Pirates win 3 matches
The Prairie Lady Pirates made it 10 match wins in a row with a wins at Troy and Grangeville and a home match win over Lapwai this past week. The first game saw Prairie fall behind 0-4 but they fought back to tie the game at 6-6 and then took the lead behind a 5-point service run from Shayla VonBargen who had 4 aces. After leading 12-7, it was Troy’s turn to come from behind and they finally tied it at 17-17 then scored the final 8 points with Emma Schetzle serving. In game 2 Prairie again fell behind 0-4 and after a kill by Krystin Uhlenkott, gave up 6 more points to fall behind 1-10. Another kill by Uhlenkott ended that slide and Prairie dominated the rest of the game. VonBargen again served 5 straight points, with an ace plus 3 kills by Uhlenkott, to get Prairie back in the game at 7-10. Troy scored a sideout on a kill by 5’11” Abbie Blum, but Uhlenkott answered and Angela Wemhoff then served Prairie into the lead. During Wemhoff’s 5 points service run Chaye Uptmor scored twice on blocks and added another on a kill to the corner. Uhlenkott added a pair of kills for a 13-11 lead. After a trade of sideouts, Uhlenkott served 3 straight aces to make it 17-12. Troy answered with a back-row kill by Blum but Uptmor scored a right side kill that put herself on the service line. Uptmor then served out the game. She had an ace while VonBargen had a pair of kills plus a stuff block. Sarah Seubert added a kill, Hailey Danly stuffed a Troy spike and Uhlenkott added a back row kill. After falling behind 1-10, Prairie had outscored Troy 24-3. The third game again saw Prairie fall behind early, 0-6 and 3-12 before climbing back into the game. Prairie chipped away until finally tying the score at 21-21. The teams traded points until Prairie took their first lead of the game at 24-23 on a stuff by VonBargen after a sideout kill by Danly. Troy fought off that game point but Prairie had another after a kill by Uhlenkott. A kill by Blum tied it but Prairie 3 more times took the lead on sideout kills by Uhlenkott and each time Troy came back to tie. Finally an under the net violation gave Troy a game point opportunity and they cashed it in. Prairie had 5 game opportunities to just 1 for Troy and lost the game. Game 4 followed the pattern of the first 3 games as Prairie again fell behind early, this time 1-9. Prairie again chipped away at the lead until pulling within 1 at 16-17 after a 5-point service run by VonBargen. Uptmor had 2 kills while Uhlenkott and Mykaela McWilliams added one each and VonBargen got the fifth point when her dig of Troy kill found open space on the Troy side. Prairie still trailed at 20-22 when Seubert scored a kill to send Uptmor to the service line. Danly and VonBargen each had a kill and Uptmor served an ace to get to 24-22. A missed spike gave Troy the serve but VonBargen answered with the game-winning kill to tie the match at 2 games each. In a short game to 15 Prairie couldn’t afford to fall too far behind but still let Troy score the first 3 points. Prairie came back to tie it at 3-3 and then fell behind again. They took their first lead of the game on a 3-point service run by VonBargen that featured an ace sandwiched between two stuff blocks by McWilliams. Troy answered by taking back the lead at 8-9 before a kill by Uhlenkott tied it again. Uptmor and Uhlenkott each scored a kill for an 11-9 lead. Troy got the sideout but Uhlenkott answered with a kill. A stuff block by Danly and a kill by Uptmor, with Uhlenkott serving, set up match point. Danly then set Uhlenkott for a back row kill that scored the match winner. Your reporter had Uhlenkott with 32 kills, 1 assist and 4 aces in the match. (We count it as a kill anytime the ball is hit over the net and doesn’t come back in play.) VonBargen had 26 kills, including 5 stuffs and had 8 aces. Uptmor had 13 kills, including 3 stuffs plus 1 assist and 3 aces. Danly had 6 kills including 2 stuffs, plus 56 assists and 3 aces. Seubert had 5 kills and 2 assists. McWilliams had 4 kills including 2 stuffs and 3 assists. Wemhoff had 3 assists and an ace. In the JV match Prairie lost all 3 games, 18-25, 20-25, 8-15. The first game saw them take an lead at 6-5 and 7-6 before falling behind the rest of the way. A 5-point run by Troy put them up for good although Prairie got back within 2 at 14-16, 15-17 and 18-20. Troy scored the final 5 points of the game for the win. The second game saw Prairie fall behind early only to come back to tie the game at 13, 14, 18 and 19 but they could never get that point to put them ahead. In the final game they held the lead early on at 3-1, 6-5 and 8-7 but Troy got a hot server at the end who served the final 8 points of the match. The C team also lost, no scores available. Coach Cheyenne Hudson changed things up some in the second game and the team struggled a bit as they trailed by as many as 6 points although they were able to pull out a tight win. She used the same rotation in the third game and the team won more easily. VonBargen had 9 kills and 11 digs in the match while Danly added 17 assists and Uhlenkott had 15 digs. Grangeville won the JV match 2 games to 1. There was also a C match but no results are available. The first game was close early on with Prairie leading for the most part until Lapwai put together a 4-point run to turn an 11-10 deficit into an 11-14 lead. At that point prairie called timeout and came out with a tip by VonBargen to score the sideout. Uptmor then served up 2 aces and VonBargen stuffed a Lapwai spike for a 15-14 lead. Lapwai never led again although they managed to tie it at 17. Consecutive kills by Uptmor put Prairie back on top for good although Lapwai twice got within 1 at 19-18 and 21-20. A kill by VonBargen put Prairie up 22-20 and Danly served an ace that hit the back line. A net foul against Prairie was followed by a bricked serve by Lapwai that gave Prairie a game-point opportunity. Uptmor served an ace to finish the game. Prairie never trailed in the second game but they could never build much of a lead either. They led by as many as 5 several times but Lapwai would always battle back. Once they cut a 13-8 lead down to 1 at 13-12. Uptmor again came through with back to back kills and Uhlenkott added 2 more to push the lead right back to 5. After trading sideouts, Uhlenkott scored 2 more kills to give Prairie a 20-13 lead. Lapwai battled back within 4 at 23-19 and later got the lead down to 3 at 24-21 before McWilliams scored a right side kill to give Prairie a 2 games to non lead. In the third game the score was tied at 3-3 when Uhlenkott scored a kill that put Seubert on the service line. Another kill by Uhlenkott, 3 aces by Seubert, a tip by Uhlenkott, first touch kills at the net by Danly and McWilliams and 2 more aces by Seubert and Prairie had a 13-3 lead, their biggest lead of the night. After 4 straight sideouts, Lapwai put a small run together to get back within 6 but that was as close as they would get. Once they got the margin down to 18-12, Leah Higgins scored a kill and Uptmor served up 2 aces to push the lead back to 9. Twice more Lapwai got within 6, the last time at 22-16. At that point McWilliams scored another right side kill, Seubert followed with an ace and McWilliams ended the match with a stuff block. Uhlenkott led the team with 13 kills plus an assist. McWilliams had 9 kills including two blocks. VonBargen had 8 kills including a block plus 2 assists and 2 aces. Uptmor had 7 kills, 1 assists and 6 aces. Danly had 6 kills, 28 assists and 3 aces. Seubert had 2 kills, 4 assists and 6 aces. Higgins had 1 kill. Wemhoff had 1 assists and 1 ace. Finally Sydney Bruner had an ace. Prairie is now 15-3 on the season, 5-0 in league play. Prairie won the JV match, coming from behind in all three games, 25-23, 25-16, 17-15. In the opening game the didn’t take their first lead until Kristyna Krogh put together a 4-point service run that included 3 aces that put them up 9-8. They then were outscored 1-11 to fall behind 10-19. They were down 12-20 when Lapwai bricked a serve, sending Madison Pecarovich to the service line. She got Prairie back in the game with a 7-point run that included 5 aces with Josie Peery adding 2 kills. That tied the game at 20-20. A trade of sideouts led to Anna Vinsova scoring consecutive aces to put Prairie up 23-22. After a Lapwai sideout, Peery won a joust at the net and then scored the game-winning kill. In the second game Prairie fell behind 1-5 and didn’t take their first lead until a 3-point service run by Jordyn Higgins put them up 13-10. From there Prairie allowed Lapwai just 2 points on serve and gradually pulled away for the 9-point win. In the third game Prairie fell behind 2-9 and still trailed 7-13 when Lapwai bricked a serve. Krogh took over and served Prairie into the lead with 6 straight aces to get it to 14-13. Prairie missed out on that game-point chance, as well as one at 15-14 but Theresa Wemhoff set up a third chance with a free ball kill and Trista Latimer served up an ace to end it.
