lead to 3 but each time Prairie answered. Higgins scored the game’s final 3 points at the line for the 6-point win. Higgins wound up with 13 to lead the team in scoring with Chaffee adding 12, Anderson 8, Wemhoff 7, Tyson Schlader 4 and Devin Bruegeman 2. Grangeville had a 25-34 rebounding edge. Chaffee led the Prairie JV’s with 7. Higgins, Anderson and Schlader had 4 steals each and Higgins and Schlader had 3 assists each. The JV’s were 15 for 40 from the field, 38%, and 15 for 23 at the line, 65%. Grangeville was 17 for 48 from the field, 35%, and 5 for 8 at the line, 63%. He had 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists with many of the assists resulting in baskets by Schlader who led the team with 25 points. Prairie jumped out to a 17-5 lead by the end of the first quarter and pushed the lead to 39-14 by halftime. They kept up the pressure in the third quarter by outscoring the Panthers 25-7 to take a 64-21 lead into the final period which was played under a running clock. Included in his team leading 25 points were four 3-pointers by Schlader, who was 4 for 7 from beyond the arc. Ross added 9 points, Arnzen 6, Bryson and Brandon Higgins 4 each, and Hinkelman and John Mager 2 each. Prairie not only doubled up Asotin in scoring but had twice as many made baskets, 28-14, twice as many 3-pointers made, 4-2, and twice as many free throws made, 6-3. They allowed just 3 points in the third quarter as they took a 48-19 lead into the final period. Four Pirates scored in double figures led by Bruner with 17. Ross and Arnzen each had a double-double as Ross had 11 points and 12 rebounds and Arnzen had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Schlader also hit double figures with 11 points. Bryson Higgins was the only other Pirate to score as he had 3 points on Prairie’s lone 3-point field goal of the game. Bruner almost had a double-double as he had 9 rebounds and added 7 steals. Schlader had 6 assists. With the Troy win the Pirates have clinched at least 2nd place in league with a 9-0 record. The JV team also won big by a 61-24 score.
