Pirates beat Savages 58-24
The Prairie football team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 58-24 win over Salmon River Friday, Sept. 11 at Cottonwood.Calvin Hinkelman catches a pass against Salmon River.
Quarterback Jake Bruner had another outstanding game as he ran for 3 touchdowns and threw for 3 more which included one where he was the one that wound up crossing the goal line after taking a lateral.
Like Genesee the previous week, Salmon River tried an onside kick on the opening kickoff. It didn’t go the required 10 yards for them to be able to recover and Prairie took over on the Salmon River 43. Bruner connected with Devin Bruegeman over the middle for 11 yards and then looked to pass again. With no one open and the defenders coming after him, he took off and wound up going 32 yards for the touchdown. Luke Wemhoff ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0 just 34 seconds into the game.
The Savages responded with a grind it out drive that last 11 plays but came up short at the Prairie 30 when Bruegeman tackled the Salmon River receiver a yard short of a first down on a fourth and 5 play.
Prairie took over and went into a no-huddle offense and moved quickly down the field with 4 running plays and 6 passing plays. The first pass reception was made by Isaiah Shears, in his first action since injuring his knee in the Oakley game in last year’s state playoffs. He was back in action a couple weeks earlier than expected and was limited to 8 plays, all on offense.
Bruner capped off the drive with his second touchdown on a designed running play that went for 11 yards. The 2-point try failed as Prairie took a 14-0 lead.
Salmon River’s Rylie Travis initially muffed the ensuing kickoff and had to go back to the 23 to pick it up. From there things opened up for him and he wound up going 77 yards for a touchdown. Prairie stopped the 2-point try but Salmon River had cut the lead to 14-6.
Prairie took over at their own 35 following the kickoff and put together another long drive. This one took 10 plays and featured 6 runs and 4 passes. Calvin Hinkelman capped it off with a 4 yard burst up the middle. Bruner ran in the 2-pointer to make it 22-6 just prior to the end of the first quarter.
Salmon River’s next possession didn’t last long as Bruegeman intercepted a pass at the 50 yard line.
Hinkelman went over the right side for 30 yards on the next play. 4 straight passes set up Prairie with a second and goal at the 1. Bruner scored his third running touchdown on a sneak and then passed to Brandon Higgins for the 2-pointer to make it 30-6.
Half of Prairie’s 8 defenders converged on the Salmon River ballcarrier on this play, stopping him for little to no gain.It appeared that Salmon River had scored another touchdown on a kickoff return but a penalty for an illegal block at the Prairie 30 took the points off the board.
A 26 yard gain on a pass followed by a 12 yard run set the Savages up with first and goal at the Prairie 4 yard line.
A fumbled snap led to a 3 yard loss. A pass play netted 0 yards. Jayce Huling and Higgins combined to sack quarterback Tucker Boyd for a 5 yard loss and Salmon River was looking at fourth and goal from the 12. Brandon Anderson batted away the fourth down pass in the end zone to give Prairie the ball at the 12.
A couple of short pass plays moved the ball out to the 28.
On the next play Wemhoff somehow shook the coverage and was wide open way downfield. Bruner connected with him on about the Salmon River 25 and Wemhoff was able to just get to the end zone as the defender caught him from behind. The 2 point try was stopped and Prairie led 36-6 with 5:08 left in the half.
Salmon River again got into Pirate territory with the help of a questionable pass interference penalty but the defense stiffened and Prairie took over on downs at their own 22.
After a first down run, Prairie went to the pass with Bruner connecting with Hinkelman for 41 yards down the right sideline that put the ball at the 15.
A slant to Higgins set up first and goal at the 2. After an incomplete pass, Hinkelman went up the middle for his second touchdown. Bruner passed to Higgins for the 2 pointer to make it 44-6 with 55 seconds left in the half.
Salmon River got across midfield on their final possession but the half ended with 3 straight turnovers. Spencer Schumacher recovered a fumble at the Prairie 49. Bruner then got picked off on a deep pass by Travis who returned the ball to the Salmon River45. On the next play Travis tried to pass but Thomas Schwartz intercepted. The half ended on Schwartz’ interception.
Salmon River got the ball to start the second half and a busted play wound up gaining 34 yards to the Prairie 23. That scoring threat ended 2 plays later though as Higgins intercepted at the 5 yard line and returned the ball back to the 35.
A holding penalty had Prairie facing a fourth down and 21 from their own 42 and Prairie went to the trick play. Bruner rolled out hard to the right and tossed a short pass to Anderson. Bruner kept right on going and took a pitch back from Anderson and went all the way for the touchdown. Bruner got credit for both throwing a touchdown pass and scoring it on the same play.
The 2-point try was stopped short but Prairie led 50-6.Devin Bruegeman juggles the ball before coming down with the catch on this play.
Salmon River came back and Travis broke loose for a 47 yard run on a sweep to the right for the Savages’ first offensive touchdown of the game. The 2-point try failed as Salmon River cut the lead to 50-12.
Prairie answered right back though as Bruner completed passes of 23 yards to Bruegeman and 19 to Anderson to move the ball to the 23.
After a couple of incomplete passes, Hinkelman gained 15 on a pitch to the right to set up first and goal at the 8. Bruner then connected with Bruegeman for the touchdown. Bruner then passed to Hinkelman for the 2-pointer to make it 58-12 and send the game to running clock mode.
Prairie started subbing liberally on defense and Salmon River was able to score a couple more touchdowns. They had a 5-play, 58 yard drive for a score and then got the ball right back as the ensuing kickoff was fumbled away by the Pirates. They took over at their own 37 and needed just 5 plays again to score.
Prairie stopped the 2-point try both times.
Prairie sent the subs in on offense and they were able to pick up a couple of first downs to run significant time off the clock.
The drive stalled at the 38 though and Salmon River took over on downs.
The Savages picked up 21 yards on a passed but the next pass was dropped and time ran out.
Prairie piled up 546 yards on offense with 188 rushing on 25 attempts and 358 passing.
Bruner gained 75 yards on 6 carries and Hinkelman gained 74 on 8 carries.
