Pirates out in 2 games at District
For the first time since 2001 the Prairie softball team was unable to make it to the state tournament as they lost in two games at District, 7-14 to Potlatch Thursday, May 7, and 5-10 to Culdesac on Friday, May 8. The tournament was held at Orofino. This is also the first year since 1998 that neither the softball nor the baseball team made it to state. Prior to the district games they finished their regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Nezperce at Cottonwood on Tuesday May 5. Seniors Natasha Gimmeson, Kellie Heitman and Holli Uhlorn were honored prior to the games on senior night. Faith Uhlenkott tossed a no-hitter in the first game with a 15-run second inning enabling Prairie to end the game after 3 innings on the 15-run mercy rule. Prairie had 7 hits in the game led by Gimmeson who had a pair of doubles. Fellow senior Heitman had a triple while Kylie Tidwell, Hailey Danly, Sarah Seubert and Faith Uhlenkott each had a single. Hanna Ross got her first varsity pitching start in the second game and allowed just 3 hits but 7 runs due to free passes and errors. Prairie jumped all over Nezperce for 13 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Nezperce scored their first runs of the day with 2 in the second inning, Prairie led 15-2 after 3 innings and even though they led 21-3 after 4, they went ahead and let Nezperce hit in the top of the fifth. Prairie had 14 hits in the game led by Heitman and Ross who each had a pair of singles. Tidwell had a homer, Sam Remacle a triple and Danly a double. Gimmeson, Sydney Bruner, Josie Peery, Faith Uhlenkott, Leah Higgins, Sierah Poxleitner and Abbie Uhlenkott each added a single. For JV players Bruner, Peery and Poxleitner, we believe those are their first varsity hits. Prairie ends the regular season with a 17-6 record overall, 9-3 in league play. Game 1 Prairie 5 15 1—21 7 3 Nezperce 0 0 0— 0 0 2 Game 2 Nezperce 0 2 0 1 4— 7 3 3 Prairie 13 1 1 6 x—21 14 3 Potlatch came back with 4 runs in the top of the second, all unearned thanks to an error on what should have been the third out. Potlatch tied the score on that error and then the next batter hit a 3-run homer to make it 1-4. Potlatch made it 1-5 with a run in the third on a 2-out rally. In the bottom of the third Prairie took advantage of 2 Potlatch errors to score 3 runs. Kellie Heitman walked to lead off the inning and went to second on a passed ball. After an out, Potlatch didn’t waste 4 pitches this time, hitting Danly with the first pitch. Ross forced Heitman at third for the second out then Sarah Seubert’s fly ball to right was dropped with 2 runs scoring. Natasha Gimmeson then reached on an error with Seubert scoring to cut the deficit to 4-5. Over the next two innings though Potlatch scored 3 and then 6 runs for a 6-14 lead. A couple of errors hurt but mostly Potlatch was getting hits and they had a couple of speedy lefthanded hitters that killed Prairie with bunts for base hits. With a 7-run lead in the bottom of the sixth Potlatch’s coach decided he could safely pitch to Danly and she showed why he had his pitcher giver her a free pass 4 out of 5 times at the plate as she doubled to the fence on the first pitch. She scored on Gimmeson’s single up the middle but that was to be Prairie’s final run of the game. Prairie had 10 hits in the game with Faith Uhlenkott and Abbie Uhlenkott each collecting a pair of singles. Abbie also had an RBI. Danly had a double while Ross and Gimmeson each had an RBI single. Holli Uhlorn, Heitman and Kylie Tidwell each added a single. Faith Uhlenkott gave up 12 hits, 3 walks, 1 hit batsman and had 1 strikeout. 4 Prairie errors all contributed to the scoring. Potlatch 0 4 1 3 6 0 0—14 12 2 Prairie 1 0 3 1 1 1 0— 7 10 4 Prairie took a 3-0 lead into the 6th inning where they gave up 4 runs and the lead. Prairie answered back with a pair in the bottom of the 6th. Danly doubled and then amazingly scored from second on a dribbler in front of the plate by Ross. Danly was off with contact and was rounding third when Culdesac’s catcher was throwing Ross out at first. Danly easily beat the return throw to tie the game. Prairie added another run to take the lead back but couldn’t hold it in the 7th. Culdesac took the lead with a pair of runs and then got some insurance on a 3-run homer that just cleared the fence about a foot to the right of the left field foul pole. Culdesac wound up scoring 6 runs in the seventh. Prairie had 7 hits in the game. Danly had a single and a double. Seubert had a pair of singles. Ross had a double and Faith Uhlenkott and Holli Uhlorn each had a single. Prairie finishes their season at 17-8. Culdesac 0 0 0 0 0 4 6—10 10 3 Prairie 0 0 3 0 0 2 0— 5 7 4
