Summit
students visit Monastery
The 3-4 grades of Summit Academy visited St. Gertrude’s Monastery in Cottonwood, Idaho. Learning more about the central Idaho region, students journeyed to the land of yesterday. With Miss Haeling at the helm, students gained historical perspective. The early migration of the Chinese during the building of the railroads intrigued the students. Information was gathered on how to make wooden bullets, as well as the regal meaning of wearing royal crowns. Other students gazed into the eyes of a two-headed pig! Heading to St. Gertrude’s Chapel, the students were captivated by its beauty. The entire chapel is a living book of Christian history and art. The ceiling includes symbols from the Apostle’s Creed. Relics in the altar and tabernacle connected the students with the life of Christians in heaven. Students saw how the moveable pictures at the front of the chapel coincide with the various times of the Church year. St. Gertrude’s Monastery and Museum are great gifts of the Cottonwood area. With 60,000 artifacts on display, the students received a small taste of the treasures waiting to be explored. Remembering our forefathers helps us better understand ourselves so that we can make better decisions for our future.
