Pirates win Homecoming game
The Prairie football team picked up their third easy win as they knocked off Council 64-24 to win their Homecoming game Friday, Sept. 18 at Cottonwood.
Prairie received the opening kickoff and going mostly to the short passing game, moved the ball down to the Council 22 yard line where the drive stalled and Council took over on downs.Isaiah Shears, showing he’s back from injury, lays out to make a spectacular catch despite great pass coverage. He came down on the 1 yard line and 2 plays later scored the touchdown.
Council was held to just 1 yard in 3 plays and punted. Brandon Anderson returned the punt 18 yards to the Council 40.
Jake Bruner ran a quarterback draw up the middle for 34 yards to set up first and goal at the 6. Two plays later Lucas Wemhoff scored from the 5 as he took a pitch around right end. Bruner ran in the 2 pointer to make it 8-0.
Council was again forced to punt with Brandon Higgins returning the punt 12 yards from the 50 to the Council 38.
Prairie needed just 4 plays to score with Wemhoff scoring on an 8 yard pass from Bruner. Isaiah Shears, back to playing the full game, had set up the score with a pair of catches worth 18 and 14 yards. Bruner passed to Shears for the 2-pointer to make it 16-0.
Council again had to punt and Anderson returned the punt 19 yards to the Prairie 29. 2 plays later Bruner connected with Calvin Hinkelman for a 21 yard touchdown on a short pass out to the left that Hinkelman took the distance. Bruner ran in the 2 pointer to make it 24-0.
Council got on the board on their next possession when a short pass to JT Mahon, a state sprint medallist in track, went 65 yards for a touchdown. Prairie stopped the 2-point try which made it 24-6.
The Pirates answered right back with a 7-play 55 yard scoring drive. The drive didn’t start well as a holding penalty wiped out a big gain by Hinkelman and set Prairie back to their own 34. Bruner came back and connected with Hinkelman deep down the left side for a 32 yard gain and a first down. On the next play he connected again with Hinkelman over the middle for 31 yards to set up a first and goal at the 3. Bruner went in for the score on the next play and Hinkelman added the 2-pointer to make it 32-6.
Council turned the ball over on downs on their next possession as Jayce Huling tackled Brett Rosengrant for a 2 yard loss on a fourth and 6 play.
Prairie took over at the Council 26 and had to overcome another holding penalty to score again.
2 passes to Shears netted 25 yards to gain the first down at the 13. On third and 4, Bruner took off around right end and reached to clip the pylon with the ball but was called out of bounds inside the 1 yard line. Hinkelman went in for the score on the next play. For the first time Prairie was stopped on the 2-point try but still led 38-6 with 3:51 left in the half.
Jake Bruner was somehow called out of bounds inside the one on this play although he hit the pylon with the ball.Council appeared ready to score again on their next possession as a facemask penalty helped set them up with a first and goal at the Prairie 7.
Daniel Mager stopped Rosengrant for a 3 yard loss on first down. Anderson sacked him for a 16 yard loss on second down. Bruner deflected the third down pass attempt and on fourth down Shears tackled Herry Ludwig for a 14 yard loss to give Prairie the ball at the 40.
On the next play the Council defense bit on a fake to Shears in the short flat while Wemhoff leaked downfield and was wide open at the Council 30. He caught Bruner’s pass and took it all the way for a 60 yard score. The 2-point try came up short but Prairie had capped off a 36 point second quarter and took a 44-6 lead into the half.
Council received the second half kickoff but turned the ball over on downs when Bruner tackled Rosengrant for a 23 yard loss on fourth and 6 that set Prairie up at the Council 36.
Prairie almost scored on the next play as Shears layed out for a spectacular catch deep down the right side but came down on the 1 yard line. After an incompletion, Shears got the touchdown on a slant pass. The 2-pointer was again stopped and Prairie led 50-6.
Council appeared to get their second touchdown on their next possession as Mahon went 64 yards but the play was called back on an illegal block. Prairie wound up taking over on downs at the Council 39.
3 plays later Hinkelman ran a sweep around right end and went 27 yards for a touchdown. The 2-point try was stopped but Prairie had taken a 56-6 lead that sent the game into running clock mode.
It didn’t take Council long to answer as Rosengrant returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for the touchdown. Prairie coaches thought the officials had missed an illegal block during the return. The 2-point pass fell incomplete to make it 56-12.
Council tried an onside kick but Tyson Schlader called for a fair catch at the Prairie 47. 2 plays later Bruner ran a keeper around right end all the way for a 53-yard touchdown. Wemhoff ran in the 2-pointer to make it 64-12.

They scored on a 53 yard pass play and tried another onside kick. Schlader again recovered but Bruner threw an interception on the next play.
