Pirates win big over Genesee
The Prairie football team picked up where they left off last year as they throttled a rebuilding Genesee team 48-8 at Cottonwood Friday, Sept. 4, in their season and league opener.Calvin Hinkelman, 23, blocks a defender to clear the way for Luke Wemhoff, with ball, to break through for what turned out to be a 48 yard touchdown run.
Genesee tried to onside the opening kickoff but Prairie recovered at the Genesee 49.
On the Pirates’ first play from scrimmage the whole left side opened up for quarterback Jake Bruner who took off around the left side and went 49 yards for the game’s first touchdown, just 12 seconds into the contest. Luke Wemhoff ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0.
Genesee was forced to punt with Prairie taking over at their own 23.
Bruner was sacked a couple of times before getting off a swing pass to the right to Calvin Hinkelman who took it 28 yards to the Genesee 48.
On the next play Wemhoff took a pitch around the right side and went all the way for Prairie’s second touchdown. The 2-point try failed leaving Prairie with a 14-0 lead.
Prairie’s third touchdown came by way of their defense. Genesee went for it on fourth and 5 from their own 38 and Bruner intercepted Kyle Moser’s pass at the Genesee 44 and took it all the way back for a touchdown. Again the 2-point try failed as Prairie led 20-0 with 5:31 still left in the first quarter.
Genesee finally put a drive together and had a third and 1 at the Prairie 19. Two false start penalties set them back and Bruner wound up batting away a fourth down pass attempt on the first play of the second quarter as Prairie took over at the 35.
Hinkelman gained the bulk of the yardage on the drive picking up 11 yards on the first play. He then gained 10 and 29 yards on consecutive pass play to move the ball to the Genesee 15.
After a loss, Bruner picked up 13 yards to the 6 with a facemask penalty setting up first and goal at the 3. Hinkelman went in on the next play for the touchdown. Again the 2-point try failed leaving Prairie with a 26-0 lead.
The Pirates forced another punt and took over at their own 40.
20 yards of defensive penalties helped Prairie move the ball down the field with Wemhoff scoring the touchdown from the 2 yard line. Wemhoff added the 2 pointer to make it 34-0 with 4:37 left in the half.
Genesee picked up a first down on their next possession but then Jayce Huling took over on defense for Prairie making tackles for losses on 3 consecutive plays. He had 2 sacks for 13 yards in losses plus tackled a running back in the backfield for 3 more yards to force a Genesee punt.
Prairie took over at the 50 and went to a hurry-up offense. Bruner connected with Wemhoff on passes of 16 and 24 yards to put Prairie just outside the 10 yard line. Bruner then missed his first pass after opening the game with 8 straight completions. On the next play he handed off to Wemhoff on a counter and Wemhoff scored. The 2-point try again came up short and Prairie took a 40-0 lead into the half.
Genesee had the ball first in the second half but Hinkelman sacked quarterback Jeffery Waisanen for a 5 yard loss on a fourth down pass attempt to give Prairie the ball at the Genesee 35.
IJake Bruner was running free on his way to a 49 yard touchdown on Prairie’s first play from scrimmage.t took just 5 plays before Wemhoff scored his fourth touchdown of the game from the 3 yard line. Wemhoff added the 2-pointer to put Prairie up 48-0. That sent the game into running clock mode the rest of the way.
Genesee ate up most of the rest of the third quarter with a drive down to the Prairie 16 but an attempted pitch from Waisenan to Edward Becker misfired and Hinkelman wound up recovering the ball at the Prairie 26.
For the first time in the game the Prairie offense failed to score when they had the ball. A big gain on a deep pass to Hinkelman was wiped out by a holding penalty 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage. That led to Prairie’s only punt of the game.
Bruner’s punt went off the side of his foot and only went 10 yards beyond the line of scrimmage setting Genesee up on the Prairie 38.
With Prairie putting in subs on defense Genesee was able to finally punch the ball into the end zone with just 2:45 left on the clock. They added the 2-pointer to make it 48-8.
Prairie was then able to run out the clock on their ensuing drive as they subbed in liberally.
Prairie wound up gaining 317 yards on offense, 152 on the ground and 164 through the air.
Wemhoff had 11 carries for 70 yards while Bruner had 6 carries for 62 yards. Hinkelman added 24 yards on 3 carries.
Bruner was 10 for 13 passing for 164 yards. Hinkelman caught 4 for 72 with Wemhoff catching 3 for 58, Devin Bruegeman 2 for 19 and Brandon Anderson 1 for 15.
The defense held Genesee to just 63 total yards, 46 running the ball and 17 passing. Moser led the rushing attack with 39 yards on 12 carries. He was also 1 for 2 passing with an interception for 3 yards. Waisanen was 4 for 8 for 14 yards.
Hinkelman led the team in tackles with 9.5 and a fumble recovery and a sack with Huling adding 8.5 with 3 sacks. Anderson had 6.5 with Wemhoff adding 4.5, Bruegeman 3.5, Spencer Schumacher 3 with a sack, Bruner 3 with an interception and Caleb McWilliams 3. Daniel Mager, Philip Spencer, Hunter Hasselstrom, Hunter Chaffee and Brandon Higgins each had 1 tackle and Justin Schumacher had half a tackle.
