Summit
wins 2 of 3 matches
The Summit volleyball team played 3 matches this past week, winning 2 of them. Summit decisively lost the first set but came back to win the second and third set in close games. In the fourth set they had a chance to knock off the Knights but lost a very close game. In the final game they took a 7-1 lead but Logos came roaring back to tie the game at 8-8 and then eventually eked out the win as the two teams fought back and forth. Rachel Waters had a big game setting the ball and freshman Taylor Lustig adapted well to a move to middle blocker as the Patriots picked up an easy win. Summit also won both JV games, 25-21 and 25-10. In the opening game C.V. scored the first 2 points then Taylor Lustig served the Patriots to a 6-2 lead with 3 aces plus a kill each by Ally Sonnen and Rachel Waters. Summit never trailed the rest of the game although they also never led by more than the final 8 point margin. C.V. was within 4 at 21-17 when Lustig scored a kill to send Bridget Beckman to the service line. Lucy Osborne scored a kill and then Beckman served up 2 aces to finish off the game. Summit scored the first 2 points of the second game then saw C.V. take the momentum. C.V. took their first lead at 5-6 and built a 6-13 lead. Summit eventually got back within 2 at 18-19 after 3 straight aces by Sonnen but at that point C.V. called a timeout, got the sideout and then held on to win the game. C.V. bricked the opening serve of the third game and an ace by Lustig and a kill by Sonnen put Summit up 3-0. Summit took control of the game with a 7 point service run by Waters. She had 3 aces while Sonnen dominated at the net with 4 kills including a block. C.V. was able to get back within 3 at 12-9 but Summit scored the sideout and Lustig had 3 straight aces that all but put the game away as they led 23-14 at that point. Waters scored the game winning kill on a second touch kill. The fourth game saw Summit take a 4-1 lead on 3 kills by Sonnen and an ace by Waters but C.V. came back to take the lead. C.V. held the lead except for a couple of ties at 8 and again at 12 until Lustig scored a back row kill that put Summit up 15-14. Waters served 2 aces after that for a 17-14 lead and Summit never trailed again. Summit led 19-16 when Waters scored another second touch kill to send Beckman to the service line and like the first game, Beckman was able to serve it out. Waters had 3 kills and Sonnen 2 in Beckman’s match ending 5 point service run. For the match Sonnen had 26 kills including 3 blocks plus 3 assists and 5 aces. Waters had 13 kills with 28 assists and 7 aces. Lustig had 6 kills, 5 assists and 11 aces.
