Lady Pirates sweep Kamiah
The Prairie Lady Pirates won their league opener as they swept Kamiah 25-7, 25-17, 25-9 at Kamiah Tuesday, Sept. 1.Shayla VonBargen goes lefty to tip the ball past Kamiah’s blockers. Also shown is Hailey Danly, who made the set.
Shayla VonBargen scored a kill to give Prairie a lead they never relinquished.
Sarah Seubert put Prairie in control of the opening game with a 9 point service run that included 7 aces. Krystin Uhlenkott picked up 2 kills on the only 2 times Kamiah was able to return serve.
After a sideout, Uhlenkott scored another kill to put VonBargen on the service line. After 3 jump serve aces, she went to a standard serve and Uhlenkott added 2 more kills as Prairie took an 18-2 lead.
The intensity backed off at that point but Prairie still outscored Kamiah 7-5 the rest of the way to win by 18.
In the second game the two bench players picked up a lot of playing time. One of them, Sydney Bruner helped Prairie take a 7-1 lead with a 5-point service run. She had an ace while VonBargen had 2 kills plus a stuff block.
VonBargen and Uhlenkott each had 3-point service runs with all three points as aces as Prairie took a 17-6 lead.
Kamiah then played their best stretch of the night as they cut the lead down to 23-16 but still lost by 8 at 25-17.
In the third game Kamiah managed their only leads of the night at 0-1 and 2-3 and still had the game close at 8-7. At that point Chaye Uptmor scored a kill that sent Uhlenkott to the service line. It was 22-7 before Uhlenkott missed a serve and the match was all but over. Uhlenkott had 9 aces while Uptmor added 2 kills and Seubert and Hailey Danly each added a kill.
Eventually VonBargen scored the match winning kill as Prairie finished off the Kubs 25-9.
For the match we had Uhlenkott with 9 kills and 12 aces. VonBargen had 8 kills including a stuff, 2 assists and 7 aces. Uptmor had 7 kills including a stuff. Danly had 4 kills, 16 assists and 3 aces. Seubert had 3 kills, 1 assists and 8 aces. Leah Higgins had 3 kills and 7 assists. Angela Wemhoff had 3 assists and an ace. Finally Bruner had 1 assist and 2 aces.
Prairie is now 1-0 in league and overall.
The JV team also won all 3 of their games although it was a little tougher than the varsity match at 25-17, 25-19, 15-13.
In the first game Prairie jumped out to a 4-1 lead only to see Kamiah come back to take a 5-7 lead.
Prairie came back to retake the lead but the lead changed hands several times until Madison Pecarovich  served 4 straight aces to put Prairie up 21-15.
Kamiah came back with a couple of points but Darlene Gehring then served 3 straight aces to close out the set.
In the second game Kristyna Krogh served Prairie to an 8-0 lead with 5 aces plus a couple of kills by Britny Bianchi and a game opening kill by Anna Vinsova.
After a trade of missed serves Bianchi made it 13-1 with 4 more aces.
Kamiah was able to get as close as 5 points at 23-18 but a kill by Krogh put the JV’s at game point. Anticlimactically, a pair of missed serves scored the final 2 points of the game as Prairie won 25-19.
Game 3 did not start well as Prairie fell behind 0-5.
Pecarovich served 3 aces to get Prairie back into it at 4-5. Gehring then served 4 straight aces to give Prairie their first lead at 9-7.
Kamiah tied it at 11-11 but never again held the lead.
Vinsova wound up scoring the match-ending kill.
